Lisa Lionheart ep - Marge to Lisa, you're not going to throw red paint at the executives are you? the keebler people are very upset? and also Seven Signs of evil shit on the radio in Itchy and Scratchy land ep. And when Principal Skinner says Mother that sailor suit doesn't fit anymore... its a ref to psycho with the house on the hill and his mother looking out... ie his delusions. But then, what does the sailor suit mean? Its not in the movie is it?

Moe: What are you telling us, were trapped like rats?

Russ Cargill: No, rats can't be trapped this easily, you're trapped like... carrots.

    1) "Throwing red paint" is a popular technique for protesting the sale & use of fur products (it thrown usually at wearers of fur, but executives of companies that sell it too. The absurdist twist is that "The Keebler people" are in the business of making cookies & crackers (The "Keebler Elves" are their msscots.)

    2) the various "Signs of Evil" is a combined parody of the Top Ten (or 25, or 50, or 100,) countdowns of "hit songs" that fill up radio programs & playlists, and the ultra-religious (mostly AM) Christian radio stations that one notices when one drives through underpopulated areas of the rural US (on a cross-country trip, for example), and one can't find anything else on the dial.

    3) Making Seymour wear a "sailor suit" clearly meant for a child is just another way tht overbearing, domineering Agnes likes to keep her son from feeling like a grown man. (No, its not in "Psycho", but its fairly close to a scene in "Mommie Dearest," another story (memoir, then movie,)of a domineering, abusive mother & her child.

I can understand how it wouldn't make sense across the pond. Archie comics aren't available in the UK or Europe. To these people, it's weird, confusing and ruins the episode as a whole. I'm not bitching about this because the programme is intended for Americans or those in North America, or those who are familiar with American culture, the show's merely sold on to other countries.

When Homer turns off the tv when Bart and Lisa are watching the I&S cartoon they yell what sounds like DAD! V CHIP V CHIP! please explain. The house looked like it was from psycho... maybe a combo of the two. Maybe the Keeblers made animal crackers lmao, I know that its meant to be satire, and cookies are harmless, just adding my own stupid slant.

The TV had shut off apparently because its V-Chip had kicked in, and that's why the kids were screaming that, so Homer could override it and turn I&S back on.

The V-Chip is the slang term for the parental control processor that the US government required be installed on every TV manufactured after some year in the mid-nineties. It allows parents to select which programs kids can watch based on the FCC's TV content ratings (i.e. TV-G, TV-PG, TV-MA).

Is Homer's "Yo, Goober where's the meat?" line in Lisa the Vegetarian a parody of anything, Or does it mean anything?

  8. #218

Brooke, the house WAS from "Psycho"; the sailor suit was not, which is what you asked. You have a terrible habit of asking a question, and then, after someone answers it, posting again in such a way as to "prove" that you didn't really "need" to ask it. Cut that out. Just ask the damn questions.

"yo, Goober, where's the meat?" wasn't a parody of anything directly, just Homer's attempt at mild sarcasm. [Unless you want to analyze "Goober", which is either a reference to the chocolate-covered peanut candy, or to Gomer Pyle's hick cousin Goober (George Lindsey), who "replaced" Gomer at the filling station on "The Andy Griffith Show" hwen Pyle got his own spin-off "Gomer Pyle USMC".]

I thought that "Archie" comics were pretty well exported to the continent in the 1970's, in translated tv shows and comic books where necessary. Disney had led the way in the 1960's, and I remember seeing "batman" tv show & comics, as well as "Caspar" and "Woody Woodpecker" translations, in Latin America, in the late 70's.

I like art a lot, anyone knows the title of the picture is parodied in "Bart Gets an F"? When Patty and Selma pass with the sleigh.

I don't know a lot of "holiday art", but I thought that the montage of "winter festivity scenes" was a collection of popular Norman Rockwell and Dickens illustrations. [But I may not be remembering the exact scene you're asking about.]

