Is it anything like the original first issue?
(I'm too lazy to look it up.)

No, it's a reprint series, like Classics.

Are the re-prints widely available, and are they likely to be available in the UK?

The UK has it's own reprint series yes called Simpsons Comics Presents, it features "The Best of The Simpsons" which feature two issues from the main series, and a The Best of Bart Simpson, I don't have any issues from that.

There of course the tradebacks too. :P

Generally anything released by Bongo in the US won't be widely available in other countries, aside from the trade paperbacks - you can wait and see what your particular country will release (as Gary has already said, Illustrated is unlikely to be published by Titan because they already do reprints with Best of the Simpsons/Bart Simpson), or the other option is a proper comic book store, which is likely to import a few issues from overseas. Other options include online stores, eBay, etc.
