Yet again, a travesty among Simpsons episodes. This one has a rather uninspired and tepid plot, offering few jokes (the edited "Gone With The Wind" was the only good one!), and one of the worst sub-plots to grace God's green Earth. I won't bore you with my hatred of Homer trying to sell springs, but the spring in the eye joke is the most disturbing thing ever. Bart's plot was boring and failed to keep me entertained, and the 3rd act run-away on a boat thing didn't do it any justice. Some celebrity I've never heard of before comes along to attempt to save everyone from dying, he fails somehow and swims away. Homer's spring sub-plot ties in with the main "plot" and everything goes back to normal. Boring plots aside, characterisations were poor and there were very few jokes attempted to be made. Another bad apple. D

A nice episode, very good for season 10. Nice relationship with Bart and Grampa in this episodes. I always loved the old characters and this episodes shows my reasons for liking them so much - telling boring stories, mishearing things or similar. Homer's subplot was hilarious,I like the way they connected it with the main one at the end. I'll give it 5/5.

I felt like this story had a lot of potential, but it was wasted by just being not funny. It also marks what I think is the beginning of the watering down of Bart, which the show still hasn't recovered from. 2/5

I didn't like this episode at all. The only good part about it was the "Can't Buy Me Love" scene at the retirement castle. 2/5.

Ehh, I didn't think it was that bad. Homer was a terrible jerk, and there was that eye-watering moment with the springs in the eyes. but Bart's plot was good and I enjoyed his interaction with Grampa, even if the ending was pretty awkward. B- probably, but I haven't seen it for a while.

Average episode, although it was still quite enjoyable. The ending is what really brought it down, but apart from that it was rather strong. I can't really think of much to say on the episode, since there was nothing bad yet nothing really good either.

I don't think it's a great episode, but it's not bad either. The beginning was pretty good but the ending was terrible. A average episode.

I just watched it and it only confirmed how terrible this episode is. It's almost like they made a conscious decision somewhere during season 10 to give up writing smart comedy and start writing for children. Bart taking the old people out to have fun, what a lame development that was. I thought he just wanted to leave...and at the very end when they're being rescued, Bart agreed to come by the old folks home again? How does that make sense? There was just no quality control

There are a handful of funny moments - the "children future" musical, "I said DON'T pull, DON'T" and "you sunk my battleship". D-

This episode was pretty funny; but the thing I hate so very, very much about it is that it could've been made so much better. As it's flipping past the jokes, I can't help but think, "They should've done this instead of that", and "They could've done without that". This happened for the whole episode, which made me really, really annoyed. Wasted potential. For that, I don't like this episode.

    3/5, good episode.
Kids, let me tell you about another so-called ``wicked'' guy. He had long hair and some wild ideas. He didn't always do what other people thought was right. And that man's name was...
I forget. But the point is... I forget that, too. Marge, you know what I'm talking about. He used to drive that blue car?

A very good episode, one of the best of season 10. It featured a simple, solid storyline, had an entertaining subplot, and tied together pretty nicely at the end. 4/5

Three issues I have with what people have said/alluded to in this thread:

The runaway on a boat thing: I think it's understandable in the episode, unlike in certain other episodes where taking an issue with this plot would be valid. Bart realised the old people weren't having as much fun as they could, he developed some genuine fondness for him, and in a 10-year-old-kid way of thinking he took them out for a boat ride.

The danger on the boat: Just a way to tie Homer's spring plot together with Bart's plot. It's refreshing to see two subplots tie themselves together at the end of an episode on The Simpsons (and in a totally absurd, unrealistic, Simpsons-esque way). Also showing that Bart doesn't, and didn't think things through totally. The fact that the boat sunk, and the old people just wanted to play bingo was also a pretty funny cheap-shot against the old people, who just want to live their boring old lives ("Ooh I don't like the looks of those teenagers", would be an example from another episode)

Bart wanting to spend time with the old people: As I said, he developed a fondness for them. I think the general term for this is called "character development", lol. I don't think it's farfetched for Bart to grow attatched to these old people after spending so much time with them, and getting to know them so well. He even got to have some real fun with them by the end, with that whole boat thing.

I've warmed up to this episode since that last post, especially the springy subplot. It still isn't a good episode but it has its moments. 2/5

Not much to say on this one, it's pretty funny but not as funny as it could have been. It has an equal share of funny and terrible moments. For example, the edited movie joke was brilliant but what was up with that children are the future song? C
