I was thinking the same thing. The same thing goes on over at MT2 (MultiTalk2). People either give every episode anything above a B, or say "I don't like it" but still give it a fairly good grade.

I think it's a very good and funny episode that got wackier during the 3rd act, which of course is nothing bad in this case. There is so many funny things in the episode, like the opening dream scene, Homer's "My first day" excuse, Barney's disturbing poster and his lookalike mom in the navy, Homer's cola can hat, "I'm a freak!" and the "don't fire the torpedo, fire the torpedo" scene (which always manage to make me laugh) and Homer calling Moe "Mr. Moe" was also quite funny. The end with the family walking off towards the sunset was a nic eending to this wacky episode, so overall, this is one of the funniest episodes from Season 9.

One of my favorite parts in the entire series of The Simpsons was at the end when Homer talked in the different languages to the different countries, and he turns to the penguins and goes "quack quack quack." For some reason I thought that was so randomly funny.

Overall the episode isn't bad, 8/10 from what I remember. I just found that one quote really funny.

Anyway, I think I'll give this episode a 5/5. It really captured the dim-witted Homer characterization that didn't make him seem like a jerkass. All of Homer's back-and-forths with the officer were great. "Maybe you would like me if you got to know me" was hilarious, along with "'It's pronounced 'nuc-u-lar'." I think my favorite part of the episode was this dialog between Tenille and Homer:

Homer: I want peas!
Tenille: We all want peace! But it's always just out of reach.
Homer: Uh huh?
Tenille: So, what's the best way to get peace?
Homer: With the knife!
Tenille: Exactly! Not with the olive branch, but the bayonet! Ha, ha,
Simpson, you're like the son I never had.
Homer: And you're like the father I never visit.

Bart's subplot was equally as funny (I don't even know why I love Bart's "sparkle! sparkle!" line but I do) and the two plots actually intersected at the end when Homer saved the crew using the earring.

The episode was really wacky but it worked out perfectly because it had a Mirkin-era wackiness to it with some heart. The Simpsons could use more endings like the sunset one.

Bingo. It's a pretty ridiculous plot, but it doesn't become stupid at any point. In fact, it remains wildly funny throughout and is one of Season 9's best episodes.

I've just noticed that people have been calling this episode part of the Suclly era. Yes it does appear in season 9, BUT, it is a Jean-Reiss episode. And was produced round about season 7 time. But not aired till season 9. This therefore suggest that Scully had nothing to do with the running of this episode at all. In fact, Bill and Josh would've most likely had more to do with it than Scully, as it was produced around about season 7 time.
Anyway enough of my nerdy ranting. I really like this episdoe! Possibly one of the last greats. 4/5. A bit wacky towards the end though. Still, v enjoyable.

i liked it, but as i said in a different R@R thread, it seems every season has at least one or two episodes that tries harder to be funnier. This is season 9's. This episode has a whole lot of jokes and references {i loved the Village People}, but the jokes seem to come more force then the plot, at least to me.

Firstly, a great couch gag, one of my favourites

Last episode showran by Al Jean partnered with Mike Reiss, but defintely not one of the best ones IMO. Ironcally, though this is a Scully season, this might well be the wackiest of the season. The opening scene sets the episode up perfectly, with a wacky dream sequence. Everything after that is wacky: radiation scene, Homer's whale sounds, Lenin coming back from the dead, S.S Antarctica, Barney's mom. And perhaps it's a bit too wacky. That's not to say the episode doesn't have it's funny moments. 'In The Navy', Grampa's interview are particularly funny.

Not one of the better Season 9 episodes, but not dreadful either. 6/10

Weird couchgag, strange beginning with The Planet of the Donuts, a quick rush in story development just to get Homer and his friends in the navy, followed by Homer making a blitz-career, humans used as torpedoes, penguins with an own ship, Barney's mom, Barney's poster of sexy Homer...

Except for the opening donut dream sequence I've never had much love for this episode, it doesn't engage me (I really don't like any submarine-based stories strangely), however now that I remember I do like Homer making whale noises and the references to Soviet Union and the Cold War 2/5

Disturbingly funny... but yeah I would agree that a lot of nutty stuff went down in this episode. Homer being able to talk to Penguins for example. I just read on wikipedia that Mike Reiss felt the whole Russia returning back to Soviet Union was the nuttiest the show has ever been.
