Rate and Review: Thirty Minutes over Tokyo

The first act and the first half of the second act were pretty bad, but it picked up towards the end. B-

Not a great episode. The Japanese part of the episode was pretty good, but the ending was kind of dumb. C

The fact that on their return trip to the states the plane the family is traveling on is experiencing turbulence due to an attack by Rhodan & Gamora makes this episode a classic. It pokes gentle fun at a lot of Japanese cultural cliches like the square watermelon, which someone already mentioned and their love of extreme game shows. And the scene when Bart & Homer are in jail and end up doing a "stupid Kabuki play" is awesome. A.

An odd episode and a fairly poor series closer. 30 minutes over Tokyo did have its moments I guess - Homer and Bart suddenly insulting Marge and Lisa in Japanese and also the epilepsy spoof, Homer overtaking the Flanders and America-town. However, for every good moment there was an equally crappy moment - while I found Homer's dumping of the emperor into a box a little funny (and insulting), the ending (game-show) was stupid, xenophobic and fairly devoid of laughs. And don't get me started on the Godzilla-like monsters. So very Mike Scully to put something like that in. The beginning was also pretty poor. For all of that, it was still watchable. So I'll give it a flat C. Very inconsistent.

I find this to be one of my favorite episodes, even though it's still a gagfest. Just saw it again in Syndication last week and my opinion still stand (only seen it twice now) Going for it and not backing down off my opinion A

90% Unfunny. Most of the jokes came from easily done stereotyping, although the Barney dressed up as Homer saying, 'That boy ain't right' always kills me.

I don't get that. The gags are unintelligent almost the whole way through, and there are some big groaners in there. Here's a horrible example of jerkass Homer: "Homer you could just slide the doors open" / "I don't have time for that". And the very ending with Godzilla is about on par with Robot Chicken. There are about three chucke-worthy moments though. D

Nope; it had been used several times before, the first of which I think was the gold tooth getting stolen in 'Last Exit to Springfield'.

Agreed there's a number of failed jokes, and it's definitely more cartoony and simple than almost any classic-era episode, but I find a fair mount of enjoyable stuff here. The cyber-cafe scenes, Barney stealing Homer's tab, America-town and other jokes about Japanese being influenced by America, Flanders/Homer interaction, Simpsons money problems, Japanese game shows, Japanese toilets, all made me laugh or at least kept me interested. I usually enjoy any episode that points out and has fun with the quirks of some outside culture, as long as it's not too harsh and obvious (like, say, Simpsons Safari).

    However, I do dislike:
    - Godzilla ending
    - the seizure robots (too easy a target and too zany)
    - the Hello Kitty factory
    - penny in the hand
    - Homer being a jerkass in the sumo wrestling ring

    What Mike Scully said.
she didnt exactly read shrek the 3rd, which apparently exists as some sort of companion book for a pixar movie. no, this would probably take several minutes (perhaps 10), and would have ultimately depricated the shrek 3 cinematic experience

she merely looked at the book

she saw it, perhaps in the childrens section of a barnes & noble, registered it in her mind as being in existance, and filed it away for later as the subject for a post on BOOKS YOUVE READ. only she just looked at it. and it was shrek 3

in a way its the saddest post ive ever read

i liked it. It's a good plot and idea and the Japanese game show is good as. A-
The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea.
They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall
mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by
small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is
clear: To build and maintain those robots. Thank you.

D - only reedeeming qualities were the cartoon-induced seizures and the fact that it was better than Saddlesore Galactica.

this used to be one of my favorites, can't say why now, after watching it again I just find it average. Lots of crazyness and cliche jokes, yay! It had some good bits (super seizure robots, waiting in the airport) but overall a C-.
