Barney's great. I really wish they didn't push him into the furthest back-row they could find but maybe after they made him drunk again they just couldn't think of much else to do with him.

But still even as a walk on he's barely a presence anymore.

I like cats. I root for Scratchy to win, but Itchy always seems to get the upper hand.

Barney is just a fascinating character that represents the RELAPSE: USA in the Simpsons. His voice is uniquely funny and some jokes associated with him are funny for me as well

Even though they've pretty much tossed him aside, Barney has still been way more important than Scratchy

I think the Itchy and Scratchy segments slightly more than any of Barney's appearances, so I voted for Scratchy. Although Barney is a bit more important to the show, I just never have enjoyed his character.

Barney's a great character, so my vote easily goes to him.

Kinda funny you put Scratchy the Cat in the title i think we all know who scratchy is you don't need to tell us he's a cat it just sounds funny. Voted for Barney even though he doesn't show up in the show much anymore I think he has a more important role in the show.

That was such a sad and cool segment. That and moleman being hit by a football made that episode.

    Barney
Kids, let me tell you about another so-called ``wicked'' guy. He had long hair and some wild ideas. He didn't always do what other people thought was right. And that man's name was...
I forget. But the point is... I forget that, too. Marge, you know what I'm talking about. He used to drive that blue car?

Principal Skinner: No Ralph this means you're failing English
Ralph: Me fail English? That's unpossible.

I voted Barney, though I am taken back by the fact he beat Moe.

    Honestly, I'm dumbfounded.

Agreed. Moe is one of the best, funniest, most interesting, and most constant secondaries the show has to offer, and that is saying quite a lot. Barney, on the other hand, is one that I think the show could have completely done without.

Mmm I think that's going a little far. Homer needed more guys his age as friends in there or else it'd just be Homer and a bartender. And Lenny and Carl as fun as they are, are just the ultimate background characters so I think Barney served a very important purpose actually as his best friend.

And even as a character Barney is probably the most depressingly tragic, and I bet to many even relatable characters because he basically defined unattained or even wasted potential. How many men out there I wonder can really relate with that kind of feeling? I like Moe better too but I think he was definitely far from disposable back in the show's hayday.

It's really something how much this show's forgotten about the character because he was actually pretty integral to it way back when.

I agree , I think Barney is not one of those characters the show could have done without.
Anyway, I voted for him in the poll.

Eh, I don't think I've really ever enjoyed any of Barney's scenes and have barely noticed his absence from the show currently. Even back in the classic era, he wasn't so much of Homer's best friend as he was just someone who happened to be at Moe's all the time and occasionally helped Homer out. Even though Lenny and Carl are the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the show, I still think they fill the role as Homer's friends just as well as Barney did. I also don't think he is necessary as the show's tragic character with wasted potential, because almost every character fits that description.

Not really. Many have that "I coulda been a contender" element yeah, but no one even as close as much as Barney, it's actually his defining characteristic. He's been constantly implied to be an absolute genius. He sings really well, he's artistic, he has a huge amount of book smarts, and he's even potentially athletic. The guy was on his way to Harvard practically but he got fucked up by one little drink given to him by Homer.

That's what's sad about him, he's one of Springfield's most pathetic people. Laying on sidewalks, giving people fliers in a diaper, and just all around being generally nonsensical and irrelevant. But he had the potential to be so much more than any of the other guys his age and he had it, but he succumbed to the drink. Most of the others his age have done comparably better than him, even the guy who pretty much fucked it all up, but he could have done better than any of them and it still shows sometimes. It reminds me of some people I've met in college who have so much potential but they get too into the party scene, and I worry that many of them will just end up a Barney. He's a pretty relevant character I say. In a lot of ways he's what the show was all about, he's a funny character but between the lines lies a really dark and tragic reality.

And plus take an episode like Mr. Plow, would that have honestly worked with Moe or Lenny and Carl in Barneys' place?

Well-put, and I agree that what Barney as a character represents and comprises is quite interesting and relevant indeed. It's just that I think his actual appearances are rarely a testament of the great character he could be, ironically. I guess you could say that I like the idea of Barney better than the actual Barney, if that makes sense.

And plus take an episode like Mr. Plow, would that have honestly worked with Moe or Lenny and Carl in Barneys' place?
Actually, as I was watching Mr. Plow recently, I was thinking to myself that I would have probably liked the episode a lot more if Moe or someone else had been in Barney's place.

  29. #29

Even if you don't personally like the character though the episode wouldn't have been the same. Thing is you'd expect that kind of thing from Moe since he's kind of an opportunist, but you wouldn't have expected it from Barney because he's just the loldrunk and he was at the time also established to be Homer's best friend.

I guess you could have replaced him with Moe, but at the time it would have been a very different episode because this was before Moe was really established as more than just Homer's bartender. Plus Flaming Moe's and this episode would have been too similar, with Moe cheating Homer out of one of his own ideas in both.

That's true, but I was just saying that as if I was thinking about Mr. Plow as a solitary episode.
