Hope it's okay with everyone that I prefer to post my thoughts than just assign a rating.
More catching up with Tivo'ed syndication:
The Old Man and the Key - Watched for the first time. A pretty mediocre episode, with a lot of gags that misfire but a few that worked for me. A love story with Grampa worked in the 5th season, and the plot was okay for the first half, but it seems kinda pointless for the second half to be based on Grampa going to Branson just so he can call Zelda a hoochie. But meh, whatever. C
The Sweetest Apu - This episode's structure is really quite bizarre for a Simpsons episode. All the stupid, wacky stuff happens in the first act (the Civil War reenactment scenes were really lame), and the third act is the funniest part of the episode. The way Manjula deals with the situation could have been written better emotionally, but I still found those scenes very funny. For an episode that features a normally lovable character cheating on his wife, this one could have left a really sour taste in my mouth, but I enjoyed it, and I give the episode props for that. B-/C+
Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge - Still quite good, though I remembered this as an A quality episode, but after this rewatch I only liked it enough to give it a B+/B.
Dude, Where's My Ranch? - Rewatched because I remembered absolutely nothing about the second and third acts. Perhaps because the second and third acts are the Simpsons at its most boring and cookie-cutter. The Simpsons are going somewhere, Lisa gets angsty, Homer does something wacky, and the climax is a scene where someone must be rescued from a body of water, by clever means. God I'm sick of those water-rescue climaxes. Anyway, Lisa's plot is very tedious, and while Homer is almost always good for a cheap laugh, here his subplot contains no jokes. The first act is the only mildly clever part of the episode, and even that section has some pretty weak moments; during the last two-thirds, I laughed once (at Cookie's antics), and then felt dumb for laughing. D, but without the first third, it would probably be an F.
Old Yeller-Belly - Watched for the first time. So parts of this episode make no sense, sure (I don't understand how Homer's "I have no dog" statement should matter at all in determining the dog’s owner), but I actually like where much of this plot goes. Homer's fickle attitude towards his pets was funny, and it was great to see Duffman in a fairly large role. On top of that, it actually made me laugh quite a lot. On the other hand, it ended with ANOTHER water rescue climax. Urge to kill... rising... B-/C+
Moe Baby Blues - The best episode of the Jean era, and really up there with the best of all-time. It works very well on an emotional level, and quite frankly, it's also hilarious. You could quibble about a few of the jokes, but really, I have no complaints. A+
Don’t Fear the Roofer – Watched for the first time. This is a pretty well-plotted episode with many good jokes and a few huge laughs (I love Homer sitting on Lenny’s cake). However, I’ll never realize why the Simpsons writers think that giving a character repeated painful electric shocks is hilarious. Overall a very good, solid episode. B+
