I don't dislike this episode (actually I don't dislike the episode, but whatever) because Homer runs away, not even because he is selfish, what I hate is that this jerkiness is overdone to the point of trying to make laugh at one situation that I find sadistic and disgusting, that is, playing with the idea that Abe may die, showing him almost crying in front of a senseless Homer and all of that just for the sake of having Homer portrayed as the "funny jerk". This episode basically kills any trace of a hearfelt, emotional or at least realistic look at their relationship. And the problem is that Abe is not Hans Moleman, we are not used to laugh at his hilariously sadistic disgraces, it's like making a whole episode based on seeing Lisa getting hurt again and again, it ignores the point of the character and the sort of attachment it has with the audience, and just because "it's funny". In the same way, Homer is an asshole and can be a likeable asshole, but when things are so overdone and have these serious consequences, I find it hard to not want to punch him in his face.

I see your point and I respect it but it's just that I can't handle how the series, which was basically and strongly character-driven, was changed in the Scully era, and specially in episodes like this, to a sort of "anything goes" in which their portrayals and interaction were constantly messed up for the sake of the joke.

That's the best critique of Mike Scully's showrunning I've ever read on this site. I don't let bad characterization disrupt MY enjoyment of any episode, but I can see how it could bother others.

This is one of the most deplorable, awful, inexcusable pieces of shit ever to grace the television screens. This shit's worse than any episode of Spongebob from seasons 4 and 5 and it's fucking hectic, full of shit that flies all over the place with no real resolution. Homer is truly an asshole in here. I truly wished he would've died when the car hit him. Screw Homer. Screw John Swartzwelder. Screw Flanders.
