damn, i wish i had known about the coupon before i got it.

i think the biggest problem i have with this season is that the episodes always have to have some sort of big wacky climax. "Homer can't just be a trucker, he has to fight off an army of truckers angry for him blabbing about their scam!", "Apu can't just give gifts to Manjula, Homer has to get in a fight with a sky-writer and get dragged through a field of roses!" and so on and so on.

I think a lot of Scully's episodes suffered from bad third acts. His seasons would probably be a lot less despised if every episode didn't end with some over-the-top action sequence.

Here's a fun question. Do you guys like season 10 better on dvd than when you saw it on tv? And, how many episodes do you like enough to say they hold up to previous seasons?

I gotta say that I do. All the cuts and speedups and other crap they do to the syndicated episodes can really ruin them. This is the first time I'm watching season 10 episodes as they originally aired (except maybe the Tokyo episode, I remember watching that a long time ago when I was a kid) and a lot of them seem better than they do reruns.

I was still recording season 10 when it aired. So it's pretty much the same as I remember it. I probaly hadn't seen the tapes in 4-5 years though. Theres good jokes here and there. But you really have to turn your brain off and forget the earlier seasons.

I was really shocked when I got the earlier season box sets (1-7). Hadnt taped any of those original airings. I was shocked to see what I had never seen before as a result of the syndication cuts. Some of it was probaly good to have been cut out..others were important to the plot.
"Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."

Sorry for being a little late, but here's my initial reactions of the DVD set:

No qualms about the video/audio quality, as it looks and sounds really nice.

The Simpsons Movie DVD sneak peek was OK, glad to see that they put in the disc 4 menu and not try to force it upon us as the DVD booted up like they did on disc 1 of the season 9 set.

I really enjoyed watching the featurette on how they made the DVD menus, I'd always thought those menus were done in Flash. Silly me. The crank call featurette is ok, nothing special. Always a nice touch to see all of the commercials they did during that year. Otherwise, the bonus features are mostly the same old stuff. Not that it's a bad thing, but I'm still waiting for a comprehensive "making of an episode" documentary to appear on a future set.

Certain episodes I like more, certain episodes I like less. There's no real season spanning trend. Not many episodes hold up to classic era standards, but there are definitely a few standouts.

I enjoyed S10 far more on DVD than on TV, but the poor third acts still stick out as a big problem for the season as a whole, since they usually undercut the drama built up throughout the episodes.

I got the standard box season 10 box set earlier today and so far most of the eps are okay. The menus and box set art look great

Got this about a week ago. I've been meaning to post in here sooner but haven't got round to it.

The box and discs look really cool and although I tend to see shiny gold cardboard things as a tad tacky, I can make an exception on this. Also like the 20th Centuary Fox gags at the beginning of each disc.

Watched pretty much every episode that I needed refreshing on, and watched about half the commentaries. It sort of reminds me of how average it was, but I enjoyed seeing episodes again which I hadn't seen in a good 2 years. Glad that I now have those episodes that were so hard to find finally on DVD. My favourite of the season is probably Lisa gets an "A". Least favourite is probably Maximum Homerdrive.

what do you mean with 20 century fox gags tell me without spoiling the gags themselves

Almost exactly what Grissom said(although I still have yet to finish the set). Some episodes, I enjoy a lot more than before. I used to really dislike I'm with Cupid, but now, with the exception of a few details, I really enjoy it a lot. However, others, like Screaming Yellow Honkers or D'ohin in the Wind I really really dislike, when I thought they were mediocre or even decent before. So it has definately been a mixed bag, but luckily it hasn't been a disaster like season 11.

Well it's hard to explain without ruining the jokes. Basically, Bart vandalises the 20th Century Fox logo in various ways.

Just got done listening to the Mayored to the Mob commentary and I thought Mark Hemel’s includment was really refreshing, he seemed to know more about the show then anyone else in the room, which probably makes this the closest thing to an official fan commentary. I was also interested to hear that he jumped at the chance to be a guest star, before I though it was some favour to one of his kids and he had turned them down several times previously. I almost wish they had had him on every episode commentary for the hell of it.

I certainly like season 10 better now that I have it on DVD. I never disliked it, but since I cannot remember what it was like when the shows were "first run," and I can only remember seen the shows splashed with other various syndicated episodes, I never fully appreciated season 10 until now. It's really not a bad season. I do agree with those who have said the third acts on many shows could have been better. Still, 10 is better on DVD then I remember it being prior in syndicated form.

    Hey everyone

I thought I would be disappointed in the season 10 episodes but I'm loving them. I was going through the episode list with my friend and saying stuff like "ah this one is kind of crappy" "oh this one's stupid" etc, then I'd re-watch them and laugh the entire time. Screamin' Yellow Honkers is an example of this.

I LOVE the commentaries. They're so much fun. Hell I just love listening to them laugh. You kind of see jokes in a new way and it's fascinating to me which jokes still surprise them.

I love when Homer finds the 3 peanuts stuck together and goes "Marge! Look what I did!" and Matt Selman just says "...'DID'."

I just got the DVD set (havn't watched it yet though) and one thing I noticed right away was how sturdy and well put together my DVD box was (I got the standard and not the head). The cases the discs are in are very strong, and the booklet that outlines the features on the DVD itself is very strong as well.

I'm looking forward to watching this set, and judging from the reactions/reviews others have been giving, I'm gonna look at this set as average. I'm hoping that by having low expectations for this set it will "WOW" me

Not a lot of episodes got cut during this season. But every season 10 episode is heavily compressed in syndication (that means, the episode is played faster than normal). Watch a scene in a syndicated season 10 episode with a music cue and notice how "rushed" it is. On the DVD set, it's paced perfectly. So I'm going to have to agree that watching the Season 10 DVDs are better than watching them in syndication, even though there are a few bad eggs. The coloring is rich and the pacing is just right for every scene.

A lot of episodes are played faster in syndication, but it's not obvious unless you watch the original and syndicated versions simultaneously. But the season 10 episodes were played much faster to the point where you can tell everything's being rushed. Specifically it somewhat ruins the Adults/Kids song in Wild Barts Can't Be Broken. Thankfully, if you own the Season 10 DVDs, you can watch each episode with the scenes well paced.
