Rate & Review: "Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind" (KABF02)

    WATCH EPISODE ONLINE

    You know the drill.

Great, fantastically original episode with no loose ends, a plethora of cool and fun references to past episodes, and spot-on characterizations. More thoughts later, but for now, here are the references to old episodes I can see:

    Memory screenshots:
    - Tennis the Menace (Homer and Marge)
    - Behind the Laughter (roses falling)
    - Homer vs Lisa and the 8th Commandment (Homer and Barney at Moe's)
    - Home Sweet Home Dum Diddily Doodily (Edna and Nelson)
    - The Great Louse Detective (cops standing guard at parade)
    - Bart Gets and Elephant (Bart sees Stampy)
    - Mr. Plow (Homer and key to the city)
    - [unsure] (Marge, Homer and Bart shocked at the TV)
    - Cape Feare (witness relocation family)
    - Behind the Laughter (Simpsons xmas boogie)
    - Radioactive Man (hollywood shot)
    - Kidney Trouble (Homer running)
    - Faith Off (Bart entering sermon on skateboard)
    - Lisa's Pony (apes)
    - Call of Simpsons (Homer eating honey)
    - Homer's Triple Bypass (silent prayer for Homer at Moes)
    - Two Cars in Every Garage... (Homer scratching butt on camera)
    - Call of Simpsons (mud Homer and Bart)
    - Opening credits (Maggie)
    - Treehouse of Horror (Homer falling from ceiling)
    - Lisa Gets an A (Homer eating Pinchy)
    - Crepes of Wrath (Bart riding with Cesar)
    - Some Enchanted Evening (Marge listening to radio)
    - Treehouse of Horror (family with aliens)
    - Burns Heir (Martin singing)
    - City of New York vs Homer (Homer flashback)
    - Bart Gets Famous (Krusty introducing Bart)
    - Das Bus (kids eating boar)
    - Ice Cream of Margie (Homer bringing in sticks)
    - Tracey Ullman Short "Bath Time" (Bart with squid)

Okay, there's way too many, who am I kidding. Here are Homer's costumes in his life flashback:

    - barbershop quartet Homer
    - camera hat ("Homer Loves Apu")
    - chain neck homer (not sure... I guess maybe "Simpson Tide"?)
    - obese homer
    - town crier ("Lisa the Iconoclast")
    - sailor homer (in red for some reason)
    - waiter Homer (episode unsure)
    - Snow Homer ("Mountain of Madness")
    - Santa Homer
    - Kid clothes Homer ("Hungry Hungry Homer")
    - Jaws Wired Shut Homer
    - Hulk Homer ("I Am Furious Yellow")
    - General Homer ("The Sweetest Apu")
    - Mardi Gras King Homer ("Great Louse Detective")
    - Mr. Plow
    - Chief Homer ("The Bart of War")
    - Safety salamander
    - Indian Homer ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bangalore")
    - Army Homer ("GID'oh")
    - Ice Cream Homer ("Ice Cream of MArgie")
    - Fishing Homer (movie reference?)
    - fireman ("Crook & Ladder")

    More episode thoughts soon.

Tomacco, who wrote it? And the references are really quick, right? This isn't just an excuse for a clip show, is it?

    Copied from the preview thread:
It's not that it was a bad episode per se, but there's a few things that threw me off, such as the mediocre animation (some of it was brilliant though) for the most part, and as I mentioned, the horrible voice acting. I was watching season 6 a few hours earlier and Homer's voice now seems so forced, and it's as is he's phoning it in too.

The plot itself was well done though. Pacing was spot-on, jokes weren't too frequent, but no stinkers. My favorite quote: "Dyslexia, Duffman's secret shame!"

I'm not gonna lie, that first act was fantastic, with the Ice Age spoof and the 'Family Bath' bit.

I have a feeling this is going to be 19's best.

    Worst. Signature. Ever.

As I was watching the episode where Moe flips in pause mode of his faces I had a big feeling Chuck Sheetz was the director and I was right becuase he used it also in Springfield Up.

I like the joke where Homer destroys his memory of his first kiss and Homer forgets and Bart says "Apu".

Woooow... Now I know i've been watching too much Simpsons... when I saw the man on the couch who's head was being covered by the bottle, I automatically knew that it was Duffman, with the muscles and the light blonde hair...

Excellent episode so far, to be earnest!

J Stewart Burns wrote it. I forget who directed it.

Loved both Yellow Submarine references in the episode, by the way. Find em, they go fast! Also, Lurleen is at Homer's party (for some reason).

Wooh, a decent episode that was right to the point and didn't feel like it was wasting time. The bubble "memory" sequence and the Days of Homer's Life bit was downright awesome. (was that from a Cellphone commerical?)

    Anyway, very good: 4/5. B+

Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Gosh I would've been happy if they saved that episode for the series finale.

    It was awesome.

Wow, that episode was really good. But like all Jean era episodes, there were some things that dragged on too long, like the kids singing, the commercial in Homer's mind, and the thing near the end that showed many faces of Homer. I get the feeling that this episode came in WAY short, so they pulled every trick short of adding an Itchy & Scratchy episode.

Either way, great episode. The part where Apu and Homer were kissing was pretty funny and I was surprised that I laughed at it, because normally I hate that stuff. It also had a great ending, I was expecting something really stupid but an emotional ending was a nice surprise.

    4/5.

And Chuck Sheetz was the director.

I registered just to say that, that was the most complete Simpsons episode I have seen in a while.

    Great episode.

I wish Chuck Sheetz didn't direct it. Someone else could have made this episode an animation masterpiece.

Wow, this was better than I expected! It had that sort of Oakley/Weinstein "experimental episode" vibe to it, but it was really original. I especially loved the "Homer's life" Youtube spoof and the great animation (complete with stills from past eps).

I might say more later, but I'm giving it a 5/5 for being the best episode probably since "Springfield Up."

IMHO the best so far of the season, and definitely the weirdest. The only thing lacking are a few more funny jokes/moments.

Hmph. It wasn't too funny, but it was a unique way to approach trying to make an episode feel original. I'll have to see it again, but for now it gets a solid 4/5. The highest rated episode of the season for me so far.

    Good bye crueller world.

Wow, what an awesome episode. Easily a 5/5.

    5/5.

In case you were wondering, it said The End? because of the writers' strike, which could very well end the show forever.

Yeah, that bugged me more than anything else in the episode. (aside from the advertisement for the Simpsons Movie DVD that took up the half the screen  ).

I liked this one. Some good parodies throughout and seeing the old episodes included was really awesome. I loved the youtube thing and the video parody. The scrat beginning was pretty funny as well. Prolly the second best if not best of the season so far. 4/5

Maybe I'm a little crazy but is the saxamaphone part Lisa plays in the opening sequence been different for a few episodes this season? Also my mind was blown because the ending credits first name (jean) wasn't in the center of the screen it was a little higher.
