    Classic Homer Tourney Round 33A: "Temptation" vs "Badman"

    "Temptation" should make it to the final...funny, endearing, engaging, and one of the few occasions where the episode is driven by Homer's internal struggle. On the other hand, "Badman" tries really hard to be cleverly satirical but fails at every turn and the result is one of the most pretentious episodes of the series.

    I dunno when "Homer Badman" was slipped from A+ episode to A episode or little lower in the general NHC... but it still is an A+ episode in my book. But I think "The Last Temptation of Homer" is better A+ episode, so there

    Last Temptation of Homer is well plotted, hilarious, creative and a fantastic all around episode. Homer: Badman is very funny and a great satire but the ending falls flat. Lat Temptation of Homer has my vote.

    This is simply unfair. It's like my #3 favorite episode against my #5 favorite episode. Homer: Badman by a gummi Venus.

    PS: I've never heard a Simpsons episode be accused of pretension before.

    "The Last Temptation of Homer" probably won't make it to the final but it has enough to get my vote over the over-rated "Homer Badman"

    I would classify "pretension" as giving off an air of superiority towards the audience, which I've never experienced while watching the show. The Simpsons is rarely ever obscure with its references (and certainly not consciously so; they could go over the audience's collective head, but they never choose to) and always strives to get the audience involved. This isn't David Lynch we're talking about here. Badman in particular is extremely broad, and picks apart something anyone with a television set should be familiar with: media vultures. Again, I couldn't even give you an example of an episode that strives to be too clever for its fanbase, as I've always felt the show itself is fairly blue collar.

    Yeah, I figured we were talking about something a little bit different there.

    By your definition, I would say that most of the recent episodes are incredibly pretentious. I can't count the amount of jokes from season 19-20 are practically begging you to laugh but fall flat on their face.

    Both are really good and really funny, but I have to vote for "Temptation" which is one of the best S5 episodes.

    "Temptation" is really good, gets better with every viewing
