R&R for Treehouse of Horror V

My favorite THOH. Every segment was hilarious, some even scary at times. I enjoyed 'The Shinning' most. Over all, I give it a 5/5

Thanks again Gorak, another R&R thread that is needed for the archive! And as for my review:

My favourite THOH. Every segment is fantastic and I love the running joke. What really stands out to me is The Shinning. Last October, when I was watching the season 6 DVD through for the first time, BBC showed The Shining late one night. I watched it and thought it was pretty amazing. Afterwards, I couldn't sleep, so I decided to put on the season 6 DVD and coincidently, this was the next episode that I needed to watch. It was like watching the episode for the first time. The camera angles and set design are all completely spot on to the movie and it's just great. The other two segments are also great, but they don't compare to The Shinning.

Everything about this episode is spectacular. Each part of the episode is hilarious, brilliantly animated, filled with humour that doesn't stop until the episode is over, and there's never a dull moment.

The Shining parody is what really puts it over. Best...Simpsons...parody...ever!

    10/10, it's in my top 5.

By far the best THOH, ever segment is hilarious, sometimes it upsets me that they still make THOH episodes, because they get consistently worse, the Shinning is the best segment in THOH history

5/5 - Is there any other answer? Spectacular episode and the best THOH of the entire series.

This is one of the two best Treehouse of Horrors, along with ThOH IV. It has a great opening, two of my all-time favority segments, and although the third act is weaker, it is still solid

Looks like I'm the only one here that gave 4/5 to this episode.
I don't like the last story that much,it kinda brought this one down a bit.

I actually gave this a 4/5. I love the first two segments, but after those two brilliant acts, I find that Nightmare Cafeteria brings the show down a bit. I can't exactly explain how, but it just didn't make me laugh the way the Shinning or Time and Punishment got me laughing. If the rest of the episode were of Nightmare Cafeteria's quality, even if it wouldn't be as funny, it would seem a lot more even and perhaps deserving of 5/5. But when the first two segments are so brilliant here, the decline in humor just comes across as very noticeable. This is still a great Treehouse of Horror. Still 9.5/10, A. But because of a .5 subtraction, this episode only gets a 4/5. I find THOH III and IV a bit better.

The third act is comparatively weak, but the first two are too groin-grabbingly transcendent not to award a perfect grade and the title of "Best THOH Ever."

Still 9.5/10, A. But because of a .5 subtraction, this episode only gets a 4/5. I find THOH III and IV a bit better.
But a 9.5 out of 10 works out to be a 5/5. Unless of course you only give 5/5 if it's a perfectly perfect score, in which case I'll shuttup.

^Yeah. I only give out 5/5s for perfection. An episode might be a 9.75/10, but because of one minor, but apparent flaw, the episode would get a 4/5.

Treehouse of Horror V is one of the more inconsistent episodes of its type. It goes from good, to very good, to good again. Plus the inside out thing at the end was disgusting, not funny. I will rate each segment on its own:

The Shinning: A very good title and a very good spoof of the Shinning. However, this may be taken with a grain of salt, as the Shinning was never comedically inclined. This is obvious here. There are a couple of funny segments, like Homer announcing his plans to go crazy. However, most of it is neither particularly funny nor particularly scary (okay, fair enough, I wasn't expecting this, but still...). It was pretty entertaining however, so it gets a B+.

Time and Punishment: A great, great segment. This episode is emphatically epitomised by the "Quiet You!" line. The alternative universes with the Simpsons are also funny and sometimes quite intriguing as well - what could the Simpsons have been in another universe? Also, lets not forget Homer's rampage, along with his attempts to fix his toaster. A (as it started off a little slowly)

Nightmare Cafeteria: Not quite as good as the first two, even though I would not consider it a bad segment. With a few exceptions, this episode isn't that funny; more morbid than anything. ("Free-range children!" Ha!) The ending is also a little bit unsatisfying. B

The inside out thing at the end also knocks the grade down a little bit...so, all up Treehouse of Horror V would get a B, as opposed to a B+. Inconsistent and a bit dissappointing compared to other Treehouse of Horror episodes.

