    Rate & Review: Simpson Tide

    Simpson Tide (#3G04 / SI-828) ** 29 Mar 1998
Bored as usual, Homer decides to take up a new career in the Navy, where he single-handedly cuts the ribbon on treason season by charting a submarine into soviet waters. Meanwhile, Bart gets his ear pierced. Guest starring Bob Denver, Rod Steiger as Captain Tenille, and Michael Carrington.

The best episode of the 9th season and one of the best The Simpsons has ever seen. This is my personal favourite. Its very funny. I (unfortunately) haven't seen it in a while. I like Apu and the sigarette scene (although I think it was kind of pointless to have him join the navy.) Rod Steiger is excellent as the captain and I wish Bob Denver had been used more. ALl in all, a great episode!

    Sparkle sparkle!
    BART!

    A++

It's somewhere between an A- and a B+ (I voted 4/5). It's a funny episode, especially with that wonderful navy plot. And the captain was just too funny.

I voted 3/5 but I want 4/5 because I didn't read the summary and I thought it was a different episode than it really was. I realized what episode it was after I read the summary.

One of the best "super wacky" episodes from the Scully era. When it first aired, I thought it was a little over the top, but in comparison to what the show has done since, it's kind of tame. I love this one, I'll give it a 5/5. Sparkle Sparkle!

5/5, a fantastic episode...though others may not share my view. as i'm a bigger fan of any of the simpsons episodes before season 11 started.

anyways, this episode kept me laughing through most of it. a classic bart quote emerged "sparkle, sparkle", and it got away with a couple of off-the-wall jokes. such as:
    "what would the captain do?"
    - dont fire the torpedoes!
    "Fire the torpedoes!"
"sir, we've been hit with an officer!"

or, when homer started talking with all the navy boats including the s.s. antartica that was full of penguins.

"what do you want in life simpson?"
    - i want peas!
"yes but how do we get peace"
    - with a knife!

    ..i love it..

Can someone remind me of the "sparkle sparkle" line?

  10. #10

Bart gets an earing, and when he shows Homer, he says "Sparkle sparkle!" and Homer gets mad and eventually takes the ring. Later on, Homer is having a flashback of his family because he thinks he's going to die (because of a hole in the sub) and the Bart in his thoughts says "Sparkle sparkle" and Homer gets mad, but the envisioned Bart points out that Homer stole his ear ring and has it in his pocket. So, Homer plugs a hole in the sub and he's saved! Good intermingling of the plots there.

This is a good episode. I don't think that it is anything special, it is funny but lacks anything else. Nothing really stands out. C+

I liked it for the Cold War references, e.g.
    1. Franken-Lenin: "GRRRRRR! GRRRRRR! Must. Destroy. Capitalism!"
    2. The picture of Homer dressed as a cossack while dancing and holding a bottle of vodka in Red Square.
    3. Russian UN man: The Soviet Union will of course offer refuge for your wayward crew.
American UN Man: Soviet Union? We thought you gys broke up!
Russian UN Man: That's waht we wanted you to think! Mwhahahaha!

A little kooky for my tastes.

    But a good Homer-centric episode.

Come on, Dad, didn't you ever do anything wild when you were a kid?

Well, when I was ten I got my ear pierced...but this is completely different!
    I was saying "Boo-urns."

I really liked this episode. It felt it seemed like an episode that could appear in the current Jean seasons (17-18). I like the jokes, but the B-Story was kind of weak, until it caught up with the A-Story. Its a good Homer-getting-a-new-job-and-then-screwing-it-up-when-he-was-trying-to-help episode and at that time it was fairly new. Great episode 4/5

It has its moments, but there are way too many cringe-jokes. Average.

5/5 Simpson Tide is magnificent. It's another reason why I call season 9 a classic season.

Brilliant, the rise of The Soviet Union is one my favorite scenes ever. "Must crush capitalism. Must crush capitalism."

5/5, brilliant episode. One of my all-time favourite episodes.

Barney: The compartment is filling with a clear non-alcoholic liquid
    Homer: You mean water?
    Barney: Yeah, that's the one.

    Classic

I don't know how to describe this episode, but this is bit overrated, but still very fun. Some things were very wacky (Russia re-forming as Soviet Union), and General putting Homer on charge didn't really make sense. But the other features of plot was good with great humors. ("Fire!-Not me! The torpedoe!")

    Da Good:

+Do the Bartman performance by Bart

+The connection of plot and sub-plot

    +The navy song scene.

    +Grampas: "... but he's not a porn star!"

    +The Land Of Donuts

    Da bad:

    -Typical Scully wackiness

-Plot wasn't really realistic as other good episodes

    Overall grade: 4.5/5, A-/A.
    calmer than you are
