This is one of my favourites from Season 10 to Season 18. I liked the three (or was it four?) stories. The plot was funny and good. And as Ivan said, everything fell together at the end. Not much of a review but it gets A+ for sure.
5/5 - "Dad, what's the point of this story?" "I like stories."
4/5 - "Oh, I know this story! The year was nineteen-ought-six. The President is the divine Miss Sarah Bernhardt. And all over America, people were doin' a dance called the "Funky Grandpa!"
3/5 - "Anyway, the moral is, the lion was so happy, he gave Hercules this big... thing... of riches."
2/5 - "I wonder why stories of degradation and humiliation make you more popular?" "I dunno. They just do."
1/5 - "Great story, Grandpa. Could have used a vampire, though."

5/5 Great Episode- Shame I had to wait to watch it on Sky One.

A return to Golden Age quality for the Simpsons. 5/5!

I've been meaning to review this episode for awhile so...
Well, this was pretty nice for Season 17, and there were little bits of delicious humor frisson distributed throughout. Most of Burns' dialouge (He was well-written for a change!), Moe trying to get the drunks out of the tavern, and the Mexican standoff were hilights for me. The plot was solid enough, and I loved the running gag with the interlocking stories.
There were a few things that bugged me in this ep, though. They were all little things:
1)Another anatomy gag involving Burnsie...Christ, make it stop! (*cough* petty nitpicking from me *cough*)
2) Some of the jokes were stretched a bit too far, when they weren't even that funny to begin with. The nickel in the bottle and the 1-2-3-4 thing with the Rich Texan come immediately to mind.
3) Frankly,I found the anthromorphopized sheep telling its story, and the joke about Snake being a former Indiana Jones type to be really, really dumb. It did help Snake's appearance towards the end make sense though.
The above, while annoying, did not ruin the episode entirely for once, though, which is surprising. I actually enjoyed it.
Verdict: 3.5/5. Flawed yet strangely compelling
Great fun from start to finish! Liberal midgets & Wild beast, Burns & Moe, a neurotic Texan ..1,2,3,4, I put Snakes archeology career in the closet with Skinners real identity, just better off forgotten about (under penalty of torture). Laughed myself silly when the mountain ram told its story
... I give it a 5/5
Brilliant! Great gags, and worked out perfectly. A bit like Trilogy of Error. A

Very good episode , best of seson 17 i think. Great plot , great jokes , good animation, it hits almost 22 short films about springfield
4/5. This one had a really good story and structure. the jokes were funny 2. i just felt as though it went on for a long time (hence the title) but still a gr8 episode. A-
I finally saw this all the way through tonight. Damn good episode, I liked all the storys having another story inside it. It all worked really well, A.
One of the truly great post-classic era offerings. I loved the concept and execution of the stories within stories, and there were many brilliant jokes throughout. Most of the characterizations were spot-on as well, except for maybe Burns, who seemed slightly out of character but thankfully not too much. I loved seeing the young Edna and her relationship with Moe. Even the Rich Texan was very funny and enjoyable, while he usually is irritating. 4.5/5
^ You watched it.![]()
"Evolution is silly," AJ adds. "Monkeys? Um, no."
a really good episode and one of the best from season 17 imo.
The idea for the episode is entertaining and funny.
Also great to see Moe with a bigger role in this episode.
Have not seen it in ages but while watching I remember thinking it was one of the best they had done for years. I keep hoping this one will pop up on sky one soon. 5/5
The first time I saw this episode I missed the first few minutes. I watched the full episode for the first time yesterday and think it's an instant classic. My head kind of hurts thinking about the story within a story within a story concept but it was very entertaining. It was great how there were well developed characters
featured (Moe, Burns and to a lesser extent Edna) and 2 background recurring characters (Snake and rich Texan) as well.
I normally don't like the rich Texan very much but he seemed pretty funny although the 1 2 3 4 gag was used one too many times. OFF may have not been the focus of the episode but their impact on the stories was well written. Homer's line
about the cappucino machine seemed like typical Homer at first, but since he already knew about the treasure, I wouldn't expect him to be surprised when being told the story. The Barney gag had me in stitches the first time I saw it. Snake's revenge line nicely explained his 'career change'.
The ending with Skinner and Bart was unexpected but seemed appropriate.
5/5 A+
"I need an operation?"
"That's a story for another day."
I disliked Snakes background, but overall very creative.
3/5 A-
I'm formal. But I'm here to party.
the script of maxtone-graham is a bit complex, but I think it's a partially wasted idea. The problem I see in the ep' is that: every story is less interesting than the previous. Structurally is very ambitious. The formal twist is more spectacular than the plot itself. By the way, there are some good jokes and a couple of these are very subtle.
...the ending is very clumsy.
this idea might have been a masterpiece in the golden era
Overall: B or 62/100

