Rate & Review "Midnight Towboy" (JABF21)

"Feeling that Maggie is getting too clingy, Marge hires a counselor to teach her the "C.R.I.E. Method," a counseling program that helps parents raise their children to be very independent at an early age. But the method works a little too well, leaving Maggie with no need for Marge at all. Meanwhile, Homer goes in search of milk for Maggie in Mookington and ends up having his car towed by a tow truck driver named Louie (guest star Matt Dillon) who introduces Homer to the joy of towing cars for a living. Louie invites Homer to be the tow truck driver for Springfield on one condition: that Homer stay off of Louie's turf in Mookington. When Homer gets a little too "tow happy," the residents of Springfield set Homer up to look like he's towing in Louie's territory, and Homer must suffer the wrath. With Homer missing, the newly independent Maggie is spurred to action."

    Surprisingly excellent episode.

HOWEVER! That "end of act 2" super is EXACTLY what I'm talking about when I say the show gives the audience no credit in getting jokes lately.

Funniest couch gag I've seen in a while.

A fairly good episode, in spite of the unusually smug meta-references. ;-/ Stephanie Gills improved greatly since "See Homer Run". Proves what the new blood are capable of.

i gave it a 2/5, I love the Simpsons and never gave anything less than a three, but this episode just felt waaaaaaaay too much like a cartoon and nothing like The Simpsons, the episode sorta redeemed itself in act III with Bart & Milhouse's Bible swearwords and the heartfelt ending was nicely done... But too many missed jokes (especially the end of 2nd act joke, that actually annoyed me)

That was a wonderful episode. Hilarious jokes, great direction, sweet ending. I wish this wasn't a holdover, because my expectations would skyrocket for S19 if this would have been a post-Simpsons Movie episode. As it is, I'm still very pleased with this season so far.

Maybe I was missing something here, but I really wasn't a huge fan of this episode. Almost every joke with potential immediately flatlined thanks to Jean's need to explain it lest the audience not understand it. (I will admit to laughing at Homer's attempt at towing Arnie Pie.) The plot itself wasn't half bad; in fact it was probably the best of the three "Homer Gets a Job" plots this season and the Maggie subplot wasn't that terrible, I just wish it hadn't been so dull in its delivery.

All three episodes of this season have surprised me, I'm kinda impressed.

Favorite moment: Bart and Milhouse clipping out curses from the Bible.

I thought this one was really good it had both great physical humor (like bart skateborading while hanging on to homer's tow truck. and good verbal humor (ned quoting the Uncle ben line from spider man then homer saying "Who said that? I'll kill them with my power!"

the maggie sub plot wasnt great but it was nice to see a sub plot that did work and i always like it when the two stories dovetail (or come together) at the end.

Other thoughts: Mr T is the Lion King (very funny sign gag and something i would actually pay to see)

Marge holding the sack of potatoes is both really sad yet funny.

It wasnt the most realistic or perfectly coherent episode but I think it worked well and it made me laugh so 4/5

I really liked that too. It was so random and unexpected. I always enjoy seeing Bart, Lisa, Milhouse, etc acting their age.

Wow I'm surprised everyone liked it, the second it ended I thought it would get ripped apart. I'm usually really supportive of current Simpsons but I didn't like this episode. I just didn't laugh at all really. A few funny things. Maybe it's just me.

Wait what? A good episode? That was the last thing I was expecting.

But that is exactly what we got. Even though it was the tired old, Homer-gets-a-new-job plot, the episode was still somehow hilarious. Only a few jokes didn't hit and everyone seemed in character. It didn't diverge into some whacky plot that makes no sense either, and that gives it serious bonus points. This is definately the best episode we've gotten since The Haw-Hawed Couple. It might be even better. Overall, just the kind of quality I want to see out of the Simpsons these days.

Wow, Stephanie Gillis! I hadn't really missed her, but she wrote a surprisingly better "Homer job" ep than her last one, the Safety Salamander gig. Ugh.

Mixed feelings, I suppose. I felt Homer was more or less in top form. A few things made me feel uncomfortable - the "towtalitarian" thing with Lenny, the Santa shoot-out, Marge's potato sack and things.

A few things I did like though: A reason for Maggie's sudden competence and independence as opposed to "superhuman strength" from S11, Matt Dillon's character and Homer thinking he's Louie's boss. Homer correcting Flanders when he called him "Tow-mer" made me chuckle. Also, pointing out the strangeness of the "Shrek" films picked me up. Heh, Shrek was noted in the last Stephanie Gillis ep as well, come to think of it.

The other characters were more or less in top form.

I felt so odd when Bart crashing into the back of Homer's truck. Am I the only one who laughed when Homer and Bart just started cracking up after Bart hit the truck head-on at 35 mph?

Ah well. Keep it up... but I'm REALLY glad the next ep will be Marge-centric. Really, REALLY glad. Two women writers in a row, too. Sweet! Has that ever happened?

Is it just me or do these new episodes keep on slowly and steadily getting better? I'm sitting at, like, a B+ with this right now... I really did enjoy it and felt it worked fairly well... both plots, even, though Maggie's development felt a little sudden to me. Though you could still tell they really did have to pack it in there (three minutes left for Maggie to rescue Homer?), but I'm happy that the start of the episode was actually properly relevant to the rest of it, and not just a "bunch of stuff happens" fest.

That said, more of the jokes blew for me, and meta-references are annoying. "This would be the end of act 2!" Christ, stop it. And acknowledging that Homer gets a job plots are overdone does not make up for it... You're full well aware of it, so why do you stop it? Three confusing lines hardly make up for it and it's so overdone it isn't funny anymore.

But why do there have to be other people like Homer? Can't he, himself, screw up and not being following some unseen crowd that did it once before? I thought the episode was working pretty perfectly (aside from meta references) before the other two truck drivers appeared.

But really, overall, I did enjoy this. Leaps and bounds over See Homer Run. I need to watch it again but a stand-out bit for me was the ending shot of act 2... I thought it was really well-drawn and really liked it.

Is it wrong to like this episode Too Much? ..cause I did! 5/5
Seeing Marge knee that baby specialist in the groin was cool. ..would've been funnier if she was a dude, but oh well. Homer rules as a Tow truck driver!

Pretty good! 4.25/5 from me. My favorite parts were the naughty mudflaps and Bart and Milhouse with the bible. If the holdovers are this good then I have high hopes for the true season 19 eps!

One more comment: is this season 10 all over again or what? Every episode is Homer-centric!
