It has some funny moments, but the ending (or lack thereof) ruins it.
I don't care for the toad licking or ox testicles either.
3/5
I admit it's sometimes funny, but this episode doesn't fit in with the series for me. It's plot was pretty inappropriate and pointless and its style is radically different from any other thing I saw previously at The Simpson.
Moreover, though it had good lines, I found it pretty uneffective at humour. A lot of jokes didn't work because the situation was too strange.
It could be much worse but, even so, I can't pass it. 4.5/10.

Whoa guys, I think you rate it WAY too high. It sucked. A stupid story, maybe 2 so called jokes. The only thing that was ok was the animation. One of the worst episodes ever. Thanks, Mr Scully, thanks a lot! D-
I don't know if anyone consider it as an important factor of this episode, but I really adore the satires shown in the episode... there are slight hint of TV satire, but what is so important is the satire of settlement of missionary or any outside factor into a native land - I mean, the episode just really goes good on illustrating the decline of the island due to the involvement of the new cultural feature that is not compatible to the island's culture at all. It kinda goes too far in the end with surprise reprisal of Betty White in the end (which, I didn't not really find brilliant, but it was better than seeing the forced survival story of Homer and 'Lisa Jr.' to get out of the volcano... Scully era style, that is)
Other than that, the satire and humor makes this far-out concept very plausible and enjoyable to watch. I actually liked Homer's character in island though - very caring and willing to take responsibility (the toad thing, well, that's different story)
I'll be a good person and give it B. Very good satire and gags, but plot has a lot leaving to desire of
calmer than you are
I definitely agree with Dewey about its satirical take on TV and missionary work and that definitely made up for the fact that it didn't have an ending; 4/5.
This episode had very little substance at all and the non-sequitor humor in general wasn't even that funny. Watchable though 2/5.
I Thought it was Great, Some Great Jokes, an Okay story-line, i must admit a crappy end but still good 4/5
"Look, Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And i'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth! Because when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo, that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it, Marge. It's Chinatown!" - Homer's rant.
The mob scene with PBS made the episode for me!
"elmo knows where you live."
But yeah, the ending kinda ruined it. But it was good to see Bender.
Another average Season 11 episode.
I thought the opening bit with PBS would only last a minute or so but it went on and on and was generally unfunny.
It picks up a bit once Homer reaches the island. However, the ending was just terrible! They painted themselves into a corner and got out of it very poorly.
Not even "Save me Jebus" can save this episode from a D
We got no food, we got no jobs, our PETS HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!
I think falls into the catagory with "the computer wore menace shoes," and Simpsons bible stories, since they both have dumb endings that dont explain how he got back home, put the family on an island, or send them to hell. In my unimportant opinion, they are non-canonical.

4/5
Good points: Betty White, Do Shut Up, Jebus
Bad points: What the hell was up with the ending?, too much toad licking, I didn't like the whole Bart B-story.

to me, people seem to only notice this episode because of the ending, and the whole Jeebus part... Jeebus is overrated, I think, and the ending i actually thought was clever {Even though i saw it first on my DVD Player}![]()
4/5.
Elmo Knows Where You Live! LOL
3/5 Funny at the beginning, and while some other jokes work later on it's just a little crazy and not good enough to be any higher.

4/5 would be a 3 but it gets bonus points for the first reference to jebus![]()
Let us celebrate with the adding of chocolate to milk.
I think this is one of the best episodes of season 11, because it avoids a number of pitfalls that made a majority of Scully-era episodes so irritating: Homer's not an asshole (at least not in my opinion), the guest star's relevant (I love Betty White; she's hilarious here), and the story at least tries to be down-to-earth, characterization-wise (Homer is earnest when it comes to helping the natives (and he's doing it to make his family proud), and I think the whole Lisa Jr. thing is so dang cute). Yeah, the ending is pretty stupid (and sort of lazy), but at least most of the episode follows a linear path; the story isn't erratic--events naturally flow from each other (although having to leave the country because you've pissed off PBS is a bit much, but I think it's executed in a very funny way). That's a lot more than you can usually expect from a season 11 episode.
3.5/5, which I rounded up for the sake of the poll.
A
best of season 11
4/5, everything on the island is gold
I'm not really a fan of this episode. I don't find it particularly funny or interesting. It also happens to be a part of what I consider the worst season. I just think that season 11 is so weak. 2 good episodes and a couple of bearable ones. The rest suck. Missionary Impossible: 2/5

B-
kinda meh episode, but has one of my favourite lines from Homer
"Great, now my testicle's got ants on it"![]()
"You saved my network"
"Wouldn't be the first time!"
Just saw this for the first time in years and it really is one of the better episodes from season 11. The PBS satire is great as well as the stuff on the Island. I actually liked the ending (as seen in the quote I used), good to see an old jab at Family Guy. Only lacking part was the life at home bit while Homer was gone (except for the quick Hagar joke) Otherwise, the "Bart as Homer" plot just seemed uninspired
4/5
Season 11 continues when Homer becomes a missionary! He must flee Springfield thanks to a phony PBS donation. As the episode's end implies, PBS controls all...
This is another ridiculously crazy Scully plot with a very lazy ending and some poor jokes and moments. The thing is though much of this is still hilarious to me. I say still because I can remember watching this one when I was 11. I can still remember quoting lines like "Elmo Knows Where You Live!" the next day at school. I really enjoy the entire opening act from the PBS stuff through Jeebus. Homer's reaction to the clearly busy bank made me laugh really hard on this rewatch.
I was ready to say act 2 is weaker, and it is, but it has some pretty good jokes too. The toad licking is something I'll always associate more with Family Guy since they devoted an entire episode to the idea but it appeared here first. I enjoy Homer being motivated by Flanders' envy to do a good job on the island and I like his distribution of the new familial roles. Bart taking over his job gives us two really funny scenes, the first in this act. Some things don't work such as the ox testicle joke or the entire casino plot point, but other things are very funny such as the Flintstones pelican cement mixer.
The last act is very short and the PBS ending is definitely a cop-out typical for the Scully Era. Having already checked what episode comes next this season if I remember correctly it has another one of these style endings. It is understandable to hate them but I actually enjoyed the way this one came back to the beginning and the Family Guy shot as well as I assume Dan's Rupert Murdoch impersonation and Bart's fourth wall breaking last line. I'm gonna give this a 4/5. I think it is solidly entertaining at the beginning and end with some good and bad in between.
