Rate and Review: "Clown in the Dumps" (SABF20)

A Springfield resident dies. Also, Krusty the Clown retires after being offended by a cable channel's comedy roast of him, and Lisa tries to protect Homer from getting hurt.

A mediocre, forgettable episode... there were a few decent gags, the ones that stand out the most were Wiggum at the sleepover and Krusty's "spoon" necklace and his "I DID EVERYTHING" at the end of the grotesque Itchy and Scratchy cartoon. Overall, just another HD-era episode. An episode driven along by a flimsy plot and little to no jokes. For how much it was hyped and talked about, you'd think it would be a little better than the average but it just sadly wasn't. The next logical step for this show to take is add a laugh track so I know where to laugh because I honestly don't know what they're going for here.

All in all, disjointed and left me scratching my head... season 26 is off to a great start.

Meh, will be forgotten in about a month. No memorable gags, and an awful couch gag (Worst couch gag ever!). The plot really had no structure. Definitely can't see myself re-watching it.
    2/5

I also noticed that they cut out some scenes from the promos. Stuff in the commercials weren't in the show. I sure hope someone was fired for that blunder.

Now, turn off the TV before Brooklyn 99 comes on!

Edit: I did like the joke where Chief Wiggum showed the picture of the body to the kids.

Edit 2: Liked the Odd Couple joke too.

I can't give it a 1 out of 5 because that couch gag was truly something amazing.
Al Jean should quit running the show and just work with independent animators to put award-winning shorts together.
Because that's clearly where his passion lies.

On the bright side, we've got a Selman episode next week. Those of us who survive the Family Guy crossover will have something to look forward to.

I thought the episode wasn't crap but it wasn't good either. Lisa's worries for Homer seemed believable to be honest, in fact the voice acting was pretty spot on and the fact the episode depicted her as an eight year old child with kid issues instead of a grown-up mind with teenage issues.
As for Krusty's storyline, I have to say, that was pretty bland. The death was not even shocking or funny, very disappointing. The episode should've focused on Lisa and Homer, not Krusty giving up show-business for what... like the 5th time or something?
There were a few good chuckles on Lisa's storyline, but the rest of the story, specifically Krusty's story, kind of failed at humor.

2.5/5... I liked Homer and Lisa's story together, especially the jokes, even though it was short. However the rest of the story about Krusty is pretty bland in story and humor. They really need to put more effort to a proper emotional death, it wasn't even funny.

Decent. Several good gags, and the opening short was great, but otherwise pretty average. 5/10.

BTW, is this the first time that Sideshow Mel and Sideshow Bob have interacted with each other?

I see a lot of people like the couch gag, I like how it was made by Don Hertzfeldt, but I really hate guest-written couch gags.

i thought it was bad, but that's typical simpsons fare. it didn't really stand out or anything. nothing particularly horrible or good. i did like the hertzfeldt couch gag though. i typically don't like guest couch gags but it kind of clicked in some way. creative. 2/5

I generally don't like Krusty episodes but I actually enjoyed this one. Then again I had a pretty boring day..
I teared up a little during the funeral NGL even though the talk of a character dying was overblown for who it was. I liked Lisa admitting the need for control. And of course the couch gag was crazy awesome

Mediocre premiere episode, but it wasn't awful or offensive. Just middle of the road. Should have titled it "Moaning Krusty", since it was mainly Krusty moping about until Bart found a reason to cheer him up. Still, I liked all the flashbacks and footage of old Krusty episodes, as well as a new Itchy & Scratchy and seeing the sideshows meet.

Couch gag was great, and I thought the ending was sweet. 3/5

    had some good jokes
would have been better had the death scene been a bit more... anything, less random? yes that's what I mean
the b-plot really dragged and the time wasted could have better served the main story
not every episode needs a b-plot Al

By modern standards I give it a 4/5. I thought the emotion felt true both in the Krusty and Lisa storylines. Other than the overlong couch gag, they didn't waste time getting right into the episode's main focus, which was nice. And I thought there were plenty of good (not many great) jokes throughout the episode. It was pleasant, and felt like a heartfelt Simpsons episode to me.
I think the main misstep was the very brief detour where Krusty thought he had to change his life, which resulted in only that animals scene, then disappeared. My other issues with the episode are, as always, the terrible four act structure, and not as much humor as I'd like.
I think it would have been better if they had Krusty return to comedy and his show after finding out his dad actually liked his humor, because now he'll presumably just wind up back on TV in the next episode with no real explanation. Minor complaint though.

Anyway, overall a pleasant episode with genuine heart. But a bit sloppy on the storytelling and light on the laughs.

Oh yeah, and the Bart chalkboard gag was too cruel, IMO, and the Rodney Dangerfield impression was lacking.
    Signature.

Yes. Ned Flanders as an angel, don't remember the billboard gag or the blackboard gag (something like "Spoiler: Unfortunately my dad doesn't die"), Lisa played a harp

This was pretty bad. The couch gag was way too long as always, and possibly the weirdest thing I've seen on this show (of course, people are going to say it was the best part of the episode). The death was very predictable, and the way it was done was very lazy. The entire thing about Lisa being afraid for her father's health was hard to believe. Why now? The one part of this episode I did like was the quick Wiggum scene. The rest was just bad. I'd think that an episode about a guy's death would have more emotional power, but it had none. The whole breathing thing with Homer in bed was extremely disturbing, and the episode had no resolution at all. This is 1/5 material.

A lot of us called it, as soon as Bart told Krusty to talk to his dad I knew where it was going. This episode wasn't terrible, but it could've been a hell of a lot better. This episode reminds me of Mona Leaves-a in a few ways (ironically both are dedicated to a parent of Dan Castellaneta who passed away) in that the death was anticlimactic, but this episode was better. The premise was good, but the Homer subplot was stupid. They should've left it out and focused more on the A plot. I also liked Maurice LaMarche's acting, it was good. I felt the ending with Krusty and his singing was poorly delivered, and it could've been funnier. Overall, I enjoyed and it was the best season premiere since season 18 IMO. B-

P.S: What was with that couch gag?

It's really depressing to me that a non-zero amount of people associate "weird simpsons" with "lolcats"
