This had so much potential to be great but they frittered it away. There were some nice moments, for example, Homer saying "Oh, I'll never let that happen" actually felt like a nice way to end the act, as I felt it would make Homer sweeter and more understanding and sweet throughout the rest of the episode, sorta justifying his jerkiness, alas though, it did not. Homer remained fairly intolerable a lot of the time. Bart too, was too much of a brat. What's even more stupid is that they completely ignore the conflict created initially (Homer and Lisa aren't alike), putting Homer in the wrong, then they flip it around and suddenly make the conflict "Lisa doesn't appreciate Homer" -which makes next to no sense in relation to the plot - and make Lisa apologise, which really ruined the episode further. It all just becomes very weird with the sensory deprivation thing being buried and what not, when this episode could have been a great emotional one. Some scenes were funny though, admittedly ("watch out you'll pop it""I'm just saying I can get through life without a tooth-BRUSH"), but it didn't save the episode from feeling very odd and well, off.

    C-

After Lisa the Simpsons and Lost Our Lisa, it seemed the one thing the show could still do was a relationship between Homer, and of course, Lisa. However, this POS ruined it. Another boring, annoying, and overall tedious affair. 2/5. Starting to lose my love for season 10.

C'mon Handsome B. Wonderful, the table crying scene was tedious, but it was a good display of emotion. However, I agree, the gravestones predicting the deaths of the celebrities was just creepy.

Oh wait, I'm thinking of Dead Bart. Oh man, with these episodes, you can barely tell the difference.

You're all entitled to your opinion, but to me, season 10 is a rather mediocre season that doesn't deserve to be grouped in anywhere near the classics.

And you'd have to be already drunk to enjoy it, plus once you put on your S10 goggles, S15 looks gooooood.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

I just rewatched this episode for the first time in awhile. I remember loving it, but I didn't love it this time. The criticisms in the thread are true, and I think the ending was just very effective in such a way that I remembered it fondly and thus assumed the whole thing was good. There's also no sense of resolution, with both the tower and roommate Bart whose scene annoying Lisa is a bit of throwaway.

I think that because of my age I was most aware of The Simpsons during the Scully era, so my brain thinks of his episodes as quite good, especially since the show was syndicated at the time so I didn't know the difference between pre-Scully & Scully episodes and assumed they were all run by the same people. But now I'm thinking Scully & Jean average about the same in having genuinely strong episodes (a very very low average).

    The ending is very forced.

A ten year old (i.e. me at the time) generally doesn't discern that well between a forced ending that doesn't really go well with the episode as a whole, and an ending that warms the cockles of the heart because, hey, Homer/Lisa are together and happy when they were previously in conflict.

Quoting a review from the always reliable meblogwritegood.

"The point is that Homer is absolutely reprehensible for the entire episode and gets no comeuppance and learns nothing, and we’re given an ending of them reconciled and supposed to go “aww” on cue like Homer-Lisa shows in the past. Well those endings only worked when they were earned, and this time, it is absolutely not earned. Fuck this shit."

    Just for the record.

    Pretty much sums it up.
