Why the Simpsons is still a great show

    This is my first post.

I watch a new Sunday episode and I will it be 'so so' in my opinion, but when they aire it in syndication I seem to find new jokes or remember stuff that occured but forgot about and I will have a good time. In short the Simpsons have great replay value.

Just tonight I watched last season episode with Bart and Lisa being in the same grade. Classic and funny. The scene about the Volkswagen Beetle Punch game had me cracking up. Another episode titled I initially loathed was "Principal and the Pauper", but has they re-ran that show it got funnier for some reason.

    Just my 2 cents were.

Episodes get better or worse each time I watch them so I don't judge an episode too harshly until I see it twice. Anyways welcome to the boards.

I wouldn't agree with you about the classic bit or Beetle Punch, but you are entitled to your own opinion.

    Welcome to the Boards.

I have to agree with you TJM80. I have watched seasons 1-3 countless times over and have ruined VHS cassettes watching taped shows over and over. I can always notice something new and funny in each episode.

That's the best thing about the show. One viewing is never enough to fully appreciate an episode. Even the worst episodes will have something in them to keep a viewer interested the second time round.

Although some episode with alot of In your face humour can tire after a while because the joke is so predictable, Sometimes even in the first viewing.

The great thing about the show is that every time you watch an episode, you nearly alway findsomething new tto laugh at.

Yes. Simpson reruns are great, as you can see stuff you've never seen before, and whatever.

You don't have to tell me. I have every episode on tape and watch them constantly.

That's the beauty of the show. It never gets old.

actually I didn't think Bart vs Lisa vs 3rd Grade was too bad (like, C+ or something) on first airing, but I watched it again and realised it was fairly horrible.

usually my opinions on episodes rarely change drastically on subsequent viewings though.

    Welcome.

Yes, I often have to watch an ep twice or more to get a true grade.

I could watch some episodes over and over and over again and not get sick of them. Also, yes, I can find new things in each viewing. I often have to watch an episode a couple of times to get a grade for it, because a lot of it I had forgotten. The rewatchability of The Simpsons is what makes it so great.

    Welcome to the show, TJM80!

These subtle jokes can be fun to find, and the old jokes are what makes people come back and watch the episodes multiple times. Rewatchability is just one of hundreds of things that make the Simpsons great, and this is a vital feature for shows that have reruns shown as frequently as this one does. I do alter grades and things when I see episodes many times to allow every single aspect to seep into my mind to be analyzed.

its great because i grew up with the show and now going back to watch old episodes i understand more jokes now.

same here. I saw it a few days ago in syndication and thought "Why did I like this episode the first time I saw it?". After thinking about it I realized that I wanted the episode to be good because of the extememly high expectations and I convienced myself that the episode was good after first viewing. After watching it a few more times, it's got to be one of the worst of Season 14.

My mind is rarely changed after watching an episode more than once, but it has happened. And if an episode sucks, then it sucks, no matter how many times I see it.

"The Simpsons" isn't any better to re-watch than most any other show. It's just that there's so fucking many episodes that you will have about ten or more episodes in-between viewings or just a long chunk of time between them that makes you forget almost everything. South Park and other quality shows are just as re-watchable, just they suffer from being repeated more often. That being said... great fun to re-watch Simpsons episodes.

Not true at all. I've recorded and watched the same episode multiple times and enjoyed it more each time. I've never been able to do that with another show.

While not as bad as seasons 10-11... I found a lot of my favorite eps from 14and 13, to not be as great the second time around... which is to not say that they are better then most network television... After a while though, and its already started, the show will become Metaphysical, and eventually become the joke itself... Which I still think has potential. I am looking forward to the direction the show will take in the next 1-2 years.

Just to prove that I am not bashing the show, I will be that dork that will even buy season 11 in 1210...

You are right. There is stuff that you miss initially and it takes multiple viewings for you to catch it.

However, most episodes I hate, I've always hated and most episodes I like, I've always liked. I've never understood how someone can hate an episode, watch it again, and then like it. That has never happened to me. It was either funny or it wasn't, the jokes either work or they do not.
"Look, Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And I'm not out of order. You're out of order! The whole freakin' system is out of order! You want the truth? You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! 'Cause when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it, Marge! It's Chinatown." -- Homer Simpson

I used to work weekends, at a job where I would have ridiculous amounts of downtime (and no boss breathing down my neck) and I managed to watch all the seasons from beginning to end. There is a lot to be said about the time that lapses between seasons when you watch them consecutively. By the time you get to Season 5-6, Season 1-2 gets fresh again.

I still think the "re-watchability" speaks for itself in that I still catch things I never noticed before.

I may be just a little odd, but things like that are f'n cool.
