    R&R: "The Girl Code" (VABF03)

"After a photo Marge posts on social media gets Homer fired, he returns to the best job he ever had, a dishwasher at a Greek restaurant. This same post inspires Lisa to code an app that predicts the real-life consequences of anything you post online, only to create sentient artificial intelligence."

Other thread has not been opened, so let's give this one a try.

    ok sure

not a lot to say about this one. it seemed like a typical modern simpsons episode. some whiffed jokes (SELF-INSPECTION was notably bad) and some ok ones. plot was kind of all over the place. homer gets fired, there's some sick feminism satire, lisa and her one-dimensional one-offs make an app, CONRAD IS REAL somehow So Shocking and there's some lame emotional dilemma... pretty standard stuff. i'll just stick a 2/5 and forget about the episode in like two minutes.

Its been over for 15min where I'm at.. And I've spent 15mins missing the good times it brung me.

I liked all of it,, The Greek economy could really use "The Simpsons Bump" to increase tourism, so thats good.. I really like Burns and Smithers comedy team that began and ended the show.. Showing a pixel Springfield was extra special. a feel good ep that made me feel good!
    I give it 5 outta 5 Zorba's!

The main plot was all right until the guy came alive. I mean, really? Come one. I thought that was really dumb and ruined what could've been fairly interesting. On the other hand, that might have led to a rehash of The D'oh-cial Network. I guess it's good that it was original, but I still think it was stupid. The subplot was just bland, though. And why the hell would Homer like washing dishes? That doesn't fit his character at all, and none of that plot had much substance when he got to the restaurant. It was just boring filler. 2/5

Since I'm really into computer technology, I thought the episode was pretty interesting. The Conrad app coming alive was a little Mike Scully-ish, though. As for Homer being a Greek dishwasher, that didn't really catch my interest.

This episode started a minute late where I was; I guess football delayed things a bit.

Man, it's been a while since I posted here... and my first time actually posting a review here... but enough of this short fanfare, I have a bit to say about this episode.

It wasn't completely bad, but at the same time it didn't feel like the plot could hold itself together very well. The "Homer gets a job" (or in this case "returns to a job never mentioned before") subplot didn't have much going for it. Felt like all it was there for was silly dancing, which was a little funny, and Greek-related jokes. Of course Homer was gonna get back to working at the plant again, so that whole dishwashing thing probably won't be brought up again or mentioned (no more dancing, aw man...).

The main plot felt like something Mike Scully would've done, you have a coding system that develops it's own thoughts and just wants to be set free... the only way it could've been wackier is if it developed romantic feelings for Lisa or tried to take over the world. The coding girls wern't really well developed besides the main one (the only one that actually talked if I'm not mistaken) and it did seem a little rushed, in my opinion the plot would've been a lot more interesting if they put more emphasis on the fact CONRAD was talking rather than parodying current trends in computer tech (the Bob's Burgers cameo was cool though).

Not a bad episode, but still felt a little boring and needed better focus on the main plot.

I'm not sure any of the Greek gags worked. LaZebnik went completely overkill with all of the dancing sequences (we had THREE of them) and the silly moustache and body hair jokes. The gags within the main tech plot more or less were all hits even if the plot came off as contrived. They should have fully committed to it instead of what was ultimately two instances of Conrad non-scripted interaction with Lisa before she sabotaged her entire project.

It's a rare misfire from Selman. I'm largely giving it a 3 because the core idea of an app that acts as an early warning system for social media blunders is undeniably clever.

Not horrible, but not Matt Selman's best. I will say it's a thousand times better than The D'ohcial Network. I thought it was forgettable, but okay. It was good until the app came to life. That being said, it wasn't too far fetched for the Simpsons but it wasn't really that funny. Homer's subplot was pretty funny and it's worth noting that Abe worked in a Greek restaurant in the past as well in "Gone Abie Gone." C+

It was something about technology and some sentinent AI, with dancing and feminism in there somewhere. If that doesn't pique your interest, I don't know what will. 1/10, only for the lunch thing in the beginning.

I dunno, I think the right idea was in there somewhere, but it turned out so contrived that the whole MAJOR DILEMMA with Lisa at the end didn't make much sense. Like...Conrad becoming sentient is about as deus ex machina as Homer inexplicably getting his job back at the end (which I guess is okay because haha we pointed out the absurdity of it). I'm kinda disappointed because not only is it a misfire from Selman (maybe the worst since Opposites A-Frack), it was actually building up pretty nicely in the first two acts. I know it was done three times, but when you're under time constraints, Homer and friends dancing to Greek music isn't necessarily the worst way to show he's enjoying his job. The whole lunch bit at the start was a solid segue into both plots, although unlike other Selmans with subplots we've seen, the two barely converge at the end (frankly the ending to Homer's story barely counts as a resolution).

