    Season 1 Review:

    The Simpsons Christmas Special: 10
    Bart the Genius: 8
    Homer's Odyssey: 7
There's No Disgrace Like Home: 10
    Bart the General: 10
    Moaning Lisa: 6
The Call Of The Simpsons: 9
    The Telltale Head: 10
Life On The Fast Lane: 5
    Homer's Night Out: 7
    The Crepes Of Wrath: 8
    Krusty Gets Busted: 10
    Some Enchanted Evening: 7

    Season average: 8

Overall, an outstanding start to my favorite show of all time. We're introduced to several memorable characters, and see interesting and varied adventures, from the elementary school to the woods to the bowling alley and all the way to Europe. As you can see, I ranked 5 stories with perfect 10's, but if I had to pick just one favorite, it would be Bart the General. The most laughs per minute and a great story that's easy for almost any kid to relate to. Life On The Fast Lane is my least favorite of the season, but still has many good things about it. It would be another six seasons before the first truly bad episode would come along. There are a couple from Season 2 that are less than stellar, but more on that when I get to those.

More detailed comments on each of those episodes can be found here:

"Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" - A-

    "Moaning Lisa" - A+
"The Call of the Simpsons" - C-
    "The Telltale Head" - A
"Life on the Fast Lane" - A
    "Homer's Night Out" - C+
"The Crepes of Wrath" - A-
    "Krusty Gets Busted" - B-
    "Some Enchanted Evening" - A

The season as a whole is pretty inconsistent, with episodes ranging from a 'D' to an 'A+', but there are more good episodes than bad, allowing it to scrape by as a classic season. It's nothing special, given that it is the worst of the classics, but it's still far better than any of the post classic seasons.

Yeah they're actually terrible episodes especially in comparison to the rest of the first season/classic era.

Not everything has to be compared to the classic era you cunt. If I thought they were the best of that era they would get an A+ but an A- is fair. Very enjoyable and funny episodes.

Wait so how do you grade episodes? In comparison to the series as a whole? Season by season? or just some stupid random scale. I mean I guess I can't really debate the merits of either episode in question(Night out/No Disgrace) as you haven't really said why you liked the episode other than they're funny(well duh).

I grade them as I see the episode individually. Not in 'comparison to the classic era' like some other people...

So if you grade each episode individually that means every episode has the same criteria then. So grade each episode based on the series as a whole. For shits here is my season 1 list.

Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire: B+
    Bart the Genius: A-
    Homer's Odyssey: C+
There's No Disgrace Like Home: C+
    Bart the General: A
    Moaning Lisa: A-
The Call of The Simpsons: C+
    The Telltale Head: B-
Life on the Fast Lane: A-
    Homer's Night Out C
    The Crepes of Wrath: B+
    Krusty Gets Busted: B+
    Some Enchanted Evening: B

and yes you can ask me about any of my grades and I'll actually give you a response.

Christmas- I really liked this one. Great series opener.
Genius- Hilarious! I love this one!
Odyssey- Has some okay parts, but it's pretty depressing. Liked Blinky's cameo.
Disgrace- Okay. Better then the last one and has some genuine humor.
General- Excellent! I like Bart episodes a lot.
Moaning- Pretty darn funny. I liked the subplot, and the main plot was good too. Bleeding Gums was funny.
Call of Simpsons- Nice "jungle" episode. I liked Ned and Cowboy Bob. Very funny!
Telltale- Great! It introduces a lot of characters and has a creative plot.
Night Out- Hilarious! This one was a laugh riot, and had a good lesson.
Crepes- One of my favorite episodes of all time. Hilarious, heartwarming, and epic!
Busted- Another great episode, and this one has Sideshow Bob! Everyone loves Sideshow Bob!
Enchanted Evening- Pretty good. A bit silly, but still funny.

Overall, a pretty good season. Lots of laughs.

