The car/train scene in Kill the Alligator and Run...ugh.
I wonder what 4th grader they stole that idea from.

I didn't laugh with Lisa firstly, but reviewing some of her episodes showed me that she has actually a great potential as a humorous character and hilarious jokes as any other. Anyway, the main reason why I like her is that she is the best-depicted character of the whole series. That gives realism to The Simpsons in general and particularly to her episodes, even though Homer and Bart are better at humour.

Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Taking it out of its context (and context determines everything), it might be kinda funny maybe, but the last line is lame in either context.

I think it's difficult to pinpoint a low point in the show now. Seasons 10-12 derailed the show forever, and started the era of awfulness/mediocrity that has never ended, but in some strange way, I feel like there was some effort on the part of the writers in those seasons to make the show fun to watch at least. Seasons 10-12 weren't really true to the The Simpsons. Instead they reformulated the show slightly. The end result wasn't great (in fact, it was terrible), but there was definitely effort put into them.
Seasons 17-19 however just seem like the writers have given up at times (though I've enjoyed quite a few from these seasons, and I still watch). As others have said, it's like the cast was replaced by emotionless zombies, going through the numbers. I still prefer the last few seasons to 10-12 though. 10-12 started this mess, and I feel that had the show been written better then, the tremendous decline in quality wouldn't have happened for years.
I've got to say, I find that scene kind of funny too. No, I wouldn't expect to hear something like that in Seasons 2-5, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't think this a very good example of when the heart of the show was taken out because Moe is a callous, creepy character, and always has been.
Fair point, I'm probably exaggerating slightly. However from my perspective there hadn't been a moment in the series up until that point where a character stepped out of line in terms of what's in good taste (other than Homer not giving Grampa his kidney in Homer Simpson in: "Kidney Trouble" - which I DO think is funny and although rather cruel NOT in bad taste). The thing that attracted me to the show when I was younger were the characters and that it could appeal to me as I got older, yet it was a smart and decent show. You could go on and on about characterization but for such sensitive subject matter to be dealt with in such a bad fashion, a gag like this one reeks of bad taste to me - however it's mostly just the last line or so.
Homer's Enemy is a good dark episode. Some of the humour in Alone Again Natura-Diddily is alright but although a moment like this is realistic, it's done without any wit and when you think about it is kind of sick - I don't really work on that wavelength. A good analogy would be if you're familiar with a Charlie Chaplin films in that they could make you laugh and make you cry, yet the contrast wasn't always so big. The Simpsons had a similar yet milder sort of feel in the classic years yet stuff like this appeared and made it rather one-dimensional, but I see where you're coming from.Originally Posted by Green_Peaness
