I've been thinking...and season 1 and 15 actually have something very big in common. They're two of the seasons that cause the most debate in quality. It seems everyone feels differently about which episodes are good, how good they are, etc etc. So, rate season 1 and season 15 here and let's see how wide a range of ratings we can get.

Season 1 was supposed to serve as a developmental season. Season 15 was season three of the Al Jean show recovery and restoration project. Season 1 succeeded much more often than Season 15, and is a much stronger season. The first season hit its stride well before the classic Krusty Gets Busted helped to just about cap off a wonderful year overall. Though early on, in a few of the first produced episodes, there were some problems with behavior and characterization (There's no Disgrace Like Home is a guilty pleasure, although such problems are most obvious here), in addition to plotting (Homer's Odyssey), and also just a weak episode overall (Some Enchanted Evening). However, the rest of the season featured several classics. once the season found its footing, character-based stories and humor in episodes like Bart the Genius and Moaning Lisa helped make the early episodes memorable. The show also had success in emotional relationship episodes (Life on the Fast Lane) and wacky but still down-to-Earth episodes (Bart the General). Krusty Gets Busted had some of the best satire of all time, in addition to some well-developed themes and the introduction to the Bart/Lisa partnership. Classic season that achieved what it set out to do.

Season 15 got a lot of hype and really failed to live up to it, with a lackluster second half after a very memorable pre-2004 run. While none of the Scully problems remained at large, humor was hit-and-miss, moreso than in other Jean seasons. Also, we saw the very lackluster return of Artie Ziff. Character-based episodes had almost the opposite result that Season 1 had. Co-Dependent's Day stands out in particular. Just pathetic when compared to Life on the Fast Lane. Still miles ahead of the Scully seasons though.