That's exactly what I'm doing moron. I'm grading them based on The Simpsons, well what used to be, high standards and that is why the 2 episodes in question I gave A - and not A + because they are very good but not as great as A + episodes like Homer vs 18th amendment, Last Exit to Springfield etc etc

So if you grade them based on the show as a whole they will get compared to other classic era episodes? Also please don't call me a moron when it is clearly you who can't/won't back up his opinion. I'd be glad to answer any questions you have about my grades.

Okay then justify the grades you gave for the 2 episodes and we shall see what I, and the other people reading, think of such drivel.

Okay here's my justification of the two episodes grades

There's No Disgrace like Home: You mainly say you love No Disgrace because it makes you laugh. But that's pretty weak. Every Simpsons episode is supposed to make you laugh. The characters are all mis characterized and they all lack any depth. They all just act like each other. The first act is so ridden with sitcom cliches and in my view there are only a few gags in the episode worth mentioning. I do enjoy the shock therapy scene but that isn't enough to bring the episode up from anything other that a C+ grade. The only reason people seem to enjoy this episode is because it takes place in the first season when they say the writers didn't know how to characterize the family properly. But we know that is wrong based on other episodes in the first season. Plus even aside for the characterization problems the whole premise of the episode is a boring cliche and there is no subversion of the cliche. This episode is ridden with problems the show would later lampoon.

Homer's Night Out: This one I struggle with because there is really nothing good about it. Seriously the plot is terrible, the episode's humorous side loses steam by the end of the first act and the animation/voices in it are brutal. The last art of my criticism can be attributed to season 1 just finding their footing in terms of animation etc. But the plot, Homer and Marge conflict and overly sappy ending cannot. Compare the Homer/Marge conflict of the previous episode in the season(Life on the Fast Lane) and you'd be surprised it was the same show. Fast Lane has a almost cinematic feel to it and some really poignant sentimental moments(the sandwich scene). It also has a great guest star in Brooks. The chemistry he and Kavner have is great. Some of the best VA in the show's history. Homer's Night Out on the other hand has some terrible dialogue "I wonder when dad is coming home" I mean come the fuck on this is The Simpsons not some 80's sitcom on CBS. Scenes with Bart and Homer that lack any comedic value for how little is done for character development or plot development. Jesus the ending is even worse though. Homer gives a "moving" speech and just like every other 80's sitcom cliche the show had been worshiping in this episode every single person is moved and Marge instantly takes him back. Nothing is added to any of the characters at all. Nothing is said about the dynamic Homer and Marge share absolutely nothing. I could go on and on about how bad this episode is.

    Okay your turn.

    There's No Disgrace like Home:

Homer: "Okay now look, my boss is going to be at this picnic so I want you to show your father some love and/or respect"
    Lisa: "Tough choice"
    Bart: "I'm picking respect"

Mr Burns: "And this must be *looks at card* Brat"
    Bart: "Bart"
Homer: "Don't correct the man Brat"

*Entire scene where Bart attempts to win 3 legged race*

Homer: "So tonight we're not going to shovel food in our mouths while we stare at the TV. We're going to eat at the dining room table like a normal family"
    Lisa: "Happy Dad?"
    Homer: "Yes"
Lisa: "Good, commence shovelling" *Rest of family start shovelling*
Homer: "No...we're going to say grace first"
Bart: "Okay, rub a dub dub, thanks for the grub *Rest of family start shovelling once more*
Homer: "No...can the chitter and bow your head. Dear lord, thank you for this microwaved bounty, even tho we don't deserve it. I mean our kids are uncontrolled hellions pardon my french, but they act like savages, did you see them at the picnic? Oh lord why did you spite me with this family?"
Bart: "Amen, let's eat *Rest of family start shovelling for a third time*

*The Simpsons family walks over to a house in unison*
Bart: "Woah look at this place, what a dump!"
Homer: "Worse than you think, I just trampled this poor sap's flower bed"
Marge: "Homer this is our house"
    Homer: "Aaagh"

*Entire family counselling session and electro shock therapy scene with Dr Marvin Monroe*

