I love this episode. The Shinning was a great parody of The Shining, I love how Homer gets his urge to kill back after having to watch the Tony's. Time and Punishment was great, the Mr. Peabody and Sherman part was funny. "Quiet you!" XD
I liked Nightmare Cafeteria as well. The ending was a bit creepy though. Especially them singing "One" inside out :-O.
"Alright, alright, if it will make you happy, I'll overthrow society."

"Time and Punishment" is my favorite out of all three of them.

By far the greatest TOH episode ever made. Not particularly for the segments, but just for the overall greatness.

Sure, "The Shinning" was excellent, but I don't think it would be my first choice if I was asked what the best segment is.

I loved the closing scene. You know, "the fog that turns people inside out" scene.

    Classic. Brilliant. Masterpiece. The Simpsons.

Ha, never saw this until now.

This is personally, the best THOH of the entire lot!! Exceeds expectations on all accounts.

Totally hilarious. The Shinning was one of the best Simpsons parodies ever, every shot was dead-on. This had everything a THOH is in need of: zillions of parodies, flip-flopping, screwed-up characterization, gore and violence so over the top and gratuitous that you can just tell the writers are trying as hard as they can to nauseate as many people as possible, especially the censorship board. (Remember, this aired long before South Park. With an audience of several million. At 8 PM) True, Nightmare Cafeteria is not as good as the first two, but its still above average. Willie's stabbed-in-the-back running joke is a rare and great addition, and the end: randomest gag ever. (Hey, Marge's hair has innards!). 5/5

I only saw the film, The Shining for the first time last night. Straight after, I stuck this THOH on. Watching The Shinning was like was a new episode! Outstanding first act and the second act is probably my favourite THOH act. The third act was very good, but a slight step down from 1+2. A

I'll be echoing all the "best Treehouse" remarks. Admittedly, "Nightmare Cafeteria" is merely okay, but both "The Shinning" and "Time and Punishment" are my two favorite segments in Treehouse history.

This episode, not only being my favorite THOH, but it's in my top five of favorite episodes of all time. Solid 5/5. And not just because of 'The Shinning' segment. Also because of the 'A Chorus Line' parody. And 'Time and Punishment'. Sure, 'Nightmare Cafateria' was good. But I think 'The Shinning' should have ended it. Because they should have saved the best for last.

A top ten episode for me I would have to say. I adore all three of the segments. To think this was once considered too graphic of an episode to be entertaining. 5/5

First two segments are brilliant especially Time and Punishment but I never cared to much for Nightmare Cafeteria, I do love the Üterbraten themed day though.

Oh my great good God! Gentlemen, your attention please. I am detecting a gigiantic amphibious life-form, it's 80 meters long and it's heading this way. Oh good glayven it's on my shoe. It's a small frog, just get off, just get off there, just get out of it, get out of it. Stupid machine, oh wait a minute, this isn't the Monsterometer, it's the Frog-Exaggerator Mm-hai.

Hands-down, the best THOH ever made. The Shinning is my favorite segment, from beginning to end it's an absolutely hysterical piece with some of the best scenes ever in The Simpsons, just like the "No TV and no beer make Homer go crazy." part which is one of the funniest and best-animated in the whole series. Time And Punishment was another hilarious masterpiece, with Homer's hand being jammed twice in the toaster, Ned as the world leader, Abe's advice and the multiple changes in the Simpsons family and house. Nightmare Cafeteria is weaker, but it's hard to compare with what could easily be the best first act ever in the series, and in the end was also brilliant and plenty of great jokes (like Marge's speech, "The joy of cooking Milhouse" or the "Uterbraten"). I think it's quite underrated.
And not only the segments, the introduction was easily among the funniest ever and I couldn't stop laughing with the absolutely random and creepy ending.

Leaving the laughs aside, they are still completely solid and entertaining storylines, and even scary. As Mirkin defended, a good Halloween has to keep a slightly terrifying tone, and it was also seen in THOH IV. I miss that in most of the Halloweens (classics and post-classics), probably the ones that transmitted better the Mirkin-ish point of view were Send In The Clones (THOH XIII) and Homer3 (THOH VI). Here, Nightmare Cafeteria was the most effective at this aspect, and I remember being afraid at certain parts of it in my childhood.

I don't know what else to say. Everything has been already stated in this thread. One of the best episodes ever, top15 (if not top10) material. 10/10

Treehouse of Horror five is a 100/100 type of episode because all three segments are very, very well written especially the first segment The Shinning,I also like the third segment Nightmare Cafeteria. My most favourite part of THOH five is when Homer says ''can't murder now - eating. The second segment is also a very exellent part of THOH five.

THE best ThoH ever made. The first two acts are A-pluses and N.Cafeteria is a solid A-minus.

This is the only THoH to make it into my top 20.
