They had to start somewhere, and this feels like a bit of an experiment.
The inclusion of 'The Raven', however well done, really let's it down for me.
The other two parts are fairly funny - 'Bad Dream House' is my favourite, while the introduction of Kang and Kodos in 'Hungry are the Damned' isn't too far behind.
    Overall 6/10

3/5. Not bad, but inferior to all of THOHs II-VII. The classic wacky humour of THOHs wasn't quite there yet at the beginning - this later development is why I dislike Season 2 compared to 3-8.
Bart: "Please don't call our parents!"
Chief: "I'm afraid I have to for hijinks like these. Hijinks - it's a funny word. Three dotted letters in a row."
    Eddie: "Is it hyphenated?"
Chief: "It used to be, back in the good old days, you know. Of course, every generation hyphenates the way it wants to. Then there's *NSYNC! What the hell is that? Jump in any time there, Eddie, these are good topics."

"Bad Dream House" and "Hungry Are the Damned" are in my top 10 THOH acts. A lot of the dialogue of the haunted house was hilarious, and the book joke was great in Hungry Are the Damned. I admire The Raven, but I don't really like watching it.

I just saw this again and was really impressed. "The Raven" grew on me this time, because I actually listened to the dialogue and admired how it was physically interpreted. Dan's acting is brilliant, as is James Earl Jones' narration. It feels like something that could only have been done in season 2...something mature and more leisurely paced that doesn't have to be filled with jokes.

The animation in this episode is brilliant throughout. I love the design and just the feel of the haunted house, the lighting of the spaceship (and the rest of the episode) and all of the effects and layers of animation of The Raven.

My only (minor) complaint is with the cutaways during "The Raven" to the treehouse. It would've been great standing alone, and the cutaways didn't feel like they fit well.

Now it's my second-favorite THOH behind THOH IV

    A/A+

    3/5

"Hungry are the Damned" was good, but the other two were relatively mediocre. Definitely not the worst ThoH, though.

I'm going against the curve here when I say that Bad Dream House is my favorite segment in this one.

    Bad Dream House- A-
Hungry Are the Damned- A- (partly because it introduced Kang and Kodos)
The Raven- B (never understood why people think its so good)

    Overall: B+ or 4/5

The Raven- 5/5 (One of my favorites).
she didnt exactly read shrek the 3rd, which apparently exists as some sort of companion book for a pixar movie. no, this would probably take several minutes (perhaps 10), and would have ultimately depricated the shrek 3 cinematic experience

she merely looked at the book

she saw it, perhaps in the childrens section of a barnes & noble, registered it in her mind as being in existance, and filed it away for later as the subject for a post on BOOKS YOUVE READ. only she just looked at it. and it was shrek 3

in a way its the saddest post ive ever read

Brilliant. Probably the only Treehouse of Horror that perfectly blends the tales with the right amount of humor. In later THOHs, you tend to forget that it's supposed to be halloween, but not this one. A

4/5 is how I voted. I thought that "Hungry are the Damned" was the best segment of the show.
Kids, let me tell you about another so-called ``wicked'' guy. He had long hair and some wild ideas. He didn't always do what other people thought was right. And that man's name was...
I forget. But the point is... I forget that, too. Marge, you know what I'm talking about. He used to drive that blue car?

-- Homer's parable of the guy in the blue car, ``Homer the Heretic''

    Ralph: I Won! I Won!
Principal Skinner: No Ralph this means you're failing English
Ralph: Me fail English? That's unpossible.

My second favourite Treehouse of Horror of all time. It's just a perfect, hilarious episode, with easily the best animation of the second season.

The classic. I can't even pick my favourite segment, they're all so good
some classic moments like Bart: "Do you get HBO?" Kang: "No that would cost extra"
also it was the first time I heard The Raven
    5/5 from me

i think it's a good Treehouse episode where all three stories are at least
entertaining. My favorite one is the first "Bad Dream House".

    4/5
