s4 is a great season, but I'd rather it stay longer than that. If they ended right around s8/9 (and added a series finale, not a regular episode), I would've liked that

I'm actually glad it stayed around.

Despite the decline, I've still thoroughly enjoyed the episodes/waiting for an episode/speculating an episode and despite the fact that season 20 (my worst season) was an absolute abomination - I am still watching it for enjoyment, rather than being a completist.

I consider season 4 to be about the absolute peak of the Simpsons, but ending it there would mean you miss out on four more great seasons plus some other worthy leftovers. I'd say season 9 if they were able to use any of the previous showrunners to run it.

Though I'm sure there are perks to it having well overstayed its welcome. I at least still thought the show was passable in 2004 (and of course, an improvement upon around the seasons made around the millenium).

I'd say Season 15 with a good final episode would have been a good ending. I still get quite a lot of enjoyment out of episode to that point even if they aren't classic era quality. Season 16 is imo the worst season so ending before that would have been good and we would have still got the perks of longevity without it just seeming too tired.

I see your point Diversity Pumpkin. It actually would have worked well as a final season.

Although I would have liked to see The Simpsons overstay their welcome than end very early.

If they didn't end with s8/9, another idea would be one of the milestone episodes, such as the 400th episode at the end of the 18th season (but of course, make the episode seem more "series finale-y").

I say that The Simpsons should end on their 500th episode; it would be a big milestone: halfway to 1,000.

i think the final season should:

maybe being back one-time characters (MAYBE)
older people should return (such as John Swartzwelder)
it should be 13 episodes (to tie in with the very first season having 13 episodes)
    tie up any loose ends

I've said this numerous times but I think at the end of whatever the final episode ever is (which should be amazing by the way otherwise I'll bring it back (somehow) just to end it properly) the episode should end with the family sitting in-front of the TV and Matt Groening (in cartoon form) should walk past outside, stop and look at the family through the window for a second, chuckle to himself and then walk onwards down the street into the sunset with 'Close to you - The carpenters' playing. That'd be a sweet ending. But I'm guessing they'll end it with Homer hitting his head.

their time has passed (Swartzwelder stopped coming to the writers' room when they banned smoking after all)

they've gone their seperate ways - Oakley and Weinstein are on the Cleveland Show or something now (?)

and ultimately it just won't be good.

Although, I definitely do want some veteran writers to come in for the series finale, to make it even more extra special.

    Anyway...New Topic.

IGN have released their annual bullshit review of the Simpsons and let's say it's blatantly obvious that Murdoch and IGN are passing money around.

    Source

20 years of anything would get a little stale after a while, and that's a complaint that has been railed against the series for a number of years now. But last year, after the series' switch to hi-def, The Simpsons seemed reenergized. Season 21 continued to move the series in an upward trajectory, perhaps with its anniversary celebration reigniting some passion and creativity.

While I agree with most of their points in the review (Devil Wears Nada as a lowlight, that the HD switch had anything to do with the show going on an upswing), I honestly agree with their main analysis--the show isn't as great as it used to be, but is still entertaining and enjoyable

When looking back at season 20, I actually thought the show got worse after the HD switch, amd if you extend it to 19 and 21 that notion gets even more pronounced IMO. It's all opinions I guess, but I don't get it.

Well, I personally believe that the second half of Season 20 (post-HD switch) was the better half. However, that belief has NOTHING TO DO with the fact that it's in the bright, shiny HD animation. What people seem to forget is that the HD switch also ushered in a new production code (LABF), and, HD or no HD, the LABF line seemed to bring in...i don't know how to say it, renewed vigor, I guess, to the writing--overall, I thought the plots became more interesting and fun, and most of the jokes were funnier. Now, of course it's obviously not classic era, and I sincerely doubt it will ever be again (I doubt any TV show will quite reach classic era level--yes, I'm aware that other shows are great, but none I've seen quite reach that golden pinnacle of 2-9), but it's perfectly enjoyable entertainment in its own right that I'm not embarrassed to say I enjoy

Fair enough. I know you're not the only one who thought the new production line helped the show's cause (at least for that season anyways), so maybe I'm just crazy. I've never thought the ideas for episodes were that much of a problem most of the time, but when it comes to the humour and the characters something just feels really missing, even when only compared to earlier seasons run by Jean. I tend to think this was improved slightly in MABF, but then issues with pacing, general storytelling, and a few outright regrettable episodes came into play. I suppose it'll be interesting to see how these episodes fare in a few years.
