I thought the episode overall was pretty good. Loved how they had to use Grandpa just so their scripts would be accepted. There were some weak points, but I would give this episode an 7.75/10.

Okay, I'm not really believing some of the underrated-ness that is shown for this episode. In my opinion, this episode is one of the best of Season 4--and classic era. It had downright hilarious humor (Homer thinking Grampa is a nutjob, 'That's right, I did the Iggy', Grampa's fantasy.. and many others) coupled with two good plots. There were some good satires on the cartoon industry and the pedigrees of writers who, sometimes, make some blunders (such as the writers of the show of--you get the idea).

Deserves A/A+ from me, or 5/5

A great one, a bit self-critical, but very short. After I saw the Adventures of Ned Flanders I asked myself: What the hell was that?

I guess it kind of gets lost in the shuffle at times but it stands out to me as a very enjoyable episode. It's kind of a forerunner to "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie" show in many ways, an early satirical look at the reaction to a show that's been running for a while and spoof of the industry. Some great Grampa stuff throughout as well. 4.5/5 for me.

Overlooked season 4 gem. Although the fact that it came up very short in the length department, caused them to pull out all the gags they could out of both plots.
I find that this is how they're funniest gagfest episodes come to be.

Homer: Marge, I never graduated from high school.
Marge: Well that still doesn't explain why you ate my soap. Wait, maybe it does.

Grampa: Hello Son, I was on my way home from work, and thought I'd drop by.
Homer: Oh, you have a job?
Grampa: They pay me 800 dolllars a week, to tell a cat and mouse what to do.
Homer: I see.
Bart: Dad, can we talk to Grampa alone for a minute?
Homer: Alright, but if he starts to wig out, try to lure him into the cellar.

Stoner 1: Eh man, it's Dave open up!
Stoner 2: Dave's not here, man.
Homer: The guy's so high. He doesn't even know that's Dave!
Bobby: Uh, Homer-
Homer: Homer's not here, man!

Grampa: I want my cheque!
Roger Meyers Jr: You're a writer all right.

Dondelinger: Look Homer, just do the test and you'll do fine.

Highlights include Bart's fantasy (Lie in the snow and count to sixty), John Swartzwelder reference, Bart's race around the world followed by Rock, Paper, Scissors, Grampa's letter to Modern Bride Magazine, the writer's room, Krusty's nicotine patch addiction (I think there's some space on my butt), Homer's fantasy putting Grampa in the Nut House, Grampa's dream (I had a six shooter in my garter, I did), repeated Animation Wing, Homer's deal with his brain, and The Adventures of Ned Flanders.

Man, underrated episode. I really liked this one. I thought it was really funny, and it's hard to go wrong with an Itchy and Scratchy episode. 5/5.
