Good episode providing a nice look at how Bart doesn't hate the Flanders and is a nice kid overall. The scene with Lisa teaching Bart was great and followed both their characters well. And jerkass Homer helped the plot but I would have hoped it had ended with Homer being nice to Flanders like in When Flanders failed other than him remaining a jerk. A-

Behind Homer loves Flanders my favourite flanders family episode
"Look, Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And i'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth! Because when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo, that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it, Marge. It's Chinatown!" - Homer's rant.

I love this episode. With them wearing dresses at the end, the competitive mindset, the hilarious letter that Flanders wrote (that even Marge laughed at!) and of course the ending was perfect. Defintiely a 5/5

I guess this is sort of historic in defining Homer's hatred for Flanders, but I never really liked this episode, mainly because Homer was a big jerk for most of it, in a way that just didn't work very well. It sounded like Dan wasn't sure of both how to do the voice acting, or why the hell he was doing it in the first place, and I certainly don't blame him. I did like the interaction between Bart and Lisa though, and there were a couple of jokes that were pretty brilliant, like Marge rebuking Homer for laughing at Ned's letter before running out of the room and laughing herself, and the bit at the end with the dresses. 3/5

Is it just me or is it that the point of views of the episode of this community changed over time... anyway, I never really understood why the episode really deserves something of top 10 spot or anything like that, but it is very important episode since it set up for Homer/Flanders animosity (and a Flanders/Lovejoy thing, which we don't see alot lately). Bart and Lisa being in philosophical state was, gotta admit, interesting. Humor... well.... since some of the old-timers of this board counts off the humor a lot (wink wink) I guess I can--screw that, I really found the humor lacking (except for the ending) and it did bore me at times. Like TFD said, the episode lacked a knockout punch that would make it as a perfection.

    Overall: B+/A- or 4/5

Gotta admit, it's not one of my favorites. Homer was angry the whole episode, which was pretty iffy--sometimes it was funny, sometimes it seemed like a prelude to Jerkass Homer. Also, the training was a good idea but went on for far too long. On the plus side, it introduced us fully to the Flanders family, the ending was hilarious, the golf course animation was very good, and some Homer stuff was funny. This is a really hard episode for me to rate, but I finally settled at 11/15

Don't get me wrong, it's good, but I don't like episodes with "moralistic" endings. (This one, Lisa on Ice, Separate Vocations, etc.) I want to see actual results, instead of being disappointed all the time.

^ So moralism can never equal 'actual results?' Additionally, did it ever occur that perhaps this wasn't just moralism for the sake of it, but was intended to lead to a humorous ending. It was hardly meant to be taken seriously.

I was way off the mark on this one, this is a hilarious episode! I find Homer much funnier now, and find it very amusing that he's just angry the whole episode! What was wrong with me before? Still doesn't get my top grade, but now gets a very good 14/15

Entertaining, but fairly standard stuff in a way. I do like it for sure, but I don't think it quite lives up to excellent or really great episodes. 3/5

I love this episode! For me it's in the top ten best episodes of all time! Especially first 10 minutes - It's makes me laugh every single time!

For me this was thee episode when Flanders trully came to life as a character! (preview apperances where almost cameos)

I don't get how people today complain about how bigger jerk Homer beacome - in this episode his as big of a jerk as it can get. But thats what so funny about it! I love how Flanders is sympathethic all the time and he just take evry thing as a insult.
The part when they read the letter must be my favorite part of the episode!

Over all - fantastic episode! Ten stars!

One of the episodes I've the most underrated. 4.5/5

    Very good, 4/5 or 8.5/10

Without a doubt, Season 2 is the most underated Simpsons season ever, just ahead of Season 1...

Excellent episode: another classic. This one defined Homer and Ned Flanders' rivalry, and it's quite funny, with humor always arising from the characters and their motivations (the best kind of humor, in my opinion). Some nice Bart-Lisa bonding too. Excellent characterization throughout (except for Lisa joining in the mocking of Flanders' reconciliation letter: she's supposed to be more sensitive than that... I loved Marge's reaction there, though. She scolded the rest for laughing but then she went to the kitchen and laughed too where no one could see her). Excellent plot, with the adults dragging their sons into their silly rivalry, through a mini-golf tournament for children.

    Rating: A

I rewatched this episode Tonight for the first time in years, and although still much an funny episode, with plenty of nice gags, I was appalled how bitter and a jerk Homer was in this episode, not only with Flanders, but more disturbingly all the pressure and cruel jibes he puts on Bart into defeating Todd at Mini Golf.

Don't blame Bart for being a bit of a disturbed child with such a warped father.

3.5/5 (used to be 5, but yeah Homer's jackass behavior has somewhat tarred this episode for me)

Will you stop taking out points out of Episodes for Homer being a Jerk.He cant fucking remain the same character every episode...that wouldnt be realistic.Taking 1.5 Points for Jerkass Homer alone is Stupid as hell

taking points off an episode when lisa isn't a "strong" character is perfectly reasonable though, right?

I always seemed to flip-flop on whether or not I liked this episode, and I think I finally figured out why. It's such a different Homer than there was prior to this episode. It's a real shock, and he annoys me at times in this. I have trouble differentiating between just regular angry Homer and Jerkass Homer. I'm still not entirely sure.