One of the best from the season. I think it's much better than 22 Films, which I find incredibly overrated and a lot less creative. The only thing that wasn't explained was how everyone got out of the cave, but I can overlook that problem. 5/5!
You can do anything if you put your mind to it.
Everything happens for a reason.
Just be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.
Don't worry about the world ending today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

haha, i remember going to this thread the night this episode aired. i should have gotten an account then.
anywho, this episode was the best of the season. after seeing the promo card on simpsons channel the week before airtime in 2006, i knew the episode would be interesting. and boy, was it. the story in a story plot wasn't too confusing, and most jokes worked.
favorite line: "pshh, our god made their god!"
anyone remember why this got a tv-14 rating? maybe burns' utter of "bitch"? it's been said before, but that's not as much to get that rating.

an episode i somewhat had low expectations for turned out to be a very good and funny episode. lost my attention, but it was still great
This has to be the most original and interesting idea this show has offered since Behind the laughter and Trilogy of error. It flowed magnificently, keeping the viewer intrigued all the way through, but the pacing is still incredibly fast, which makes it even more exciting.
I have to say that Burns and Moe shined in this episode. As for Burns, I have to say that I missed mocking at his age. That’s why I really laughed at him saying his birthplace is Pangea, and the joke with Burns spending time with his relatives was hilarious. Moe was great here as well, finally not being a depressed person that tries to commit suicide.
Some of my favorite moments in this episode also include Barney mysterously getting back into the bar, Rich Texan shooting Burns in the mirror, and Snake being an archeologist. I didn’t like the joke with Homer’s toupee, and I was also bothered by Homer saying Bart needs an operation.
The ending was weird. How did all the former gold owners know they should come into the cave for the final standoff? Although the ending disturbed me, it was still quite funny, especially because of Snake’s son, and Moe pretending he has a gun.

Marmalade,I love marmalade...
Interesting to see the poll. I guess that's why it topped the Best of 11-20. It's much closer to the bottom for me. Meant to say 2/5 but I accidentally said 1/5. That being said, I don't think it's any better than the former. It certainly had an interesting idea like Trilogy of Error, but unlike that episode I didn't find this very funny at all and cringeworthy in certain spots. I don't want to discourage the creativity they attempted with this one, but personally I'll call this episode largely overrated.
Excellent episode, but I've noticed a plot hole. If Bart was telling the stroy, how did he know what happened when Lisa started telling Homer the story? He was with Marge out of the scene.
It's still off at times, but it is the best episode of Season 17, which really says more about the season than anything else.
C+

Wow! I'm embarrassed to say that I had never seen this episode until just a few minutes ago. Although when this originally aired, I was kind of out of the loop for new Simpson episodes.
Very creative episode that was entertaining all the way through, which is more than I can say about a good number of newer episodes. This episode truly felt like lost classic era episode. Good jokes here and there, some were lame, but overall they were good. Interesting to see the background on Edna and Snake. The weakest story was Lisa being chased by the bighorn sheep, but it doesn't drag the episode down really. I think I enjoyed Burn's story the most out of them all. As I mentioned, very original and creative! Fantastic episode!
Overall Rating: 4/5
...Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've noticed that these threads get bumped all the time without negative repercussions, which there shouldn't be anyways; I don't see anything wrong with bumping old threads, some forums make a big deal about it.

Really enjoyed this one and with a good Al Jean ending for once.
3.5/5 rounded to a 4 for the poll.
Pretty fun episode to watch. Very interesting way of telling the story. The only thing that doesn't really make sense is that Burns and the Rich Texan were just lurking somewhere in the shadows the whole time the story was being told. Still, 4/5
