One thing wrong with this episode, was the inconsistency with Grampa's story. Did they forget that in season seven, the story was told about the Flying Hellfish, and Abe being a Sargent in the Army during WWII? Other than this inconsistency, I enjoyed this.

That little piano piece that they play throughout this episode is really good and ominous

A lot of self-referential stuff and Homer at his most sensitive
when he feels the hate towards this character in which he invested all his energy.
I felt the Poochie-voiceacting was one of the few jobs he was really attached to.

I heard some criticism about the plot here at the NHC, but I think the setup is actually quite ok as well as the motive. One point of criticism: Bart is a little bit too deductive. It would be more believable if Lisa came up with the arguments and the clues.
From a visual point of view, I can only say this: great use of shadowing and a Silverman-directed episode in the early years guarantees fluid and expressive face-animation.
Just look at Krusty's scenes. Masterful!
