    What the hell?

Every other post of yours in this topic, and in several other topics, has reinforced your belief that you think this is a terrible season. What the heck is with suddenly changing your opinion?

    Talk about contradiction...

I find it funny that apparently "a lot of good" episodes and "a few bad" ones equals a "great" season.

    I agree with this much.

It would be particularly useful for times when a casual fan makes the statement, 'I can't say I've ever seen a truly bad Simpsons episode.'

Oh, please. S11 had as much heart as Celeberty Deathmatch and wasn't even half as funny. Now that almost 10 years has passed, every goddamn Smpsons apologist is lableling this godawful season as a classic just because it's part of the 'good old days.' Strip away the nostalgia, this season is fucking terrible and as they say, "a well aged turd is still a turd."

"Alone again, Natura-diddly", as sad as it was to kill Maude off, years later when I look back upon it, it feels like a sad but perfectly good move to pull off not without it's risks as life won't always be perfect, even in the world of cartoons
"World of cartoons?" What's this supposed to mean? All animation is somehow based in a the most surrealist of settings and only non-sensical, magical things can occur? Or, becasue the Simpsosn is a cartoon, even the most schizophrenic storytelling suddenly 'makes sense'? Did you miss the first seven or eight seasons when the show was more grounded in reality than not?

and it was a well done episode at that (hell, look at the death of Optimus Prime and how well that was pulled off, despite the sadness it brought so many children back in the 80's but many people still prefer the '86 version even with such a death over the new 2007 Transformers).
The Simpsons is now on the same plane as the Transformers? Wow...just wow.

It may not be perfect, but season 11 is still worth watching.
Not only did you degrade the Simpsons into the status of a childrens cartoon, you forced the stereotype that all cartoons are just animated tomfoolery. Double fail. Also, I wouldn't call S11 a legitamate Simspsons season, but the "Homer and Friends Wacky Half-Hour."

Anyway, enjoy your S11 in it's "Green" packaging, as in you'll have to shell out more "Green" to buy another set once the DVDs get all scratched to hell.

    I agree with this much.

It would be particularly useful for times when a casual fan makes the statement, 'I can't say I've ever seen a truly bad Simpsons episode.'
And I can say: "There's a person who just doesn't care."
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Well season 11 is still a good, it had some wacky moments there were the time when homer was having a crazy party on mr. burns ship and got attack by pirats, and then marge got kiddnappe by those biker gangs and homer going after them was kind of funny and battling them with 2-ton motocycles was one of the funny wacky moments in the shows history.other then that season 11 is a great classic with fun wonderful stories to enjoy and is not that bad of a season but a great season.

Sometimes schizophrenic storytelling is acceptable within the bounds of an animated show, even to the Simpsons.

I think it's unfair to judge a show that's willing to take a few chances with its humor, and step away from an excessive standing on reality. There's a precarious balance between realism and melodrama. If the writers didn't try new ways of telling a story and making it funny to the viewing audiences, the show would have become as static and stale as the second season.

Here's how you write a story: Establish a confilict, drama arises from said conflict, the characters evolve and solve the problem and reach a resolution. That's how entertainment of any sort is supposed to work, regardless of the season, because you don't just build your episodes out of a string a related jokes that make up a plot. When Groening gave the Simpsons to Scully, it was like giving the keys to a Lamborguni (sp) to a drunk 14yr old and I'm sure the only people who enjoyed the Scully Simpsons and a drunk 14yr Lambo driver were....14yr olds, or younger.

I think it's unfair to judge a show that's willing to take a few chances with its humor, and step away from an excessive standing on reality. Look at the show's style change compared from the first (or second) season to the eighth season. It was great that entire 8 year run and with the exception of a sub-par episode here and there, the Siimpsons was awesome. Then in a period of two seasons (9-11) with the same show runner, the show went from smartass to dumbass, placed the emphasis on basically one family member (guess which one!) and took all the subtelty out of the humor.

And if you really do want to say "change" is acceptable, Mirkin changed the show, but still managed to keep the humor when he took over, even though S5 & S6 had less "heart" than the first 4, but because the show did such a good job in transitional styles with the changes in show runners, you probably didn't really notice (or care). It's only when the hack that ran S9-12 made a BLATANT, flying the face style change to the show that made his tenure unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.

Or to paraphrase Homer: "...the show should be louder, angrier, and more proactive!". In essence, Scully "Poochified" the show. And when the creators prided themselves on trying to seperate themselves from a stereotypical cartoon, Scully welcomed the concept of generic cartoon slapstick with open arms. IMO, the paranoia that the long-time fans were going to leave around the 10th season led the staff (minus Groening who was working on Futurama) to DUMB DOWN the show to appeal to 8yr olds on a sugar high and/or up and coming Family Guy fans.

I hate to use the cliche "you're not a true fan!" (in fact 99% of the time it makes me vomit in terror) but for the people that kiss S10 - S12's styling's ass, you're not true fans of what the Simpsons is--A satire on the typical "American Family" that doesn't pander to cartoonish sensibilities. Scully, on the otherhand fostered the fanbase that believes that saying the Simpsons is a cartoon makes it okay for shit writing, shit directing, and an overall shitty show (with a profitable name) existance absolutely justified.

Not being too bothered about getting this Season, I got it as an Xmas present. The box is pretty 'an all but the idea that you have to squeese the discs out is just terrible. Discs aren't meant to be touched, but here you have to touch them to get them out. A nitpick, maybe, but after years of doing it there likely to get scratched. Never mind! I also feel the box is tacky. Even thinner than Season One, it appears they've gone for the cheap but cheerful option. Cheerful, yes. But the cheap really ruins it for me. I'd happily pay an extra quid for a decent box. just compare the quality of the box to the likes of Season Four or Five. They really are quality. Anyway, it's only a box, I guess! I have yet to see the episodes as you may expect seeing as I've just got it. But if it's the same as I remembered it's the worst Season. Oh the Christmas joy! Well at least the Season's can only get better! Happy Christmas everyone!

I just got this for Christmas and I agree, the packaging is terrible, but the artwork is still creative. I have watched the first 4 episodes so far and I must say, it's not THAT bad. I enjoyed myself watching so far and thats all that matters. I'm aware of how lousy the writing is, but I still have a certain respect for this season. It's not classic simpsons, yet I'm still laughing. Don't ask.

Watched the first Disc and I must say the audio commentaries seem to be lacking a little. Not as funny or informative, I think the commentaries definitely miss Matt Groening.

Having nothing to do on Boxing Day, I watched the first 10 episodes already. Pretty damn poor for OFF standards. But overall, most certainly watchable. Most episodes have graded around the B- mark so far.

Wait, you don't own ANY Simpsons DVDs? Not even a loose Season 1 disc? I'm certain that there is some charity which helps the less fortunate. You do own a DVD player, right? Oh well, I'm sure one has been donated as well...

  30. #1350

Well i do own a dvd vhs player. but i only have a few video tapes of the first episodes of season 1.
