    Thanks!

Just finished a Death Note manga style story for the next Treehouse of Horror. If you haven't read the original series it's really good. There's a solid anime version and two live action movies, though I don't know if it works as well for folks who haven't read the books.

Nina Matsumota is doing the art and she's all kinds of great. She did a manga Simpsons story that was just reprinted in this year's Free Comic Book day issue.

This isn't art from the issue, it's from her web site but it'll give you a taste of things to come.

    Hey Ian!

I was wondering if I could ask you something in regards to my last batch of reviews in this thread... Do you have any word on the Futurama/Simpsons crossover trade paperback, or would the release of the Chili Chili Bang Bang story in The Simpsons Summer Shindig #2 mean it's been postponed further?

It's up to Harper Collins at this point. Looking forward to it coming out as much as anyone. Glad to see Chilli Chilli was printed, James shows me his pencils but it's always great to see everything fully inked and coloured.

Yeah, I can't wait for another Simpsons/Futurama crossover to be released. Hopefully we get to see one in the near future.

Is there anyone that likes the cover design of the US edition of Simpsons Comics Treasure Trove? It looks really bad, the UK edition and the first two issues of the Australian one looked much better...unfortunately starting with #3 Australia is also using the American design:

Also, do any of the other editions of #1 (this is from the Australian one, not sure if it's in the UK or US ones) have this interesting error:

BAHAHAHAHAAHAHA did they seriously stuff up like that?
"Look, Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And i'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth! Because when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo, that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it, Marge. It's Chinatown!" - Homer's rant.

It's not the first time, either. It's happened in Simpsons Comics #54 and Simpsons Comics #68 in what are somewhat worse circumstances; rather than the text being copied on the page after, the text was copied from a totally different part of the issue (and from a totally different story):

  11. #1181

I think I remember a somewhat recent story having a page where the text was printed larger than the white speech bubble it was meant for, so it overlapped. I was really surprised that got past someone but switching the text with another scene is worse than even that. I wonder how laid back Bongo is with that sort of stuff because I know if that happened with certain other comic book studios someone would pay dearly for it.

A Death Note based story sounds pretty awesome. It'll probably be all over the place more than usual considering Death Notes' popularity.

I hope they'll stop the boring stories and turn them back into the funny stories like these from 2000!
And, please, dear artists: stop drawing the characters with those extremely soft lines and draw skinny characters skinny and fat characters fat!

#143 contains one of the most boring stories ever!
Ooooh, that sounded like an order . . .

I agree. Their references and parodies have gotten as tired as the show's. The whole New Duff thing was alright, in my opinion, though it did have some terrible flaws. I miss the days when there was a parody you could laugh the entire way through, like "A Trip To Simpsons Mountain" in #15.

  14. #1184

Well if you guys had a chance to see 144 I thought it was pretty fun. Flying Hellfish flashback story. No straight out parody, and while the few panels in the current time were done in the usual cut and dry style the flashback scenes to the war are done in a more grittier and rougher version of the usual style that's been seen in some of the Treehouses. So it sounds like something you two would like at this time. I'm glad the alternative styles are seeping out of just the treehouses a bit.

Is that John Costanza art? It looks a lot like his (mainly because he's so terrible anyway), but in a way it also looks like it was done by someone else.

I didn't really like Simpsons #144, it just wasn't funny and the art kind of annoyed me at times, regardless of whether Spiegle is a legend or not.

#145 was better, I really liked the comic book shop story, and I actually like how Costanza handled drawing Homer pretending to be Comic Book Guy. Couldn't really care for the second story though.

Bart #43 was great, finally, the closest thing that can be regarded as a sequel to Lisa Comics #1...

    Hi Ivan!

Yes, it's the art of John Constanza.

I hope the issues #145 and 146 are worthwhile for fans like me.

Are you seriously still carrying on about that? It's the first CBG story in a while. Get over it...

  21. #1191

I haven't done one of these overkill reviews for a while and I don't intend to do it much in future so don't hold your breath, but THoH #14 was really awesome so it's worth it. (aside from one thing, later.)

The first two stories, the first being inspired by 30 Days of Night, and the second one by Death Note (drawn by you know who), are two of the funnest stories I've seen out of this thing in a while. Sort of interestingly, the Simpsons are bad guys in the first one. You can probably tell from the screenshot that Wiggum's in it big time, and he's actually pretty badass in it. It's also surprisingly gory. I think it's the goriest of these that I've seen, I love it. It's nothing absolutely insane, especially if you're used to comics in general, but I guess if you're squeamish you should know that.

Second one is really amusing if you've seen the Death Note anime or read its (imo far superior) manga. It's still kind of weird seeing them drawn like this, but there's no cheap loljapan nonsense jokes this time like the last comic Spacecoyote penciled. It sticks to the DN meets the Simpsons gig. I'll say that it's really refreshing to see them try something anime/manga related that's more specific and faithful to the original material, rather than the typical "lets just throw a bunch of really commonly known anime stereotypes together".
Even if you've never read or seen Death Note though I think it's a really fun story on it's own.

The only thing about this Treehouse though is the third story I think is pretty horrendous. I didn't even bother scanning pictures. No disrespect meant to Mr. Hernandez but it's just sooo boring. It's basically two giant monster homers fighting eachother. It's not very well drawn, even in a quirky way like the first story, and...I dunno. It's just boring, you'll understand if you read it. I hate to sound so harsh but it is what it is. The first two are so much fun that it eclipses this but it's too bad one of the weakest stories ever to come out of one of these halloween specials has to be put together with two of the funnest.

It's still worth it though, you should get it.

Did anyone else see that in the December issue of Simpsons Comics, we're going to see what happened to Plopper/Spiderpig after the dome collapsed?

Something I've only just remembered to comment on, but I love how Simpsons Comics #145 and #146 have 'matching' covers:

I remember noticing it a couple months ago on Planet Bongo and thinking it was a really neat idea.

Yeah it's alright. Done in respect to the Beijing games I guess.

Marge's comic is actually about a race.

Just to give my fellow comic readers a heads up, check your THOH #14 before buying them: mine has REPEAT PAGES in them (the first story and I had two Part Twos in the third story. The second story (the one with the magna artwork) has no beginning.

I called the owner of my local comics shop (Sky High in San Marcos, CA) and he said he'll order me a new one. Unfortunately, I have to wait either a week or two weeks for my replacement comic.

Now that makes me worry because I get my comics sent 300km to me, so it's a pain to replace them...

I like those two matching covers. I like the Homer/CBG cover art better, but the story in the other one is better.
