Simpsons Comics #183: A Look... Forward

Another homage cover, coming to you in the October Issue!

.....We await the final Simpsons cover to see the heading on top - they should use "The Mirth of a Nation" but may go for something along the line of Bart having Homer over a barrel, or perhaps an allusion to Homer breaking the ice.

Simpsons Comics #183 is now available, and Bongo chose the caption wisely; they used "The Girth of a Nation", parodying the original Archie comic "The Mirth of a Nation", which, of course, is a parody itself of "The Birth of a Nation". Sergio Aragonés Funnies #4 was also released today. With the infamous Stan Goldberg of Archie fame on board they did a great parody of Archie, replete with Milhouse as Jughead with his famous hat, and one also sees CBG reading Archie #1 within. Also includes a one page Angry Dad story and a two page Snowball II story. (I'd say Snowball V, but as Lisa says "we'll just call you Snowball II, and pretend this whole thing never happened.." I wish I could, I wish I could.)

on the other hand for american curiosities i have to paid also much money

Yes, those variants are usually very expensive especially to ship to U.S. fans. I had a connection in Germany who would buy and forward them to me but these look even more harder to get with the 333 print runs. It's pretty cool how they made variants of the different covers that were inside Comic Book Guy #1 for the other issues. Wondering what this year's Bart's Horror Show variant cover is going to look like too.

Have you seen any variant (or regular) covers for "Funnies" 1-4 for Deutschland? I want to get all of those.

New Bongo logo and issue logos suck. Makes me wonder how they messed with Simpsons Super Spectacular.

Holy crap those logos are butt ugly. Is their confirmation these are permanent or is it possible it's, you know, maybe a 1-off "retro" theme for the month as that is when the "relaunch" of Simpsons Illustrated is occurring.

Speaking of Simpsons Illustrated, I don't understand why they're suddenly using that name again. If they're reprinting various stories from old comics, that's exactly what they did with Simpsons Comics Treasure Trove (and look what happened to that - discontinued after only a year or so). Has absolutely nothing in common with the former Simpsons Illustrated, it would seem.

So are the comics these days similar to the show? The styles of older comics seemed to mimic the eras at the time, but I've heard that some of the writers don't like the way the show is now.

Like, do the characters act like their season 23 selves, or more like their "classic" selves?

In the comics it really depends on the writers, but in my opinion they don't really match up with how they are in the show. If anything, they are more grounded in reality in the comics - Bart is the little brat, Lisa is the smart 2nd grader, Homer is the sometimes obnoxious yet caring father, etc. Contrasted to the current show, where they have a hundred different personalities for each character every season. I particularly like how Ian Boothby characterizes the family - he has written some great stories featuring Bart and Lisa being, well, kids; can't really say that about the show 95% of the time.

I agree. One of the best things about the old comics was the little stories at the back (speaking of which, what is with those weird Dean Rankine stories they've been running the last few months?), and how they made up a comic book concept for a lot of secondary characters. Plus, that's pretty awesome cover art (and Simpsons Comics doesn't look half bad this time around with the new design, either).

Can only hope that this "rebrand" includes the comeback of Junk Mail - last year they were running those ads for a couple months asking for letters, but nothing ever came of it.

Same here. I might have to pre-order them online because I can't rely on my local shops to order them. They overlook these one-shot titles and still underorder the other regular monthlies.

I also read that Aragones is writing & drawing a "Maggie" special which looks like that would be part of this "One shot wonders" line.

I hope Krusty gets a One-Shot....and Kang and Kodos....

Wow, these covers are terribly unimaginative. Just a standard picture of The Simpsons against a white background? Awful.

Well, except the Ralph one, but that's just going to be 30 pages of nose humor.

I'm not a massive fan of these covers, but I can understand where they are coming from with changing the design. The current one is almost a decade old, and I guess they wanted to shake things up a little. Every time they've changed the cover design in the past (this will be the fourth different cover design in Simpsons Comics history), it has been rather subtle if anything, so they probably thought they should undertake a bigger change.

Though, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

There's a new Bongo promo insert floating around that previews some of the Bongo books for next year. I tried 3 shops and couldn't find any but found one on ebay:

It also mentions the other characters who are getting the "One shot Wonders" spotlight with: Ralph Wiggum, Lil Homer, Bart's Pal, Millhouse & Maggie.
