So, reading about Simpsons Illustrated #2 - it really is just like Simpsons Comics Treasure Trove, right? I don't understand the appeal of buying a comic book with random stories from different issues thrown in together, unless they're discontinuing Simpsons Classics (if they don't, within a year or so they will be up to the Cecil/Bob story, and I don't think people will be too happy double dipping for the same story in such a short span of time).

Just got Bart #67 and have to say I'm kind of disappointed. All of the bonus stuff - Bongo Beat, Junk Mail, interview with Ian Boothby - are identical to what was in Simpsons #186. The Bongo Beat is understandable, as there's probably some readers that only get one series and possibly don't know what its purpose is. But for the letters, I don't think there's much excuse, I'm sure they received more than the 3 or 4 letters that they reprinted.

Thanks for the link yodazone Nice to see they're definitely continuing Super Spectacular (I can't remember that particular page being posted previously), and I dig the new logo. Also interesting that they've discontinued Classics in favor of Illustrated.

Noticed the upcoming Bart paperback is called Bart Simpson Out to Lunch. I think they're really grasping at straws now...

Questions for the Simpsons Comics gurus:

Does "Bart & Lisa Simpson in Halloween Hoodoo!" (which is in the paperback THOH from Beyond the Grave) appear in any of the comic books, and if so, which one?
From the way it is drawn, it looks like it was meant for an issue of Bart Simpson Comics, but I can't find it in any of them (nor in any of the THOH comic books).

Just to state it with certainty, it was new in THOH From Beyond the Grave. I've indexed all the material in every comic reprint volume, flagging and linking to the source or flagging it as new material. For example for this volume you'll find that info here;

Very little of what was first printed in a volume ended up elsewhere; If they're going to start doing that I'm certainly going to have to start reflecting it within that list (as well as flagging it on the comic itself as having been reprinted from the book.)

Thanks for the link! I was very worried that Super Spectacular was dead. Glad it's still going and will continue into 2012!

The second banana comics are cool, but it'll be really hard putting out an order for them at the local comic shop if they don't have a consistant title.

Update: Got back from the comic book shop, picked up the new logo Futurama and paged through the new logo Simpsons Comics. They're using heavier paper for the cover and heavier glossy paper for the inside pages! I wonder if this is just a special way to kick off the new logos and next issue will revert to the usual paper or if its a new thing. I hope it's new! The comics feel much more substantial and "special" with the heavier paper.

Also picked up the latest Super Spectacular. The art looks awesome for the Radioactive Man story. On par with the early Radioactive Man issues. The story looks great too, a take on the Spider-Man musical. The musical costumes for Radioactive Man are hilarious.

It's doublesized and has 3-4 stories with a credited reprint story from the old Simpsons Comics and Stories ("Lo, there shall come...a Bartman!"). Not sure where the other stories were reprinted from. Same heavy cover cardstock with the glossy insides. Funnies #7 that came out today has the same cardstock format too. These books look better than the new DC/Marvels on the shelves.

Micro review of Simpsons Super Spectacular #14

Radioactive Man proves once again that he's the most solidly consistant series at Bongo, thanks in large part to Batton Lash's writing. He really gets the series and the character. The Simpson family inspired stories can be hit-or-miss in Super Spectacular, but Radioactive Man is always good for a solid parody.

This issue they take on Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark with Radioactive Man The Musical: Turn Up The Silence. Claude Kane funds a RM musical which quickly falls into disarray much like the Spider-Man musical had. The whole story is a full on parody of Turn Off the Dark's production, including injured cast members, fired directors and a British musician with an inflated ego. I found the while thing to be hilarious, especially the costumes. There is a rival production based on RM's enemy Dr. Crab, which has alterier motives.

Overall, a 9/10. Clever writing, good art and a story that rivals the second series of Radioactive Man comics.

There is a three page Maggie story at the end by Sergio Aragonés. It's "meh", far too cutesy for my tastes.

I thought the same about the Maggie story - I liked Mageena being used for (I think) the first time since the Bartman trilogy, but I think it should be kept in Bart Comics.

I just noticed that yesterday's Funnies #7 still has the old Bongo logo on the cover even with the heavy cardstock as the other books. Wonder if they're gonna change it or if this is a variant. I'll check Barnes & Nobles to see how they get their stash. I notice they order 20 copies of each Bongo title where my local comic shops only order 1 or 2.

The "extras" in Simpsons Comics #186 and Bart Simpson #67 weren't precisely the same.. they had different Bongo Bonus Stamps!

In March 2001 Bongo released Radioactive Man #222 continuing the tradition of parodying classic comics. This particular issue parodied Marvel Comics, with the cover following the design of Captain Marvel #22. In 1974 Marvel began releasing Marvel Value Stamps, a series of one hundred stamps that comic fans could cut out of their comics and place into a booklet they could send away for. In Radioactive Man #222 they honoured this practice with a Bongo Bonus stamp:



Above on the left we find Spiderman on Marvel Value Stamp #1 taken from the March 1974 issue of Captain Marvel #35. The stamps were issued in random order and covered one hundred Marvel characters. Above to the right we find Bongo's take on Marvel value stamps, Plasmo taken from Radioactive Man #222.

In January 2012 this tradition returned, with the first two numbered Bongo Bonus Stamps. We've added an index page for these to the comics guide.



The wording admits to a certain "tongue in cheek" view of all of this, of course. Nonetheless I hope they continue the series!

Lest anyone is confused by this, these aren't "stamps" in the sense one thinks of them currently; just like the original Marvel series they are neither perforated, gummed or adhesive, they are merely printed images.

I'd liked to have seen some editorials with reflections of those stories, on how the writer came up with the idea, their inspiration and stuff, kind of like an audio commentary...
