Rate and Review: Goodnight Simpsons (Tracey Ullman short)

What did you think of the first ever appearence of The Simpsons on television?

When I first saw it on "The 138th Episode Spectacular," I thought it was alright and I thought it came from Season 1 or something. It wasn't that great though. I did get a laugh out of Homer's crude-looking laugh and the "rock-a-bye baby" rhyme with Maggie part.

    2/5

(I'm interested to see how people review the shorts.)

It's like seeing Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie. It's not the greatest thing, but you enjoy it, because you're seeing your favorite cartoon in its infancy.

Meh. The highlight is Maggie falling from the tree. It's an ok story, but of the shorts i've seen (hardly any), Bathtime would be my pick.

I love how Maggie falls and falls and falls. Sure, it's primitive, but it's funny and it shows the family attempting to bond in a normal family manner which has since been abandoned.

Interesting ways of making the kids wig out beforew they go to bed, but everything else pretty much sux. I just glad it got better from there.

Did Maggie say her first words here?

That was a nice way to put it, Semaj. I've gotta say that I agree with you.

Animation is awful, voices are all wrong and there isn't much of a plot, is there? 2/5

Eh, I liked it for what it was. Pretty cute and funny way of introducing the family, and Bart and Maggie's eyes in the dark made me laugh out loud (Bart's get extremely confused, Maggie's poke out and start wiggling oddly).

    4/5 for a short.

As introductory episodes go, I feel it was pretty decent - 99.28% of everything is difficult to execute first time around ('practice makes perfect'), therefore my expectations weren't particularly high. These days, it serves better as something to get all gooey-eyed and nostalgic over rather than to be entertained by, and it's also interesting to compare character's roles with how they seem today - Bart is shown to be a deep thinker, Homer is shown to be a responsible adult - it goes to show you how much characters evolve through time. 4/5.

4/5. It wasn't all that funny, but it had it's moments, and IMO, it was a great way to start of the series.

The only part that makes me laugh is what TriforceBun points out -- Maggie's eyeballs (for no discernable reason) goes bonkers. But what it lacks in humor, it makes up for in historical interest. 3/5.

    R&R Goodnight

Since we are doing R&R threads for shorts now, i wanted to make one for the very first short, this is a pretty good short and overall a nice start to The Simpsons. 4/5

I guess it's okay. Feels odd to watch both this, and a modern episode. Also Marge's voice is slightly off. (So's Homer's, obviously.) But it's sweet enough, and is better than something like "Moms I'd Like To Forget". Cute animation, too. 3/5

Great start to the series. Loved Homer's "What is mind? no matter" line and Maggie's imagination. Rock-a-bye Baby always was kind of a creepy rhyme.

I really enjoy the shorts and I think they're under-appreciated but I don't like this short. It just feels really lame and not-that-funny and rather timid. I think some of it is lost to context: maybe it was mildly mindblowing to be watching a 1980s sketch show and suddenly seeing some really grotesque yellow cartoon people? I don't know. I guess the idea of the story is that childhood innocence and tradition (bedbugs and lullaby) is being questioned and destroyed? I suppose that's not bad for a first short.

Homer and Bart are the only ones with any semblance of personality that would make me want to tune in to them again, and they're the ones who drive the show to this day. I think the women got kind of a short shrift here. I noticed Bart has a framed picture of a football, which indicates to me that Bart's character wasn't exactly planned out that much ("oh, he's a boy, so he likes football, so let's give him a football picture"). This is what intrigues me about the really early shorts, the fact that the characters mostly exist as a sort of primordial ooze and have yet to form a concrete identity at this stage. The characters could have gone in any sort of direction and it's interesting to speculate what might have been (i.e. what if Bart was more of a jock, or an egghead? What if Lisa was more of a brat?).

There's some aspects I find interesting: You can definitely feel the 4-panel rhythm of a comic strip, maybe it will be interesting to see a comic strip guy slowly evolve his writing patterns. I like the eyeballs in the dark gags which have an experimental "student film-y" vibe to them. The animation of Maggie's crib falling feels surprisingly confident for an otherwise timidly-animated short. Also I like the probably-unintentional symmetry of the first short ending with the end of the Simpsons' day while the would-be first episode starts at breakfast.

It was charming, had great funny-ugly animation and loved the ending with everyone having to share one bed.
For the prelude to the show, this was pretty good. 8/10

Well, this is where the show started so obviously it gets points for that. The quality isn't exactly great, even for the shorts, although It did make me laugh a lot. 3/5
