Are there detailed pictures of the packaging already (booklet, the inside etc.) or have I missed them somehow?

  3. #543

I'm not going to lie. I have the DVD already from a specialist R1 seller on ebay and I'm in the UK.

The box itself has quite sharp edges this time around, so be careful whilst opening the £23 head version is my tip.

Woah, I just watched a few season 10 episodes (it's been a long time ago) to see if it's worth buying the new dvdset, but the writing is so goddamn juvenile, underdeveloped and lazy. I honestly forgot how poor the season is compared to the previous ones. In memory it seemed like a pretty decent season, but come to think of it, it's really not. I might just end up buying it for the commentaries and the odd decent/good episode like The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace, but it will be a pity-buy lol.

John Swartzwelder wrote 5 episodes in this season?!

EDIT: Uh-oh, I just ordered the region 1 season 10 dvd, getting it next wednesday. I fuckin' told you it was tempting haha. I hope I'll get something good out of it.

Yeah, season 10 is my least favorite. I never understood why 11 and 12 reap all the hatred... well, I can understand 11 a little bit, but I always felt 11 and 12 were vast improvements. I'll probably get season 10 eventually, when I start buying more seasons on DVD.

Well...it isn't my least favorite. I prefer all the scully seasons to those of Al Jean . Atleast they're not lifeless like a corpse and boring.

My theory is that some people consider season 10 the worst because it is the most shrill season ever...easily. But if you really watch it maybe from a different angle, you'll realize it has some of the spark left over from earlier seasons in terms of joke-writing. That also explains why really casual fans often think the classic seasons are 3-10, or "the show died when Maude died", etc...they may be misguided but they're not idiots.

I don't mean that Scully should agree with me about the quality of season 10; as far as he's concerned it was a good season. But I've listened to a handful of his commentaries and I can't get a handle on what exactly he was going for in most episodes. Oakley and Weinstein will usually explain some kind of overarching concept or reason for doing an episode, whether it's exploring a character or stretching the boundaries of the show. A lot of the Scully commentaries seem to have him and the writers talk about the basic plot idea (what if Homer did XYZ) and then they laugh at all the jokes.

It strikes me that that's part of the problem with this period of the show,

Ive been predicting this myself. Seasons 5-6 are my favorite. Who would have thought - Mirkin is a great commentator! He can be over-bearing to down right annoying, BUT it's so lively and enjoyable to listen to. Its like a radio show.

Reiss/Jean provide some good info and facts..O & W were great at talking about fan reaction/reception along with interesting tidbits.

Scully commentaries so far (Ive only heard S9..Getting S10 today, so may update) are pretty boring. No real info or exciting story to hear about. No good questions. He's witty, but maybe just seems unprepared for them.

The commentaries are really seeming to parallel the show. It's amazing.

It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."

Just bought the set at Target for $30. They give you a $5 Target gift card with the set, so it's a pretty good deal.

Huh, Ivan was right: Treehouse of Horror IX WAS animated by Anivision. I've changed the error in my animation studios guide: http://www.freewebs.com/speedyboris/simpsons.htm (BLATANT PLUG) That's weird how it listed it as Rough Draft in reruns; not sure why that is.

  19. #559

Woohoo! Got mine from Target $5 off, and $5 gift card.

The cashier didnt give me the card at first. I walked out to my car before I realised what happend. She stuck the card in her drawer. I dont know if it was a weird mistake, or she was trying to steal it

Ive been spending money like Congress so every $ I can save helps.

So I ordered this about a week ago on amazon.com (also with They Might Be Giants' The Else) as super saver shipping. Now I'm no newbie to Amazon, but I've never got a season from amazon. (usually picked it up from Best Buy on release date) I don't care how long it takes, I'm only worried about the price. I got an email saying that if the price on my order goes down it will be billed as that but I got billed as last weeks' price (32.49) not 29.99 as it is now. But 2.50 is no big deal. Just waitin' now...

Edit: Oh man I just realized I have a 5$ gift card from Target for doing some survey in school, well who cares I don't have a Target even remotely close anyway

Okay, I won't be buying this for a while, but I have to ask: what's the preview for the Simpsons Movie DVD like? Thanks...

  24. #564

Meh. These ep's suck as bad as I remember.

The Halloween ep is pretty good.

  25. #565

They should have a preview of the Simpsons Game

I've watched the commentaries on "Sunday Cruddy Sunday", "Kidney Trouble", "Viva Ned Flanders", and "Mom and Pop Art". I gotta say, I don't wanna be that Scully-basher guy, but the quality of the commentaries is really parallel with the quality of the episodes. They just don't talk about... well, anything, really. They just tend to laugh at the jokes, explain them, try to remember who wrote each bit, and compare them to past and later similar jokes. They don't get into any real history behind the episodes very much, they don't talk about fan reactions, and most of all, they don't talk about the inspiration behind the stories (except for Al - before he had to run to get back to the movie). Scully, himself, doesn't say anything about where he wanted to take the show direction-wise as showrunner or anything either. Usually I marathon-watch season sets with the commentaries, but I'm not really in the mood to sit through so many lacklustre commentaries on so many lacklustre episodes. Hearing endless laughing during "Homer Simpson in Kidney Trouble" was tough enough.

On the plus side, the deleted scenes were actually pretty good! Better than most sets, some genuinely good bits were left out. I didn't care for the alternate endings/versions of some things, like the ending of "Viva Ned Flanders", but the actual cut scenes were above the usual average of deleted scenes, IMO.
    Signature.

  27. #567

Yea. I think I'll slip back into my days of just trying to enjoy the show and forget the commentaries. Kinda what I did during S2. When theyre not enjoyable all they do is ruin the mystique of the show.

Dont listen to Lard of The Dance. I had to stop it half way through I was so bored.

I picked it up earlier today, I've been about town and only had a chance to watch the extras on disc 4 at a cafe. The CC's and Butterfinger ad's animation quality is better than the show! Almost Simpsons Movie quality! The prank calls feature was fun, I can see why the gag died though. The Simpsons Movie preview was awesome, I wish the cut scene was fully animated and in the movie. It really brings Springfield together.

The packaging was the best yet! The details in both the package art and DVD menus reference a lot of season 10 moments. I also enjoy the mini narrative of Bart breaking into FOX (cover art) and causing havok (inside art). Like the Lisa Jazz themed season 9 set, it highlights Bart's traits well. Inventive disc art and booklet. I wish I could work with the design staff of The Simpsons DVDs, they must really have a lot of fun.

Now I wonder whats next for seasons 11-15. I'm hoping highlighting secondary characters and their specific locations. Apu/Kwik-E-Mart, Moe/Moe's Tavern, Burns/Power Plant, Comic Book Guy/Android's Dungeon and Krusty/The Krusty the Clown Show would be a fun series.