    Currier & Ives*

It's actually a very famous lithograph from the famous printmakers of the 1800s. Here's a website dedicated to the firm.

homer says "well it is whats the problem"

and he says "it is and it isnt if you get what i mean".

He's basically saying it's an elephant, but it's not quite what he's looking for. A setup for Homer's next selling point "He likes peanuts!"
    "How could this have happened?
We started out like Romeo & Juliet but it ended up in tragedy..."
    - Milhouse Van Houten

  16. #226

Yes, The man is looking for a different type of elephant than Stampy but Homer well being the below average thinker that he is think all elephants are the same, So basically the joke is just showing Homer's stupidity.

  17. #227

The first line is a standard "opener" in a car transaction that means "I will buy it, but I want to haggle over the price." The second line is another strong indication that he still wants to bargain over the price. The absurd twist is that the man is acting as if its pretty likely that he will find another elephant for sale nearby or soon, as if its a car.

    From "A Star is Burns":

Homer: "I have every right to be on that jury. Even though I got there because I'm sleeping with the head of the festival."
Jay Sherman: "How many times have I heard Rex Reed say that!"

Can someone explain that for me?

  19. #229

Just a catty comment with no verifiable basis in reality.

Though I have to say, that Rex Reed, the critic for the New is well-known as one of the biggest ho's out there - his 'blurbs' are among the most prevalent in those quoted in movie posters & publicity, seemingly regardless to the quality of the film.

I don't get this. I just seen it posted somewhere, I don't know which episode it is from

Lenny: There's nothing on that helicopter for me.
    Carl: Don't be so sure.
    Lenny: Carl Carlson?

In "Half-Decent Proposal", as the fire burns around Lenny and Carl, Artie Ziff's helicopter shows up, and Homer climbs up the rope ladder. Homer says, "C'mon, Lenny, climb up" and Lenny tells him that there's nothing on that helicopter for him, in comparison to the fact that Homer has a loving wife and he doesn't. Then he finds out his beloved best friend is up there, too, so Lenny lovingly declares his name: Carl Carlson.

I don't know the correct episodes but...

Bart calls himself "Cucumber boy, as in smooth as a..." ?

and in 3 Men and a Comic Book he calls the sidekick, "Olive Boy" ?
    Heckling a Puppet show.

  23. #233

It's "as in 'cool as a'". The old expression is "cool as a cucumber."

Is it possible you just misheard "Fallout Boy"?

"And that little boy who nobody liked grew up to be..."

I can't remember the name the guy says on the radio. It's from "Homer's Barbershop Quartet". What's that one about people?

  26. #236

In Simpsons-(Stupid)-Safari what is the joke behind all the animals acting strange e.g. the rino coming out of an egg and the hippos hate water bit. Is it deeper than just stupid craptacular jokes.

The SNPP capsule didn't give an exact quote, but I'm led to believe the radio said Roy Cohn. Couldn't tell you who he was though.

Roy Cohn was a lawyer who was later an assistant for U.S. attorney for subversive activities and then special assistant to the U.S. attorney general. As chief counsel to Senator Joseph McCarthy's Communist-hunting U.S. Senate permanent investigations subcommittee, he was an often celebrated, often denigrated national figure. From 1954 to 1986, he became a political power broker. Three times, he was tried and acquitted on federal charges of conspiracy, bribery, and fraud, he was disbarred two months before his death. All in all, he was rather controversial.

The Simpson Safari jokes about animals acting oddly has no real meaning, but it is rumored that they were written in to spite the viewers who complain about the show being unrealistic.

Just to add to this, the show they're listening to is Paul Harvey's. On Paul Harvey's radio show, he tells the life stories of people without saying who they are to show how difficult their lives were, then says the name at the end to "surprise" the readers with the big-name person who overcame such-and-such adversity. Old people love this show.

You probably misheard it. I'm pretty sure he said "Fallout Boy". It's the only thing that would sound like Oliveboy, since the actor's name was Buddy Hodges (yes, I had to look that one up ).
