Girly Edition: Do you like it or hate it?

This is an interesting episode of season 9 that has quite a lot going on for it: it has satire on media sensationalism, it boasts of a sibling rivalry between Bart and Lisa and it has a helper monkey subplot with Homer.

Personally, this episode is kind of a mixed bag for me. On one hand, the satire on sappy manipulative reporting is sharp and spot-on and makes for some great Kent Brockman and Bart reporting scense. While Homer is in his "Capain wacky" state of characterisation with his lazyness exaggarated to extreme for laughs, the monkey subplot has some fairly amusing scenes.

The biggest issue for me comes from the sibling rivalry. The way the conflict is built up is kind off contrived and not very well-writte. I interpret that the episode wants us to be sympathetic to lisa because her honesty is being outshined by Bart's manipulative tripe but unfortunately I don't feel either for her or Bart. Both of them come off as being malicious to each other for no concrete reason with Bart being irritating at the first few scenes ("silence octopussy!") and Lisa's jealousy feeling underdeveloped and a tad unrealistic when compared to, say Bart's anger at her in Lisa On Ice or My Sister, My Sitter.

Even though it has characterization issues, decent humour and satire make it a decent episode, and puts it on the better half of season 9. If i were to grade it, it would be a B- probably.

So do you like this episode or do you hate it?

I've only seen it once but I think it's really actually good. It characterizes Bart and Lisa well, as I think you said. It also gives us a look, once again, at their competitive side, and we see how they're like a lot of brothers and sisters when they're in a conflict. I think most of season nine was brilliant...and this episode is really good, also.

It's very good. A very fun episode, even if the subplot is a bit wacky. It has one of my fav jokes as well where Lisa reports on trains hardly being used here, and then a train goes past. I can't comment too much, as I havn't seen it in a while.

This is the ultimate forgettable episode. I remember not being able to think if it was real or I just dreamed it a while ago. This is an extremely average episode in the middle of an extremely average season.

Some people wouldn't even consider Season 9 to be the best outside the classic era. Many consider 13, 14 or 15 to be better.

Great episode, with two great storylines, but the main bit that makes it great is the apperance of Mojo the monkey.

The sub-plot between him and Homer is hilarious!

I taped this episode off the TV once, and decided to "translate" what Mojo was saying, to make it more interesting. Everyone thought I was odd!

I consider 13 better. And I'm not sure how anyone can like 15 and 16 better. Those people are probably these people:

I misremembered what Channel Surfer was saying about some Jean seasons being better than Season 9, so I've corrected my above post. But I'm pretty sure quite a few consider 15 and 16 to be better, if anything they are the most consistent Jean seasons.

Season 9 and all of the Jean seasons are extremely interchangeable in quality: it gets very difficult to rank them qualitatively. It is the season in which all characters declined and became one-dimensional (Bart in Bart Carny, Homer in many episodes, Lisa in Lisa The Skeptic) , sitcommish and Captain wacky plots became prevalent (Two Mrs. Nahaseemapetiolns,Bart Star) and frankly it has its fair share of bland boring lifeless episodes as much as the Jean seasons has (Dumbbell Indemnity, Reality Bites,The Principal and The Pauper). It has good episodes (Lisa's sax, The Cartrdige Family, Natural Born Kissers, Lost our Lisa, Lisa The Simpson) but so does every season of the Jean Era (except for season 17 so far). One thing season 9 can boast off is better gag-execution than all of the Jean seasons which is I think is the main reason it is generally regarded as being better than the Jean seasons.

BTW, stop getting off-topic people, review the episode.

I think Girly Edition was a decent episode. I liked the competition between Bart and Lisa.

Season 9 does not average out that high above the Jean era, but I think it has far more standout episodes.

I give it a B. The main plot wasn't very funny. Doesn't this episode have the first appearance of the Crazy Cat Lady though?
