R&R American Dad - "Stan of Arabia" (Part 1)

I thought it was fantastic, probably the best episode of all the prime-time cartoons so far this season. Can't wait for part 2.

Now THIS is what American Dad is all about. :thumbsup

I liked pretty much everything about this episode. After the numerous false assumption concerning the Middle East, the Smiths finally get to go there, only to learn how things are really like there.

Many funny jokes, especially when Hayley and Steve went to see the Michael Moore documentary. I also liked the parts where Stan got a second wife, and when Hayley goes with her new boyfriend to Burger King.

I'm definitely looking forward to Part 2 next week.

Great episode coming from American Dad tonight, it was really the first A-Dad episode that could actually be on the same level The Simpsons, or Family Guy. The Michael Moore documentary bit was hillarious, and so was Roger running out of booze in Saudi Arabia. About the only thing I didn't like about the episode was the ending. However I really want to see how this episode ends next week. 4.5/5

What can I say that hasn't already been said? This was a great episode with a great storyline. Can't wait to see the conclusion next week.

It was okay, but I don't think it's as good as the rest of you seem to. 3/5

Yeah same here. 3.5/5. It had some lines that were a bit more stupid than funny. Not great, but still far from the worst episodes of the show.

Well-crafted, well thought out and it brought me to a realization:

Family Guy: hilarious by being wacky and insane
American Dad: hilarious by humorous story and satire

Very good contrast. Very, very good contrast in an hour...

I hate "to-be-continued" shows, but I haven't seen one in an animated show in years, probably since FG's two-parter...

This felt more like a classic era Simpsons than The Simpsons felt tonight.

This is what a well-written episode of an animated sitcom is like, and even though Family Guy is hilarious, it will never have an episode of this calibre.

It was okay, but I thought both the both Simpsons and (especially) Family Guy were funnier tonight.

I watched tonight's new episode, then the pilot on Adult Swim immediately following, and now I realize why ADad has gotten much better. In the beginning there were shades of it trying to be somewhat like Family Guy, with a couple cutaway scenes (the Iraq/IKEA scene and the Bush/God scenes come to mind). But now they've completely done away with the cutaways, in favor of a completely linear storyline. It's gotten a bit more down to earth too (well, as far down to earth as you can get with a talking alien and fish). The character development has gotten a lot better.

I'm glad I'm enjoying American Dad now instead of forcing myself to loathe it as I originally did. It's evolved into its own show, which can't really be compared to the other Seth production. Both FG and ADad, much like FG and Simpsons, are differently good in their own rights.

Really? I definately thought American Dad was way better than The Simpsons and Family Guy last night.

The THOH wasn't all that funny and Family Guy, although it had some funny parts, just didn't seem that good.

I'm shocked at how good this episode was. I don't think it was as good as other people here do, mainly due to the fact that I still don't care about the characters that much. B+

Like Family Guy I've decided to give this series another chance, and by God, I was amazed at how much the show has evolved since the beginning. Definitely the best episode so far. 5/5

This is where I disagree. I mean I know it's a two-parter, but all Roger did was keep looking for a drink the entire episode. That was completely useless to me. And Steve is still a horny teen. Yeah, I get it. They would be well served to focus on those charcters a bit more in the second one. That's what dragged it down for me. Still it was okay.

great episode(especially compared to that poor excuse for an FG) though i have to agree with oldcootabe that Roger and Steve were a bit more 2D than usual

Those calling Roger and Steve 2-D in this episode need to realize that the aim here was to even just come up with some kind of conflict for all the characters to wind up in at the end of the episode. Doing this for Stan, Hailey, Francine, Roger AND Steve in 21 minutes automatically requires that a couple of these little stories will end up being very simple, playing off the already established traits of the characters (since with that much going on there's no time to establish strong new scenarios and feelings for each character). I thought it was perfect.

um what? i downloaded this because of the ridiculously good reviews and because i had previously downloaded the masturbation episode (for the same reason) and found it to be not bad and a million times better than the first two episodes. but this was just back to the standard of the show in its infancy. shit on a stick. the actual premise is good (stan goes to saudi arabia and actually likes its misogynistic culture) but it was just painfully unfunny in the same obnoxious college-jock way that family guy is. the michael moore documentary "parody" was horrible; michael moore...suddenly has sex with who he's interviewing for no apparent reason. if that appeared on the simpsons people here would e-riot. and whereas in the masturbation episode they managed to give stan a kind of likeable unlikeableness here he's just an outraaaaageous, in-your-face one-note schtick character again. steve is as horribly one-note and irritating as he was in the pilot. at least that stupid fish only had two lines. the satire on saudi arabia was barely any less ignorant or limited as stan's preconceptions that they tried to make fun of. no doubt this show has improved a lot....but this is hardly a shining example

that is fair enough and i didn't see this as that much of a problem. I just thought it was noteworthy.

This episode was average for American Dad, I haven't really noticed an improvement or decline since it started. A few laughs as usually but nothing really memorable. Not as good as Family Guy but more enjoyable than the Simpsons.

yeah, like jafar i downloaded this hoping the show was as great as advertised and ... well, i also hated it. that cancer joke had to be a new low in animated sitcoms. i guess the show is definitely not for me ...

Well I thought it was decent but I've still seen better episodes of American Dad. Also, that's three times I've now seen a show where the male husband apparently has no idea that their wife is taking part in a theatre production - (when clearly they do) with "A Street Car Named Marge" and "The King Is Dead" but obviously this was just used to show the trouble between Francine and Stan and was quickly forgotten about.

A few good laughs and looking forward to Part 2. (4/5)

once again a very solid episode. the only aspect of the cliffhanger that interested me was stan declaring he is not going back to america ever, the other subplots didn't leave me hanging that much. loved the bits with jay leno ("he has come down with a broken neck") and all the scenes in saudi arabia were quite fun, the whole michael moore thing kinda fell flat though. the ending was very kick ass.

    B+
