I'm surprised this one was so well liked, I found it to be really bland and uninteresting. A whole episode revolving around Bart addicted to junk food? *yawn* Brook's fat camp counselor just shouted typical drill sargeant talk non stop. Overall, Roofer was quite a step above IMHO.

    My Review

Yeah, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

    Grade: B+

Never did mention.....in the alternate version of the opening (which was great), we heard Jacques say something in french. I wonder if that was also Albert Brooks? Maybe Roger would know.

Also never mentioned that the animation was particularly strong in this one.

4/5. The second of two very good episodes in the same night. Love most everything that's already been mentioned.

Very good episode, not as good as Roofer though. The parody of the opening scene was good but not as great as everyone is saying. The I & S episode was one of the best ever though and I also liked Homer telling Bart to do the Bartman.

Nice episode. The opening scene with Skinner's toy soldiers, the credits parody, satire of the junk food industry, backpacking Germans, Itchy and Scratchy, all hit the nail on the head. The fat camp scenes were little weak - the characterisation of the camp head didn't quite click.
Overall, very good but not classic.

well, the roofer would have been better if they showed Ray a little more. That would be like there was two homers, but still it was a great ep.

great mirkiny episode with consistent humor, both satirical (pretty much everything related to the vending machines) and absurd (the new opening, the albert brooks character). very neatly paced, and some inspired plot twists. the albert brooks character was a really great take on the standard drill sergeant-type character. probably his second best performance of his on the show so far (though hank scorpio is pretty much the best one-shot character on the show ever apart from mr. bergstrom, so second best isn't bad at all). great animation everywhere (the acting on brooks' character, the falling candy, the opening sequence parody). the only thing wrong with it was the youth hostel germans stuff which wasn't that funny. And the reason he gave that a bad grade was because of a actual medical phenomenon that has happened in the past. Wow.

why I gave it a okay grade is because the third act was pretty funny, and Albert Brooks gave us a good performance.

Best episode of Season 16, for sure. The jokes were all in excellent taste, and there was only one joke that I disliked (Willie falling down the stairs. Which went on for far too long). My favourite joke would probably be Homer's "look, Bart's in love!", followed by the opening theme parody. Al Brooks put in another memorable preformance, although not topping Hank Scorpio. The "Youth Hostel" sub-plot was rather underplayed and undeveloped, although I'd much rather see Bart's story than a full-blown sub-plot about the Simpsons been tormented by Germans. The meta-references (Herb, "Do The Bartman") were great too. The characters were believable and their regular selves and animation was good, too. Oh, even this episode's Homer's inane dream sequence, which I'm becoming weary these days, was funny. I really wish that all of the new episodes were like this. A

    Additional things:
    - First use of "bastard" this season. And, again, it's by Willie. The last use of it was be his character too. (Today I Am A Klown)
    - Haven't we already had a "Do The Bartman" reference this season? I haven't seen any episodes twice, but the joke in this one made me think it's been used before.
    - Can't we ever have a regular end credit sequence nowadays?

He said "Be Careful." And it certainly sounded like him.

Dunno if anyone's mentioned it, but I LOVED the I&S cartoon especially how for the first time since probably season 6 or 7 it actually tied into the Simpsons narrative that was happening. Amazing.

    Again, this episode was amazing.

Not as good as "Roofer", but still a very nice episode. I especially loved the opening credits parody. Hilarious.

I loved the opening bit of Skinner playing with his army men. That's CLASSIC simpsons. The clincher: when he shoved them into the desk they scream. These two episodes are the best in years! Now I have faith that they could keep going until season 20!

It was pretty good. I didn't pay as much attention to it as I did to the other episode, but it seemed OK. I especially liked the re-creation of the opening credits. The thought of Bart having a heart attack is bizarre, but I think it was done well.

    4/5.

    Detailed review:

Brilliantly directed episode. Skinner's fantasy had me scratching my head at first, then laughing like mad. (best touch was all the army men screaming when they were pushed into the drawer) The jokes were rapid fire, i was giggling through everything with Skinner. He had so many great afterthought lines (like the "yo" as he signs the contract)

Ralph had me cracking up by holding up the line.

Bart's bit with Willie and the skateboard played out just like a Butterfinger commercial. I don't know if it was intended, but it was the same format. Bart tricks an adult to get candy, the aldult is embarrassed, Bart hums and gets away (complete with 90's style skateboard).

Marge becomes a robot? haha "have no fears we'll have stories for years"

The fat Bart introduction... comic gold! I loved how slow he was. But his cracking the sidewalk was a little much for me, even deflecting cars like he was The Incredible Hulk. I give the sequence an A for originality, but B for excecution. The best way how the scene seamlessly blends back into the real world when Bart has a heart attack.

The heart attack was done well, and Homer's lines were hilarious. Escpecially "my little boy is in love!"

Great sign gag in the hospital. And another knockout performance by Hibbert. The I&S cartoon was pretty funny, but the heart chasing was a bit tedious. Can i also mention that those were the cutest alligators i have ever seen?

Krusty's zipper.... fucking heinous! Worst part of the show.

mmmm, milkshake festival. and Homer on the bed with his milkshakes, loved it.

I liked how so many things were implied with Bart walking into his intervention. More of Bart running slow

Brooks! Way to make a great character even better. Not only were all of his lines great, but his methods (long car drives, chariot pull) also liked the FMJ ref by waking up the troops.

The hostel. meh. Not that funny, but nothing embarrassing, and it didn't hold up the plot any. And finally this episode ends with Homer and the guest ranting. Sounds like this was improved (like the one with Ray) too. Awesome episode. I have the feeling it will only get better with time.

This is one of the 3 episodes this season that I've actually liked. It was well done and very few jokes fell flat. Nothing spectacular, but a solid 3/5...

Parody made me laugh. 99 Luftbaloons made me laugh. Europeans made me laugh.

Notice that the part they used for the parody was the original opening sequence (slow drift toward school, redirects toward window, instead of drift toward window right off the bat), before it was redone in the early 1990s. (around season 2 or 3?)

what was bart allergic to again? there's something we can add to our trivia repertoire...

Yeah, the stapler attacking Skinner's 'nam daydream platoon was slick. Maybe I will torrent this one at work tonight and give it another shot.

Line changed from promo to show

What was up with the line change from the promo? In the commercial clip of the hospital scene, Homer said, "Kids aren't supposed to die from a heart attack" and then he listed three funny ways that kids should die, ending with "eaten by witches." But in the actual show, they replaced the last part with "crushed by a cat" or something like that.

Did anyone else notice this? Is it a common practice? Why the change? I thought the promo line was much better.

EDIT: I originally wrote "cancer" instead of "heart attack" -- don't know why...
