I like the fact the dog's condition was ignored throughout the whole of the first act. Then the gradual build up of plot progession was settled nicely - the ending is very prominent for me as well, so this episode gets a 4/5.

The season 3 run from early in the first half to the end was quite impressive and this episode is no exception. A lot of these are underacknowledged episodes that have a lot going for them. 5/5

all hail king homer
Easily the top SLH episode. It had been a long time since I last viewed this one and I feel I completely forgotten about it The episode is filled with satire(the lottery) along with emotional depth and great gags. Probably the best Clockwork Orange parody in the series. Severly underrated I'd even say one of season 3's best A-

I really like it. Good plot, and I think it's funny. 5/5
I don't know why people don't like this one because it is one of my all time favorites
yes, same. a lot of people cite homer at the bat as the best of the 'gag centric' episodes. i choose this one. also, it has less jose canseco which is always a good thing.
yeah I too think this is easily the best SLH episode, which are usually lackluster. It's very very funny (you can tell it's a Swartzwelder script), has some nice emotional moments and the plot moves along rather well, with some bits being more interesting than others. Regarding the "it's too dark" complaint, there have been much more depressing episodes than this, and to be honest this wasn't depressing really at all, as SLH was healed half way through. I don't think it's perfect but I'd still call it underrated and overlooked. A-
This is indeed the best LST episode, there is a good part with the music of Prokofiev, and the beginning with the lottery is excellent.

This is how I feel about it (although I'd give it an A). The dog's illness is resolved fairly quickly (and really, I don't see any tension there, anyway -- did anyone watch that expecting SLH to die?), and while watching SLH get turned into a psychotic killer could've been disturbing, this is one of those episodes where the material was handled well enough to avoid creeping the audience out (unlike, say, the death of Homer's mother). I also didn't mind SlH's reversion back to a "good dog" being so rapid. Bart's love for SLH saving the dog might have been somewhat schmaltzy, but it was a good ending. Remember: This is back in the days when the writers cared about wrapping things up well. In later seasons, how poorly things were resolved became almost an inside joke with the viewer (except that the viewers weren't laughing).
Quite enjoyable but not quite up to Season 3's remarkably high standards. Whilst it was entertaining and funny to see Mr Burns turn Santa's Little Helper into a vicious animal, the plot wasn't the greatest. Fun tho. 4/5 & 8/10
I've not seen this in a while, but its definitely one of my all time fav's.
