Pretty fun episode. I like the Lisa/Homer story, The first act was actually the best. But as many other episode in season 17/16 it isnt that good. I also liked the idea of Bart steal a sign with his name on it.

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. I laughed a few times, but there were some serious issues, such as the townspeople suddenly wanting Mayor Quimby out just plain out of nowhere. There was no buildup or anything. I did laugh at a few scenes with the Safety Salamander, but the crazy cat lady is seriously getting on my nerves at this point. 3/5...

It was a Decent episode the 3rd act really let this episode down IMO.

Hmmm....this is an interesting one. Quite a few of the jokes have a certain subtle quality to them not seen on the show in years. However, very few of these jokes were actually any good to begin with. The plot is kind of interesting, seeing everyone in Springfield running for the Mayor's office, but it isn't really executed terribly well.

    3/5.

Wow.... now I remember why I didn't like S17. Sure, it's only one episode, but the plot turns with different subjects coming up in about like, 4 minutes, the silliness that I had not really expected and... anyway, it's very weird episode, very Family-Guy-esque. I do like wackiness/zanyness, but this episode just doesn't work for Simpsons level... (FG would've had funnier gags along with some cutaway scenes to go along with it anyways) ... Simpsons Comics did much better job on Homer-runs-for-mayor story. D+

i think this episode is actually really good, no real downside for me.
My favorite gag is the one with Homer as Safety Salamander. Hilarious scenes imo

A solid episode with a good plot, some great humor, great characterization, and a nice ending. 4/5

    Everything happens for a reason.

Don't worry about the world ending today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

Actually I can't say I've ever seen this one. I don't have high expectations given it pretty much fits in with the rest of the season for most, but I'll reserve judgment.

A definition of average Jean era episode. A tolerable storyline, some quality comedy, but nothing too memorable or new. It started pretty good, but turned out to be just another typical Homer gets a new job story.

The first couple of minutes and the Father’s day story probably brought this episode up for a whole grade. Plenty of funny moments, such as Bart’s gift to Homer, and Homer’s fantasy was classic as well. However, it went downhill from the moment Lisa went berzerk, which was a bit too much.

Homer’s obsession with winning Lisa back reminded me of Lisa’s pony, but this time the solution wasn’t that clever. I liked Homer saving the people from the car crash, but the whole running for the mayor plot felt recycled and already seen. I must say that it bothered me to hear the real name of crazy cat lady, just like I hated to hear comic book guy’s real name in previous season. It just spoils their obscurity in my opinion.

The ending was fine, and it’s always nice to see Homer and Lisa getting along. The episode hat its moments, but overall it wasn’t too interesting.

    C+

Bland, amusing (mostly the salamander scenes) and with a surprisingly touching end. Just very boring around the end of act 2 and start of act 3 place.

    Not very good tbh...

    See Homer Run

Homer and Lisa episodes come in the numerous dozens and while a lot of them are good, a lot of them can also be bad. This one falls into the latter. Let's just say that while seeing Homer run is a good potential episode idea, the number of slapdash ideas added to it just severly weaken the premise.

For one, alot of the characters don't feel like themselves. Homer in particular comes across as Jerkass Homer, barely showing any emotion unless the episode calls for it. I get that he's supposed to be stupid but in an episode like this, it's just inexcusable. They make it very clear that Homer does not care for Lisa at all until he gets into that Safety Salamander costume, then her worth for Lisa suddenly increases... An example of this has to be when Homer takes Lisa to a theater and then lies to her to get "Baby" tickets. Both Homer and Lisa seem to be out of character, the delivery between them seems forced and awkward like they wanted to move the plot along to a place where they wanted it to be. Homer does get a little bit better near the end but he still feels out of place in this episode. This also applies to some of the stuff Lisa does, save for her emotional breakdown and moments at school...

Of course, the other characters seemed to be played well; even though their relegated to background roles. I do say that Skinner, Moe, Ralph, The Bullies and Clancy played their roles the best ways they can. There do seem to be some good jokes though, I did particularly enjoy Homer's thought bubble and some of the stuff he did as the salamander. Mostly everything else seems to be a miss, like the writers are trying too hard to fit in a "Homer runs for office" plot, a "Homer & Lisa" plot, and a "Springfield" plot all in one and it comes up as a jumbled mess. The car crash felt confused in it's execution and much of the political humor came up as weak and contrived (saved for the negative ad.)

