Yeah this is a good one. The ending was sweet, and the whole joke with everybody appearing in the clouds makes me laugh every time. I also love Comic Book Guy's profound announcement of "THE ULTIMATE POG"

Amazingly underrated. It's one of the best for me - I especially love Lisa's rendition of Jazzman. Funny and heartfelt episode.

Not as good as some others say, but not as bad as others say either. It was pretty good, but not amazing. 4/5.
Favourite/least favourite by seasons that I own (somewhat stolen from Financial Panther):

    3 - Dog of Death/When Flanders Failed 4 - Lisa's First Word/So it's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show 5 - Secrets of a Successful Marriage/Bart's Inner Child 6 - And Maggie Makes Three/Another Simpsons Clip Show 7 - Marge Be Not Proud/Bart the Fink 8 - Homer's Phobia/The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase 9 - King of the Hill/Trash of the Titans 10 - Wild Barts Can't Be Broken/Maximum Homerdrive

This episode is just alright with me. First of all, I think it was a poor choice of episode to have a sequel for. While overall, I prefer this episode to Moaning Lisa, it really isn't saying much and the idea of a sequel to it is a little underwhelming. I thought the emotion in this episode was rather forced as Lisa hasn't seen BGM for awhile and we weren't really given much time to be reintroduced to him. There were also a numerous amount of cheap plot moments, like Lisa being the only one to believe Bart (go figure) and Bart buying the record for Lisa, which was so predictable. Having said that, the episode wasn't that bad. The humor was good. The Homer/hot dog running gag as well as Homer's failed attempt to comfort Lisa were memmorable moments that stuck out in a good way. Also, Lisa's imagination at the end, while a little cliche, was pretty nice, even though I didn't really like the song. 3/5

You can do anything if you put your mind to it.

    Everything happens for a reason.

Just be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.

Don't worry about the world ending today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

I really didn't care for this episode in the slightest. First, I had the most overused and cliched character, Lisa, in the spotlight. R.S. dealt with her whiny 8yr old fawning over some washed up jazz musician that no one gave two shits about who--of course--dies. Between some weepy, weepy, sitcommish drivel, Homer and Bart managed to salvage some comedic moments, especially with the hot dog vendor and when Homer tells Lisa: "We can go to the pound and get another Jazzman", was pure LOL funny.

What truly would've made this episode shine would be some of those cloud ghosts taking human form and getting into a fist fight with Homer!

    Grade: D - 1.75/5

    EDIT: j/k...RS is a 4/5.

i read it before the edit yet i was still almost positive he was joking...

btw why do some people consider the end a dream? is it? i always considered it a figment of lisa's imagination that her and her saxophone idol got to play one last time. besides doesn't it take place right after people hear the song on the radio? wouldn't that mean that half of the episode, if not more, would have been a dream, considering we don't really see any characters asleep IIRC (been a little while since I last saw it)?

Basically is it a dream or is merely a figment of lisa's imagination that her and her idol got to play jazz one last time

Sorry, I meant figment. I will edit my post. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'll concede that I initially found this episode slightly boring and lacking in depth but, recently, I have found myself liking it more and more every time I've watched it. It balances humor and emotion in a way was a tribute to the show's success during the classic era and it was great seeing Bleeding Gums Murphy again and also seeing the interaction between him and Lisa (it's a shame they didn't keep him on though because I think it would have been good to see more of him and Lisa together). The last segment where Lisa and Bleeding Gums Murphy played together one last time was truly beautiful and very moving and touching.

The humor in this episode was great too for the most part. The Cosby Show parody was one of the most pricelessly hilarious things I've ever seen on the Simpsons. The James Earl Jones scene at the end was also a classic.

Some things missed the mark. I felt Marge's reaction to Bart's sickness in the first scene was out of character for her and I thought Mrs Krabappel's treatment of Bart was a little too sadistic, even given the history between them. Homer was a jerkass in parts of this episode and I was one of the few here that thought his "we can always go down to the pound and get a new jazzman" wasn't particularly funny. But, even with all that, I liked Homer's characterization for the most part because he did come across as sensitive and caring and trying to understand and show some empathy for his daughter. Bart's "gift" to Lisa was also very moving

4/5 and it probably deserves higher. A very good episode

5/5 It is just perfect in every sense. The scene with Bleedin Gums Murphy and Lisa is arguably the most heart warming scene in the entire history of the show.

Very good episode, the end is hilarious (the dream/imagination of Lisa), with Darth Vader, Mufasa and James Earl Jones...
Touching episode, but I'm disappointed that BGM is definitely dead after this episode.

Tremendous episode with tons of emotion, and Bart's characterization is kept very nice and childlike in this episode, with him fucking around in the hospital, to thinking less than a quarter of his money is still amazing, to helping out his sister. 5/5.

Fairly weak for the classic era, and this is mainly down to a number of gags that bomb and shroud the episode. It is by no means bad however, I enjoyed the Bart/Lisa moments and the rendition of The Jazzman, but it's not very funny and a couple of the gags actually border on cringeworthy (grandpa's "death" scene, lumpy the snake). I just got the impression that the writers were trying so hard to cram a gag in to every possible crevice yet failed, lacking the effortlessness that is coupled with the funniest episodes. In fact I only think I laughed once or twice during the episode. Of course humour isn't everything but here I just felt it got in the way of the episode so much and stopped the episode from reaching its full potential. Therefore it gets a B-, high 3/5 or low 4/5, I can't decide. (I voted 4 but probably should have voted 3).
