Rate and Review "A Streetcar Named Marge"

    Day 2, Episode 2!

Another classic, with great musical numbers, and some great Homer, Marge, Maggie and Ned moments. Lovitz' character was great too. A+

Damn good episode. Great take on the Marge/Homer relationship, terrific parody of The Great Escape, and all around top-notch humour. The musical numbers were a ball, especially the oh-so-infamous ditty about New Orleans. A+

Having studied the Tennessee Williams play that Marge appears in, I found this a very interesting episode. It can get boring at times if you haven't really seen the play or movie, but the parodies, especially The Great Escape really make this episode stand out as one of the best. Not the funniest episode of all, and can be dull in parts when there is no action, but otherwise brilliant stuff.

Absolutely perfect, easily a top 5 episode (and I've never seen or read "A Streetcar Named Desire", though I have pieced it together from this and other things). Characterization was great, the musical was excellent, great use of the supporting cast, Maggie's B-plot was very entertaining and the main plot was well constructed, with the Homer/Marge conflict never seeming forced or contrived. Just...A+

Haven't seen this one in so long; season 4 hasn't arrived in the mail yet (yeah, I know, this is the hundredth time I've said it). But, here's a review based on how well I remember it (it's actually rather memorable):

You know, for an episode that has half of its plot derived from "A Streetcar Named Desire", this one is surprisingly unique in its own little way. The thing that I enjoy the most is how a sort of unrelatable theme of your wife starring in a play is put into perspective and made relatable. I mean, no matter how many parodies you have or how extravagent the plot is (which it really isn't), the underlying theme is that Homer and Marge are basically on two different planets. This is the conflict all the way until the end. Then, in the last scene, Homer makes up with Marge. This is in no way a ten-second resolution, because Homer had a real reason to aplogize for his actions: and that was the play. What I'm trying to say is that two totally different themes tie in in the end. Besides that, there were also great parodies of movies ("The Birds" comes to mind) and of the play itself, "A Streetcar Named Desire" (Homer yelling "Marge!"). This is also simply an enjoyable episode. A+

#3 of all time for me. Lovitz's best work on the show, a great phony musical, the best use of Maggie, tons of humor and heart. A no-brainer 5.

Didn't watch it on Season 4 DVD; saw it on the VHS tape when I bought the best of that season and it didn't impress me that much. Not enough humor in it. 2/5

Great, great episode. The musical portion was great and the Homer/Marge conflict was done well, tied in with the Streetcar Named Desire storyline. The musical portion was done well too. Lovitz did another great character. Gotta love the little side story with Maggie. Although i pretty much love any Maggie appearance, especially some of her earlier ones. A+, my fifth favorite episode of all time.

EDIT: Did i mention the musical portion was good as well?

Grade: A+. I would say this is the best musical-themed episode the show has ever done. Song parodies of "A Streetcar Named Desire" were done really well, it featured some great dialogue, especially the exchanges between Marge and Flanders during the play itself (Kavner and Shearer were especially outstanding in this episode). The moments with Maggie at the day care center was a cute addition to it, not to mention Lovitz was great as usual (DVD commentary with him was probably the funniest Simpsons DVD commentary I've ever seen). Very well put together episode.

    Brilliant episode. It has everything.
I loved the parodies. Great Escape, Streetcar, The Birds.
And top it all off with nice musical number at the end.

The only trouble was that some of the play got a bit boring, but nevertheless, a very good episode, with great Maggie moments. A-

Not the funniest episode, but it does have some good humor, as well as emotion and homages. The best musical episode. 5/5, A

After re-watching this I change my grade from a 3/5 to a 4.5/5. The episode it isn't that funny but it is still overall a good episode.

Absolutely classic. The writing is incredibley clever, which is much harder to do than humor thats simply "random" which we've seen so much of in recent years. A+

Squishee Lady, nice Sig signs there.

As for the episode, what can be said. Perfection, maybe? The only thing that diminishes it could be that Homer the Heretic came the following week, which somehow managed to eclipse this one. This season was about triumphs built upon triumphs. A+

3/5 Thats right, i'm a heathan. Used to think the epsiode was classic, but coming back to it this week, was very underhelmed. I get it, the songs are ironicly bad and miss the point, but they go on forever. Also the first act really dragged. The "i'm living in a coo-coo clock!" scene felt right out of sitcom textbook. Lovitz is a show-stealer as always though.

I reviewed this ep, and I've come to the conclusion of 5/5, despite it's inferiority to Marge vs. The Monorail. I realized this is indeed not a comparison, but a singular review, and I cannot deny it's brilliance. Flanders bottle smashing was hilarious (having seen Tennessee's Streetcar).

This was one of the greatest takes on the Homer/Marge relationship and one of the best character peices the show has done, presenting a unique and clever comparison to the plot of "Streetcar". On top of all that its also one of the funniest episodes ever; every scene at the Ayn Rand school for Tots, the "New Orleans" song, the clever movie references (The Birds, Citizen Kane, etc), all so well crafted with a great Jon Lovitz guest spot to boot. Top twenty. A+
Two eyes, two ears, a chin, a mouth, ten fingers, two nipples, a butt, two kneecaps, a penis. I've just described to you the Loch Ness Monster. And the reward for its capture? All the riches in Scotland. So I have one question: why are you here?

4/5. Very good but I don't know if it was one of the better Season 4 episodes.

Can't believe how pissed New Orleans got over that song.

Despite probably not catching many of the parodies and references in this episode, it's still deserves its spot on my, and everyone's "Top # Episodes" list. This was a well done episode that explored Homer and Marge's marriage. The Maggie finding the pacifiers subplot is a classic as well. And the musical at the end is among the best Simpsons musicals ever. (Which is sayiong much, since most of them are very good.)

4/5. Upped my rating upon rewatching it recently - much better than I remember it.

I'd say this episode is mighty overrated. The Homer/Marge relationship had to be beaten down a bit to serve the purposes of the episode, but I didn't like watching Marge being so beaten down. But, still, good moments in this ep, like "I'm living in a cuckoo clock!" and pretty much everything Lovitz did ("The review 'Play Enjoyed by ALL' speaks for itself")
    Grade: 4/5
...oh, oops. I voted for '3/5.' For a second, I thought this was "Kamp Krusty."