The plot also moves at a confusing place; like episodes before it, there could of been some scenes trimmed or moved around a little bit. In the circumstance of this, there are like 10x more scenes of this variety. The Homer and Lisa plot could of had less time and it could of gotten it's point across more efficiently and effectively, it would also leave room for the Homer runs for office plot, which was apparently running out of air and needed room to breathe, if that plot had been expanded then it could expand the Homer/Lisa dynamic while also giving us a better plot involving Homer and Lisa (due to the additional time.) It would of also given more sense to the political humor which just seems as quick as the gags that came before it. At least the way they ended it was nice, ended it in a better way then it deserved.

In closing, this was disappointingly bad. I wouldn't say it's the worst of Season 17 but the scully-esce humor does nothing to help me quell my fears, and those fears are clearly evident on an episode like this; there is nothing worth seeing or remembering on here. On a side note, I don't understand why they keep building the cat lady up as a character, I mean what's so special about her anyway? Can somebody answer that for me???

Season 17 continues when Homer becomes the Safety Salamander!!!! This occurs because his little girl Lisa becomes disillusioned with her most important male authority figure: him. To try and win back her admiration he dons the salamander and proceeds to save numerous lives. He becomes so popular in costume he even decides to run for mayor, but the costume becomes worn out. When it inevitably becomes unwearable Homer's popularity leaves him, well....except for with his daughter, where it matters the most.

We just had a Marge/Bart episode and now we move on to Homer and Lisa. I normally really enjoy Homer and Lisa plots, and this is not an exception, but I do think this couldn't quite match the Bart/Marge plot we just had. I really love the Father's Day setup for the first act, and I remember it well. The thing is I didn't recall that it was in this episode though, so when I saw that it was I was pleased. I always felt bad for Homer in this first act. He isn't really doing anything wrong here. I mean yes he probably could've used more tact when dealing with Lisa's self-made present, but this is Homer we're talking about. He doesn't really do anything wrong here(which I know I just said) but still inadvertently manages to leave his little girl feeling crushed. This is in contrast to The Dad Who Knew Too Little. Whereas the conflict in that episode is because of Homer's ineptitude/not knowing anything about his daughter, this is almost entirely a chance occurrence. That the scenes leave me feeling bad for both Homer and Lisa is a definite plus for the episode.

Then we move on to Lisa at school and what starts out as her being understandably upset turns into just watching her be a brat. Lisa's self-defense, "only men can get mad" freak-out is one of my least favorite things here. It just doesn't feel like Lisa to me. Thankfully it doesn't go on for too long. We see Dr. Pryor in act 2. I believe this may have been the first time since Lisa's Sax though he's appeared in an HD episode or two since. Homer donning the Safety Salamander guise is a plot turn that should likely make or break the episode for you, but I enjoyed it. The thing I like is he's trying his best here, not being a jerk, and he even succeeds in rescuing people in a scene that is fun to watch. It is only made possible by a seemingly unnecessary earlier scene involving Bart and the bullies that I also enjoyed.

The biggest problem I have with this episode is the third act run for mayor. It isn't given much time and feels rushed. The Cat Lady scene is downright bad. Although we do get several funny political jokes such as Jimbo's ad and Wolfcastle's stand. Quimby hijacking the plane to wherever girls are going wild probably got the biggest laugh out of me on this viewing. The conclusion involving the salamander suit being destroyed is predictable but satisfactory. Ultimately I don't think this is a bad episode by any stretch. I always remember Homer as the Safety Salamander and the first 2 acts or so as highly enjoyable save a moment or two. It is certainly not as good as say The Dad Who Knew Too Little, or Homer and Lisa Exchange Cross Words. It isn't as good as the previous episode. Despite this I still enjoy it enough for a 3.5/5, rounded up on the poll.

PS: I liked the joke with the bullies stealing the Scream, but I think I remember reading somewhere that the actual copy that was stolen had been recovered recently. That's a joke/reference that is likely to be lost on current first time viewers.

Awesome. How can people not like this? It was funny, especially the Safety Salamander scenes, the plot was good and the ending was lovely. Why do people hate the ending? I bet if it was on a classic episode they'd love it... 5/5

I completely agree, this is fantastic and really underrated. The crash scene in particular was hilarious, and the ending was a sweet Homer and Lisa moment. The only downside I can think of is that damn Crazy Cat Lady! 9.5/10