The tech stuff didn't bother me that much tonight. It's refreshing for the show to be sincere in bringing up technology instead of thinly veiling it under Mapple or whatever the latest letter substitution is. Dunno why there were so many Goths though - Selman sure loves his eccentrics. Some neat animation during the Greek dancing scenes, but otherwise par for the course on that front. Also my dad seemed very excited to point out that Bart had just one or two lines in the ep so there you go.

3/5 on the poll. It might have scraped a 4 from the first two acts if I was feeling more generous.

    Act 1:
-No Intro, just like most of Selman's trademark eps.
-Homer dissolving in the acid just reminded me of when that gave him superpowers in The Simpsons Guy. Same looking skeleton too.
-Annd random live action poster. Ech.
-Nice to see the Shearer characters appearing frequently again, after 2 VABF episodes of obscurity.
-Burns reaction to "Likes" got a chuckle...yeah, I dunno.
-Also, Lisa gets a badass, nerd coding teacher.
    -Meh

    Act 2:
    -"Cream of Calories"
    -Tapped Out style shot cool.
    -Bob's Burgers ref decent.
-So Homer apparently likes washing dishes now...cause he hates modern Internet stuffz...also cause he actually likes to work at something now.
-Dance scene was dumb and went on too long.
-Oh, and Lisa invented artificial life. Cause why not.
    -Still bored.

    Act 3:
    -And now Homer's Italian....pffffft.
    -Also more funny dancing/padding.
-After a few brief scenes, Lisa decides to set Conrad free, he tells a lesson about improving ourselves as humans, instead of focusing on the fact that these nerds made fucking artificial life, how this came to be, and that we should be observing and getting to know how the fuck this happened, but hey, at least Conrad got Homer his job back...yay?
-Annnd more freaking dancing in the end credits. Yawn.

Really forgettable episode, easily the worst Selman showrunned episode I can think of right now. Lisa plot had potential I guess, but as it is, it was a dumb Season 27 episode that I can barely even remember of.

Overall: 5/10, for 2/5 for the poll.

2/5 - what humor there was in the episode was buried underneath the morals. How soon before GamerGate defenders shut down Simpsons World?

Some of the mousepads switched from the left side to the right and vice versa

The start of the episode took place on August 3, according to Marge's post...but then why was school in session?

Marge's Facelook friends include Manjula, Luann van Houten, Helen Lovejoy, Sarah Wiggum, Bernice Hibbert, Cookie Kwan, Smithers, and I think Mrs. Prince.
(One of these ice ages, AT&T is going to get around to adding frame-by-frame advance to U-Verse...)

Can web design be done without coding? SimpsonsArchive.com (formerly SNPP) doesn't need any. (Well, except for the chalkboard app.)

If you want to get technical, you can still exchange drachmas for euros - but only if it's actual cash; a check in drachmas is worthless.

The "What if computers ran the world?" bulletin board was divided into strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; each one had "No More Religion", and the weaknesses included, "Have to wake up Bender."

Courtney Galiano (who finished fourth in season four of So You Think You Can Dance?) received a choreography credit. Note that choreography is an Emmy category, although I doubt they'll seriously consider animated choreography.

    Written by Rob Lazebnik
    Directed by Chris Clements
Special Guest Voice: Stephen Merchant, Kaitlin Olson
Also Starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Chris Edgerly, Russi Taylor
    Choreography by Courtney Galiano
    Overseas Animation: Rough Draft
    TV Rating: TV-PG-LV

I don't know, but I actually kind of liked this episode, except for the dancing bit in the diner.

Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

As part of my review: http://fas1997.deviantart.com/journa...up-1-582307420

The Simpsons: The Girl Code (Written by Rob LaZebnik) (Showrunner Matt Selman) (Directed by Chris Clements)

This episode was better than I thought it would be. Matt Selman showran this episode (even though should have been the showrunner by now already) and the quality kinda shows. Yes, it’s about modern technology which is a problem in later Simpsons episodes, but I think it work here. Honestly, I would be bored out of my mind, but I wasn’t. There’s still bad jokes though, but not bad enough to make it an okay episode. That Conrad guy was a little annoying after awhile and no offense to the guy who guest starred as him. I laughed quite a bit in this one, like the Greek dance (even if they has to reuse it on purpose just so we can get it). So all in all, it was a good episode, but it should have been worse due to the plot. Next episode looks awful, to be honest. (Ugh, Sofia Veraga is guest starring so except her Latin accent to show up in that one) 8/10
American Dad: Father's Daze (4/10) , Fight and Flight (5.5/10), The Enlightment of Ragi-Baba (6.5/10), Portrait of Francine's Genitals (4/10), Bahama Mama (5.5/10), Roger's Baby (2/10), Ninety North, Zero West (8.5/10), Whole Slotta Love (5/10), The Witches of Langley (8/10), A Nice Night for a Drive (6.5/10), Casino Normale (6/10), Bazooke Steve (4.5/10), Camp Campawanda (6/10), Julia Rogerts (5/10), The Life and Times of Stan Smith (5.5/10), The Bitchin Race (4/10), Family Plan (5/10), The Long Bomb (8./10), Kloger (3/10), Garbage Stan, The Talented Mr. Dingleberry, West to Mexico