Summary: Not one of the best classic episodes but still a classic anyhow. Thoroughly entertaining, funny scenes and well despite Homer admittedly acting out of character with regards to the TV and at the kitchen table, this episode totally deserves a A -, if not a B +

    Homer's Night Out:

*Bart opens the door to woman with package*
Bart: "Lady where's my spy camera?
*Bart and her at the same time* "Where's my spy camera? *only her muttering* for the last 6 months *both again* WHERE'S MY SPY CAMERA? WHERE IS MY SPY CAMERA? WHERE'S MY SPY CAMERA?"
Women with package: "HERE'S YOUR STUPID SPY CAMERA!"
    Bart: "Oh, thanks man"
*Bart slams the door on her*

Eugene's father: "He had given me the one thing that mattered most to him in the whole world. Eugene, when I see you, the one thing that matters most to me in the world, married tomorrow I'm going to know just how you felt that day"
Homer: "...Where am I the planet cornball?

*Bart hangs up photo of Homer and erotic dancer*
Martin: "Who's the sexy lady Bart?"
Bart: "Beats me but the guy dancing with her's my pop"
*'The future photographers of America' gasp in unison*
"He brings to mind the later work of Diane Arbus"

Mr Burns: "Simpson, I am by most measures a successful man. I have the wealth and power beyond the dreams of you and your clock punching ilk, and yet I've led a solitary life. The fair sex remains a mystery to me. You seem to have a way with women, a certain, how shall I put it? animal magnetism. Help me Simpson, tell me your secret"

*Homer is dancing with several sexy women on stage*
Mr Burns: "How does he do it Smithers?"
    Smithers: "He's a love machine"

*Homer's speech at the end altho I admit it isn't his greatest but that's kinda the point*

Summary: Good episode but potentially better. It taught a good message about women in general and it had some real funny moments i.e the verbal joust between Bart and the postwoman as I mentioned in its entirety. Entertaining but lacking in parts. Again this episode totally deserves a A -, if not a B +

Okay no more comments from either of us in this thread, we shall let the others look at what we have said over the days and they can decide who is right.

All you say in your defense is that the episodes are funny and then list the dialogue from the scenes you think are funny. I already said each episode of The Simpsons is meant to be funny but it's other aspects that make them great(satire/sentiment/character)both episodes lack anything including humor. Homer wasn't the only one out of character in There's no Disgrace like Home. What exactly does Homer's night teach you about women?

I generally agree with this statement about the (humor + satire/sentiment/character) thing but there are a handful of episodes that could be considered great just because they're laugh riots all the way through. "Homer at the Bat" isn't really that satirical, doesn't have a huge emotional core, and isn't much of a character study... But it's probably one of the funniest Simpsons episodes ever, with wall-to-wall jokes. The humor alone carries the episode.

"Last Exit to Springfield" is also a good example, although you'd probably get me on the satire condition there.

That being said, these kinds of episodes are rare, so it would take a really, really funny episode for one to argue that "There's No Disgrace Like Home" is a top episode. The episode probably is one of the funnier episodes of Season 1, particularly for the hilarious scenes at the psych clinic, the rest of it seems pretty ordinary humor-wise. The picnic is mostly filled with typical dysfunctional Simpsons quips with a little Burns-pandering on the side. The second act isn't much to write home about either, as I'm having trouble thinking of that many jokes from it.

Humor is a really subjective thing, though, so I would have trouble arguing if someone told me they thought it was the funniest episode of The Simpsons ever. I could probably string together an argument about wordplay and joke construction, but overall humor feels like such an intangible thing sometimes.

I agree the humor alone in Homer the Bat is enough to carry it(I still don't put the episode my top 10 or anything). But as you said it is extremely rare that an episode has enough humor in it to carry the episode. No Disgrace doesn't have the humor output that Bat has but it's also stunted by various problems. I actually think a majority of the episodes are funnier than No Disgrace but maybe that is just me.
