Rate/Review - Bart Gets an Elephant

I think this episode is very underrated. Although Homer was at his most jerkassy state of season five, I still thought he was very funny - unlike in the Scully era. This episode was full of hilarious jokes, granted some of them seemed a little wacky, but I'll still give this a 5/5.

I agree that this episode deserves some credit for some hilarious scenes; my favourites are the spring cleaning bit and the Sound of Music bit. The "Elephants don't have keys" line, as dumb as it was, had me laughing as well.

Still, for Season 5, this episode is at the bottom of the barrel for me. Everything in this episode that wasn't funny was just garbage. I give it 2/5.
Bart: "Please don't call our parents!"
Chief: "I'm afraid I have to for hijinks like these. Hijinks - it's a funny word. Three dotted letters in a row."
    Eddie: "Is it hyphenated?"
Chief: "It used to be, back in the good old days, you know. Of course, every generation hyphenates the way it wants to. Then there's *NSYNC! What the hell is that? Jump in any time there, Eddie, these are good topics."

Great jokes, but didn't pack some of the wallop of laughter that many other season 5's had. But still, great stuff, especially the "Go Away" sign and "Weee loovee you..."

It's got lots of funny jokes but not the best plot.

3/5. It has a few good jokes. Overrated, if anything...

Marty: "We think we know how your mind works, Bart. So how about this, we pay your principal $10,000 to pull down his pants and keep them down for the rest of the school year, ha ha!"
    Skinner: "I'll do it, Bart."
    Bart: "Ermmm...no."
Bill: "Okay, okay... what if we use the $10,000 to, er, surgically transform Skinner here into, er... some kind of a lobster-like creature?"
Skinner: "Now wait just a minute, that wasn't discussed with me."

It is a weak story, there's some very funny jokes but most season 5 episodes are funnier on every level and have better stories even though 5 is the weakest of the classics plot wise.
I give it a B, I always seem to be in between the people that think its brilliant and those that think its bad.

The first two acts were pretty much brilliant in the humor department; the third act kind of fell apart, was very predictable, and felt slapped together. Not one of season 5's best, but surely not its worst either. B

One of my favorite episodes. I believe Season 5 was Homer at his prime.

"He took Bart too?! That wasn't part of our deal, Blackhart! That wasn't paaaaart!"

EDIT: In fact, this is a perfect example of how humor can support a weak plot, referring to Harleen's thread of Humor or Story.

Meh. I didn't find the episode to be all that hilarious. I wasn't very fond of Bart's characterization. I don't know, it was all just so zany and wacky. B-

it's a good episode for me too.
The start of the episode was really funny with Homer and the Trampoline
Also during the episodes some great ones ( e.g. Moe provides the peanuts)
Has also some weaker moments, but in general a good episode

Just rewatched. I think this episode has a couple of big issues that sort of link to each other: Bart's characterization is obnoxious and not really sympathetic. The reason for that is the second issue, Stampy himself. He's a jerk, not really funny, and his running gag of putting people in his mouth is just sort of lame a gross. I didn't care what happened to the elephant, making me unsympathetic to Bart as well. Homer's at his loudest and most obnoxious in the whole season, and a strangely large amount of his lines were just sort of meh.

There are some great jokes interspersed in the ep, and the first act as a whole is good, but it just has too many annoying problems. Probably the weakest of season 5.

Encyclopedia Brown spotted a mistake (that's got to be a first, an audio commentary reference!)...the trampoline bit was at the beginning of "Bart's Inner Child" (just watched it the other day).

It was undeniably really, really funny, but unfortunately that was the only good part about it. Everything else had an eerily Family Guy-ish feel to it. Homer's jerkass-ness had me going "Huh? Is that supposed to be funny? Oh yeah, I forgot: he's an asshole here. Ha ha ha." Totally spoiled both the episode and the humor for me, especially the ending gag, which should've been hilarious but ended up pointless. Points for the Sound of Music bit though. 2.5/5

Ehhhh. A few jokes in the episode seemed to gravitate that way, but for the most part I think it was more "He's an idiot; now laugh", rather than "he's an asshole; now laugh"

Subtle difference but it's quite important in judging this episode, me thinks. Homer being an asshole can be and often is a big problem. Homer being an idiot is a much lesser problem.

I'd also like to say I take offense to the Family Guy comparison. Family Guy esque jokes are unrelated to the story, while often still being funny (ish). Most of the jokes in this episode were inherently tied to the plot. Quite heavily too, I might add.

Still, the episode has its problems. I used to give it an A+, understandably, but it'd probably fetch an A- or so with me now.

Ahem. I said everything except the humor. And I meant the episode's total lack of caring about anything but laughs.

This episode had a very different taste than other ones with the wackiness value of the plot. You know what, I don't care if it's wacky--it had loads of funny jokes and was very enjoyable to me. I do think that there was a good reason Bart was a 'jerk' since he is an immature 10 years old boy who is not getting what he wanted and for the sake of protecting his elephant--it's understandable for a young immature boy to hold on to what he has, isn't it? I would've been totally bewildered if Bart, the little hellraiser, accepted the fate that would've changed some aspects of plot. Best jokes are the political banners of Republican and Democratic conventions. Overall, 5/5

Can't say I'm a huge fan, even if it is one of the better animal-themed episodes in the series. In spite of some great jokes, it features some overly wacky ones and its storytelling isn't quite as firm as most other episodes of its era. 3/5

usually an episode with an "animal plot" isn't pretty enjoyable. (The canine mounty the same) Even written by Swartzwelder. . But, it has his moments.