I just can't really get behind a whole episode about modern tech and apps. I know that this episode did it a bit differently: here the modern tech was central to the plot and wasn't just a random scene of someone using a tablet to make sure we know the show is relevant and "cool". But even then it's not the kind of plot I really want to see. And the modern tech references just got tiresome after a while. Maybe I also find it annoying because I know a lot of people who work in coding and I have to hear about it all the time. So I don't go to the Simpsons to hear the same kind of talk -_- And the plot just got stupid by the end. I wouldn't call it "emotional" though.

    Little things I liked:
-The new teacher making Martin faint.
-Burns saying "Are you playing that Grindr game again?" A gay joke that wasn't cringeworthy! Good job, HD Simpsons.
-Cream of Calories. Even before I saw it, I knew I was going to laugh. How could Marge's setup for that gag fail?
    -Bob Belcher makes a cameo?
-"Siri, tell Amazon to drone me a beer!" That seemed to almost parody the over-saturation of tech references in this episode and I at least found it funny.
-Confederate flag birthday cakes--nice stab at that
-The deux ex machina thing actually was kind of funny. Lampshading it saved it from being totally ridiculous.

I didn't really mind the dance scenes either; the first one wasn't that long and didn't really take away from the episode. The rest were negligible. But the whole plot with Homer came out of nowhere and it didn't really do a lot for me (they sure showed those Greeks, though, which is I guess what they were going for, sort of, I don't know). The Lisa plot was at least something fresh, even if it was wacky. I can tolerate wacky of course, as a fan of the Scully era, but the way they tried to make it a moral thing came off as forced to me and it seemed too absurd to make the point they wanted to at the end. Along with cramming in every possible tech reference they could, of course.

Also were they trying to make fun of feminism at first with the teacher's abrasive attitude toward the boys in the class and Comic Book Guy's comment about offending them? By the end it didn't really seem that way and I wasn't sure what point they were trying to make about female tech employees.

Just a big meh for me. 4.5/10

    2/5 for the poll.

Not very good, nor very bad. Although I dislike how the app gaining sentience turned out to be real after all; I've never been a fan of things like that in The Simpsons, and it's becoming far too common. As for the women, I guess the message here is that, while women can succeed in the technology industry, they can only do so if they look a certain way. The subplot was also very strange, if it can even be called a subplot, since I don't recall any sort of plot. It was more just a bunch of scenes of Homer working at the Greek restaurant and inexplicably becoming ethnically Greek (through osmosis apparently). I'm sure I could go on more about the problems with this episode, but don't feel like that tonight. 2.5/10

I'm a software developer and get paid to write/fix code, so I actually liked this episode. Count me in the minority, but I'm voting 5/5.

Side note - is it me or is it a Matt Sellman thing to have a cold opening with no couch gag?

It's a Selman thing. I like it. More time for the episode to develop.

This is one of those attention to detail gripes I raise issue with when the animators have a brain fart.

What's worse is that Marge was panicking about how her social media caption got Homer fired (with the August 3rd date plainly on display) and Homer proceeds to then open the fridge to grab a beer and there's a calendar on said fridge for a month that's only 30 days long... which clearly isn't August... and wouldn't be July either had they gone three days into the month without flipping the calendar page.

There were two instances of Lisa's pearls being red (one of the most common off-color animation gaffes) in this episode as well. The animation cleanup guy this week was rather careless, IMO.

Well that was a huge cringe fest. Only part that didnt make me wanna punch a hole in the wall was the homer plot.

Not a bad episode, but not that funny and kind of forgettable. I was sort of reminded of "Them, Robot" when Lisa's app came to life. There weren't really any funny moments or gags, it was just this bizarre event unfolding. I was waiting for a punchline or for a reveal that Conrad was a real person acting as the app and that one of her teammates - under the stress - faked the whole thing. Homer's B-story just sort of happened, and while there was no real plot to it, it was the funnier story of the two and I really liked Greek Homer.

    2/5

Would have been a middle-of-the-road 3/5 had the Conrad is ALIVE thing not happened or had some sort of grounding in reality.
