But it can't beat the lie detector-scene from Who Shot Mr. Burns part 2.
And although I liked the look from the alien, I still think the conclusion was a little too wacky and diminuished the overall mood they created throughout the episode.
I guess that was the purpose, but maybe they lost an interesting opportunity to give the episode a mysterious unsettling ending, typical for the X-Files.

One of the many things that makes this episode so phenomenal is that it packed enough comedy into the first two acts, such that when Nemoy closes the book and declares the end, you don't even realise there's still 10 minutes left. It's that good.

    It's the HMS pinafore's 200 post spectacular
So for this I thought I would put all my scepticism behind me and post a review on one of my alltime favorite episodes.
This is one of the best in the humor department with some of my favorite jokes( The Diet sign, All parts with Nemoy,Homer is a dope, the scary stories,"The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down" speed refrence,Lovejoys sermon, "It's bringing love, don't let it get away!", and every other line in the episode.

Also the end of this episode always put's a smile on my face
This then is worth the highest score possible, a 5/5

I love the first act, it perfectly captures that Friday feeling and is actually pretty spooky with the music 'n' all. Also has some great gags. After that it starts to drag and it never really recovers. Also it has a pretty lame dig at Fox (again). Still some good gags though. B+/A- worthy - 4/5. Overrated but enjoyable nonetheless.

Awesome episode, but the end is just a little wacky.
    But still 5/5

I love this episode! The laughs are nearly nonstop, and the plot kept me interested as well. 5/5.

Separate Vocations, Marge vs the Monorail, Lisa the Iconoclast, Secrets of a Successful Marriage, Homer Badman, Summer of 4 Ft. 2, and probably a few more I've forgotten about... though there's loads of episodes I really like that just miss the cut (Moaning Lisa, Lisa's Substitute, Lemon of Troy, Simpson and Delilah, Blood Feud etc).

This episode has always been in my bottom five favourite Simpsons eposodes.I remember being a bit surprised when I first saw it,because for me,it was the first episode where the humour kind of fell a bit flat.As usually happens with any Simpsons episode. has improved a lot on repeated viewings, but it's definately not one of my favourites.

I gave this a rewatch after it won the T tournament. I previously found it as an above average episode, 4/5. But then...holy cow! The episode is great. It's suspenseful, and gut-bustingly funny. My new favorite of season 8.

5/5 by far my favourite Simpsons episode as you can probably tell from my Avatar

Even the subtle things like the creepy music made by the Orchestra on the Bus while Homer was walking home had me in hysterics. ''Don't be afraid..''

definitely in my Top 10. Probably in my Top 5. Maybe even Top 3 (although LETS, The Last Temptation of Homer, Secrets of a Successful Marriage, Cape Feare and Homer's Phobia all give it stiff competition, and that's just off the top of my head)

If you go a while without watching it, and then watch it, it's the best thing ever. But great gagfests like this one are not as rewatchable in my opinion as a Lisa's Subsitute, Homer's Triple Bypass or Bart Sells His Soul.

Hilarious episode. The X-Files music and themes were perfectly used here. Definitely, the better of Jean/Reiss's two season 8 offerings
Leonard Nimoy delivers another classic guest appearance, along with David Duchovny And Gillian Anderson.

    Best Quotes:
Homer: Don't worry, I have a plan. I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around the city, keeping it's SPEED above 50, and if it's SPEED dropped, it would explode. I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down".

Marge: Bad dog! Bad cat! Bad Fawn! huh. Shoo shoo.

Homer: Bold, refreshing, and something I can't quite put my finger on
Red Tick Beer taster: Need's more dog.

    Marge: Have you been drinking?
    Homer: No, well 10 beers.

Wiggum: Well your story is very compeling Mr. Jackass, I mean Simpson, so I'll just type it up on my invisible typewriter...
Homer: You don't have to humiliate me.
Pyromaniac: I just torched a building downtown, and I'm afraid I'll do it again!
Wiggum: Oh yeah, right. I'll just type it up on my invisible typewriter.....Fruitcake!

Mulder: His jiggling is almost hypnotic
Scully: Yes, it's like a lava lamp.

Groundskeeper Willie: Aww it's Mister Burns. Kill It! Kill It!

Coma Survivor: Do Sonny and Cher still have that stupid show?
Kent Brockman: No, she won an Oscar, and he's a congressman.
    Coma Survivor: Good Night. (flatlines)

Highights include The Psycho riff, the looped security tape (with Speed reference), Waterworld video game, the lie detector, Mulder's FBI badge photo and Squeaky Voiced Teen's final line.

Obvious five. Another prime example of why season 8 season is best season.

I agree, it's a prime example of why Season 8 is the 7th best season.

I know this is Miller's favourite episode.
The episode lost some of its appeal for me throughout the years though.
Now it just seems as a forced way to do a crossover between X-Files and The Simpsons.
And as my interest for the X-Files faded, so did my interest for this episode.

And that ending, that's just crazy.
Feels more like something Scully would do in season 11.

The whole episode is brilliant, so many x-files jokes in so little time, the only complaint is leanord nemoy. what the fuck is he doing there? its quite a surrealist episode, something O & W specialised in during season 8. the whole concept was silly, but once you get into the episode there are some great moments, moe hauling the whale across the woods, the lie detector test, the inquisition in moe's, homer and bart camping out waitinf for the alien, and the finale too.
probably one of the last A+ episodes in the shows history.

"The following tale of alien encounter is true, and by that I mean false. It's all lies, but it's entertaining lies..." Great episode, from beginning to end! The whole ep was chocked full of great scenes and lines, so much that if I continue I'll probably end up posting the entire thing. I didn't watch much X-Files before it went off the air, I always seemed to catch the same few eps, but I was still a fan. I'll wadger a guess to your question goodfella; Nimoy was there not only because of his experiences on Star Trek but also because he has narrated several UFO-related documentaries, hence the style of his cameo.

This episode is simply insane, I want to give it a 4/5 b/c it's so crazy... but I can't b/c it's so damn funny and a true classic.

Why, for whatever reason, I was just signing 'Good Morning Starshine' earlier today randomly.
I only know it b/c of this episode... and I picture the scene of Nimoy signing and everyone swaying and dancing as I sing it as well.

    5/5.

This forum will chew me out for rating this episode so low, but hey to each his own.
I personally didn't think it stand out. Moreover, I found the plot rather weak and too crazy for my taste. And although it had great jokes (the Diet sign, "Aww, it's Mr. Burns... let's kill him!", Bad Fawn, and etc.), most of them felt forced (Homer's birthday, college for Maggie, tests, and etc.) and went into lame attempt to make a crossover between The Simpsons and X-Files.

Still, it much better than pun-offerings we get from the staff nowadays.

P.S. Don't kill me! is just my opinion.

  28. #88

Yeah, this episode hasn't aged well for me; I don't enjoy it much overall, and these days usually just watch it for some of my favorite gags (like Moe's Orca-smuggling ring) and then move on to a different episode.