The only truly classic THOH (though VII and IX come close). It starts with a great movie parody/satire ("The Shinning"), and only got better from there. "Time and Punishment" and "Nightmare Cafeteria" are both top-5 Halloween stories, easily. All three deliver a great mix of humour and suspense (which isn't easy, and wasn't quite accomplished as well in the first four THOHs), and the running gag of Willie getting axed in all three segments (though not in the CBC edit) was the icing on the cake. 5/5, easily.
Bart: "Please don't call our parents!"
Chief: "I'm afraid I have to for hijinks like these. Hijinks - it's a funny word. Three dotted letters in a row."
    Eddie: "Is it hyphenated?"
Chief: "It used to be, back in the good old days, you know. Of course, every generation hyphenates the way it wants to. Then there's *NSYNC! What the hell is that? Jump in any time there, Eddie, these are good topics."

    Fantastic! 5/5. Hilarious!

The first time I saw the Time and Punishment section as a kid...I laughed so hard that I could barely breathe.

    5/5!

This might be my favorite TOH ever. Each segment is incredible and can stand up on its own merits, each of them is a masterpiece that I can watch again and again.

5/5 Amazing. This is one of the few episodes that I enjoy watching several times in the same month. Most others, I can only watch every so often or they get a tad bit stale.
she didnt exactly read shrek the 3rd, which apparently exists as some sort of companion book for a pixar movie. no, this would probably take several minutes (perhaps 10), and would have ultimately depricated the shrek 3 cinematic experience

she merely looked at the book

she saw it, perhaps in the childrens section of a barnes & noble, registered it in her mind as being in existance, and filed it away for later as the subject for a post on BOOKS YOUVE READ. only she just looked at it. and it was shrek 3

in a way its the saddest post ive ever read

Well, I love every single THOH, but this came out as very special

The Shinning: I didn't really like this story (Willie did nothing but getting killed), but I loved the humors. ("Daviiiid Letterman!!!")

The second story was my favorite one. Great plot in short period. Especially when Homer ran away in his own 'heaven' just because the family didn't know what is donut

I also liked the third story ('Uterfest', lol), it's just plain disgusting to eat human, but the plot was just likable.

    5/5 for sure.
Why? Homer goes Stanley Kubrick crazy, a hat trick of axes in Willie's back, James Earl Jones as Maggie, hilariously crazy inside-out ending, and Flanders as the unquestioned lord of the universe.

I liked the first 2, the last one was way too disgusting.

    Its an easy 5/5

For a few years the THOH episodes were amazing..
"Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."

5/5, the best Treehouse of Horror episode ever.
Kids, let me tell you about another so-called ``wicked'' guy. He had long hair and some wild ideas. He didn't always do what other people thought was right. And that man's name was...
I forget. But the point is... I forget that, too. Marge, you know what I'm talking about. He used to drive that blue car?

-- Homer's parable of the guy in the blue car, ``Homer the Heretic''

Principal Skinner: No Ralph this means you're failing English
Ralph: Me fail English? That's unpossible.

On one of the Treehouse of Horror commentary tracks, Al Jean laughed at Mirkin’s postulate that the Halloween shows should be scary as well as funny, but this one seems to prove Mirkin right. It’s the funniest to date.

Although some of the best horror directors decry the “horror-comedy” fad ushered in by self-parodies like “Scream” a couple years after this episode aired, Mirkin’s Halloween shows really seem to understand how to toe all the key lines here. There’s wry social commentary, absurd gagfest scenes, plenty of homage and even some intelligent derision of the source material. The finale is truly disgusting, but by the time you get there, it almost seems like a dig at the over-the-top violence of the preceding twenty-two minutes, and it’s hilarious. And for kids, there are some genuinely frightening sequences amid the “Bullwinkle” references and Charlie Callas impressions.

That’s the respect in which I think “Nightmare Cafeteria” stands out. The “Shining” parody splits our time between Homer and Bart; the Time-Toaster story is explicitly a Homer story, with the rest of the family functioning merely as props with occasional exposition. But the cannibal segment gives us one of the purest kid’s-perspective Halloween stories in “Simpsons” history, and it does an excellent job of amplifying the tension by systematically stripping away the kids’ layers of normalcy and protection.

While I think Marge’s abdication of responsibility is the best joke in this episode, dodge though it may be, I agree with those who say that “Nightmare Cafeteria” is not as funny as either of the previous two segments, largely because we don’t get any Homer. In terms of effective scares, though, it’s second only to the gremlin story from the previous Halloween show. Both segments truly unfold like nightmares.

Mirkin even worked in a structure joke! He should have been kept in charge of the Halloween show every year.
