    Rate/Review: On a Clear Day I Can't See My Sister (GABF05)

Not much in the description area: Lisa gets a restraining order against Bart, Homer becomes a Sprawl-Mart greeter, and I'm doing this while watching the episode. Hey, I got to watch Act I this week!

Thread opens when the episode ends on the East Coast.

EDIT: Adding Random Viewer Guy's comment to the first post so everyone can see it:

That was great! Favorite joke was when he ripped out the chip and it had a little piece of skin on it. I might actually write a real review this week because this episode was so good.

I liked the Custody Kangaroo. Busey video was weird, though I liked the "video in a video" gag.

enjoyable. Loved Gary Busey's spot. That's something I'd like to see more of in the future, guest stars filling in for something Troy McClure would do.

Come on, this was great. GREAT. The Gary Busey guest spot was one of the best guest spots ever. Everything flowed so well, and it was hilarious. I know Jeff Westbrook was the writer, and I could see a bit of the Futurama style of writing in this one. Come on, agree with me. AGREE WITH ME!

Good laughs, solid premise, unnecessary subplot, weak third act and cheap sentiment. They needed to focus a lot more on Lisa throughout the episode to make this truly work, which they failed to do. The ending was basically "meh, I guess I was a little harsh. THE END!". Pretty poor.

More to come, but since laughs count most: 3/5
But really, the thing fell apart in the third act. And honestly, if you're going to start a sympathy issue with Marge feeling sorry for Bart being punished to this extent (she DID complain to the judge that it was tearing the family apart, right?), don't show her partying in the house with the rest of the family once he's banished outside. Stick to your story.

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought that was from the golden era. Had the whole feeling of an episode from at least ten years ago.

Well, now that I've researched Gary Busey in the last three minutes, his spot makes more sense--and is funnier!

I thought it was fairly subpar. I couldn't really feel any genuine sympathy for Bart or Lisa in this one. Bart's prank was mean, but Lisa didn't seem like she was particularly hurting after the first act, she actually looked as though she were enjoying Bart's suffering and being able to poke at him. There were multiple Homer gets hurt gags. All of this would have been okay if the episode hadn't also been a little light on the laughs it was hoping to obtain.

2/5 or C- Becaus this episode was just not funny Gary Busey was useless and well Lisa was too out of character with giveing Bart an restraining order which would never happen in the golden years. Homer's job at the Sprawl Mart was a useless sideplot of the episode that got nowere. And Skinner kissing the prehistoric woman was just too freaky. Just a drop in qualty from the best of the season from last week There's Something About Marrying.

3/5 I disagree about the feel from the classic era, I thought the end was weird, I liked the Gary Busey thing. I thought Lisa being so mean to bart was kind of out of character. Anyone notice Richards hair was weird in the begging of the episode.

If anyone wonders, and doesn't know, the song was the Simpson family was playing was Tijuana Taxi by Herb Alpert.

  21. #21

Was that the second Herb Alpert song they've had on the show?

I know that in The Otto Show (ba dum bum pshhhhh) they had The Spanish Flea, but were there any others between these two episodes?

    5/5 excellent episode

favourite joke was probably the sign gag on sprawlmart when it said 'don't watch 60 minutes this week'. i laughed out loud more times than i can ever remember for a new episode in a long while. gary busey was excellent and judge harm was on screen for about 15 seconds tops. just an awesome show

*edit- and how could i forget that couch gag, sheer brilliance. probably the best one i've ever seen imo

Couch gag: I can't tell if it was the worst couch gags ever, or the best. I thought of the one when they broke out in song and dance right away. I knew it would be a short episode. Homer's mouth was way off the line, they probably changed the line from a previous episode.

First act: I really liked the few scenes with grandpa, but the reason Homer and Marge were there wasen't visible. I liked Homer's "welcome lines". "Hi Rabbi Jesus loves ya'! Hehehe, I'm just kidding. I was a bit annoyed by Bart's pranks, they seemed unoriginal and bland, but I guess that's what Westbrook was gunning for.

