This is a pretty lackluster "let's see how many celebrities we can cram in" episode with a weak plot. The premise - Homer realizes he's old and uncool - is interesting but not fully realized. There are some pretty funny moments (Sonic Youth stealing a watermelon from Peter Frampton's cooler, Cypress Hill and the orchestra, the opening with the bus) and great zingers at Generation X's expense, although Bart and Lisa have a severe case of "writer mouthpiece." Even though it's impossible to ignore its datedness, I like that it's very much about its era, which is something that's been lost.

Subpar and surreal for the classic era, but still a number of moments I quite like. High 3/5 or low 4/5, but I'll be generous and go with the latter. If this came out today I would be enthralled with it.

I liked most of the guest stars in this episode, and the teenagers swaying to Smashing Pumpkins' "Zero" made me laugh out loud.

That said, I wasn't too impressed with Bart and Lisa's characterization in this one. I realize that they had to view Homer as uncool for the episode to work, but it just put me off. High 3/5/Low 4/5.

I think I see some signs of the post-classic era coming in this episode -a slightly jerk-assish Homer goes off on a wacky adventure -but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of this episode. The plot was a little thin but was still nevertheless relatively engaging, the characterization was done quite well and there were some good lines. And the underlying themes of the classic era-Homer's relationship with and love for his family -comes through in the story. I'd give this a 4/5

The rock 'n' roll stuff and the jokes on the expense of the Generation Xers were great and I still laugh at a lot of the stuff featured in the episode. It does trail off nearer the end, the Homer and Bart sentiments felt weak and the ending wasn't imaginative at all. 4/5

Maybe it's because I like Sonic Youth and that whole "scene" (ugh), but I find this episode really enjoyable. It's got some great commentary on what's "hip" and Homer was in excellent character. It's also got some great jokes (Dude are you being sarcastic? I don't even know any more). Not a classic but just a really fun episode and I love the ending with the family in the car talking about how to be "cool". B+ maybe higher.

EDIT: Okay, this wasn't as good as I remembered. I pretty much agree with Jamie on this one (apart from Bart and Lisa having a "severe" case of writer's mouthpiece), in that Homer not being cool isn't fully realised, nor is the "Bart looking up to Homer" plot either. A lot of time seems spent on musicians doing their thing, which gives the episode nice, unique vibe, but comes at the expense of a nice thick plot. That said I really like how it tackled something that hasn't been done before, or since, really. As Jamie said it's very much about its era, which almost gives it a nostalgic vibe even though I wasn't there. And whilst a lot of it is somewhat dated there are still elements of the plot that are still relevant and timeless, even today (the conversation at the end). So, even though it's not hugely funny and the plot could have been better, this episode gets a B for its unique vibe and subject matter which makes it almost refreshing to watch, in a way.

Along with 'Bart the Fink' I agree it's the worst of Season 7...hence a 2.5/5 rating is disgracefully injustified. Fun episode, some good jokes and it never got boring. 4/5, 8/10 B+

Solid season 7 episode. Although 90's rock isn't really my scene, I really enjoyed the way the bands were used.

I don't understand the hate towards this episode, and Bart and Lisa's characterization. I thought it was a pretty accurate viewpoint (how many times have you been driving with someone and wanted to rip out their speakers, just so you wouldn't have to listen to their irritating music). It may be harsh, but it's true to life.

Highlights include the sunrise animation, Mississippi Queen, Suicide Notes formerly Good Vibrations, Dazed and Confused reference (quadraphonic sound, a waterbed, and strobe lighting), the "Karma" tip jar, Homer's funky strut, and Cypress Hill with London Symphony Orchestra.

This episode seems to get a lot of hate but I personally love it. Though it remains as one of the weaker episodes of Season 7, it still manages to make me laugh out loud. The only thing I hated was Rover Hendrix but it only lasted for a few seconds so it doesn't entirely affect my score. 5/5 for me.