    Second Act:
In my opinon a much better act. The Gary Busey guide tape was very subtle, yet I found it pretty funny. The montage was a bit funny, though Lisa seemed most out of character in this act. I actually thought this was going to turn into a Willy episode, once Bart had found his new classroom. The short time of Judge Harm was another plus, even after all the talk about how terrible of a character she is. Didn't like Bart getting the injection, it was a quick scene which was obvious filler and seeing holes in his skin was somewhat disgusting.

Third Act: I liked this act, a bit better than the first mostly because Lisa seemed a bit back in character. The scene with Homer being locked in was seemingly pointless, but I still thought the "brain damage-damage-damage" line was a pretty funny one. The ending was good, but I didn't like the whole explanation that Bart slapped on. On the contrary, I liked Lisa burning her statue. It seemed like a rewarding ending, but the call back to the musical fell flat for me though if you think about it, it was coming.

Overall: Lisa wasen't too out of character, Busey scene was good, and Judge Harm didn't get much time. A very good episode. 4/5.

This was a fine episode. I liked how Sprawl Mart was accompanied with three different subtitles:

    "Not a parody of Wal-Mart"
"Don't watch 60 Minutes this week"
"If you're still working here, you'd be poor now"

Also, I laughed at the part where Chief Wiggum put Lou in jail just for making cold coffee.

Wow, that was great! I wasn't expecting it to be very good, but it was hilarious and way more well plotted than I expected. Also, it's nice that Skinner and Krabapel's relationship is actually making some good callbacks, like in "Sleeping With the Enemy". Homer's job as a Sprawl Mart greeter was handled much more well than I expected, and it had several of the best jokes in the episode (and the sign gags were all great).

This episode is one of the better episodes of the season.

There were some great jokes in first act. I liked Bart using normal kids’ tricks like trip/fall line. That made it better when Lisa got the restraining order because Bart’s side was more sympathetic than it would have been had done something bigger. The field trip angle was good, it was something that was used regularly in the classic era, but not in resent years. It was great to see Uter again. The Mrs. K-Skinner jokes were funny at the beginning, but got tiresome quickly. The WalMart jokes weren’t as subtle as I would have liked, but they still worked.

The restraining order plot kicked in fairly early in the episode, this is better than what happened in the past few episodes where the main storyline got pushed to the end and felt rushed. The video was ok. Lisa acting like the asshole was a good angle as I said before it makes us relate to Bart. The jokes about Bart at school were funny especially having to be taught by Willie. Judge Harm taking the super strict angle yet again was another example of why I hate her.

Homer’s getting electrocuted was tiresome and annoying. Having him steal from the store at the end was inevitable but I liked it. I’ve always liked all music sequences and Bart out in the wild no exception. The flashback was great, but once again the joke went on too long. Marge wanting to keep her family together and her getting Lisa to drop the restraining order was expected and worked. The ending didn’t quite work and wasn’t as emotional as I would have liked. I would have expected this if it weren’t for Millhouse Doesn’t Live Here Anymore which had a better conclusion to the Bart-Lisa relationship.

21 posts in 7 minutes? Man, I think this is the first time I posted right after a new episode aired... didn't think there'd be this much activity...

Anyway, I liked the episode, which means I'm not really complaining. The first act was the best; I loved Bart's "Have a nice trip? See you next fall" line and the repetition joke. The TV-in-a-TV-in-a-TV was also classic (the restraining order videotape), and so was "Homer Sanchez".

I was expecting a very good episode and that is what I got. Bart and Lisa were characterized perfectly, but unfortunately Homer was back to his jerkass antics after only a brief glimpse of the Homer I like. And the whole subplot didn't seem to have any point for me. Would be a 5/5 if not for the subplot, instead I'm making it 4/5.

DYN: Bart's effigy of Lisa has 4 "twigs" per "arm", like Lisa has 4 digits per arm?
Bart: "Please don't call our parents!"
Chief: "I'm afraid I have to for hijinks like these. Hijinks - it's a funny word. Three dotted letters in a row."
    Eddie: "Is it hyphenated?"
Chief: "It used to be, back in the good old days, you know. Of course, every generation hyphenates the way it wants to. Then there's *NSYNC! What the hell is that? Jump in any time there, Eddie, these are good topics."

I actually think Homer was characterized much better than Lisa in this one.
