I've only got one song stuck in my head right now, but guess which one it is.
Feliz Navidad.
Yes, considering how it's getting closer to Christmas, I sometimes get a few songs stuck in my head, and Feliz Navidad happened to be that one today. I'm aware it's cheesy, but somehow, it's stayed with me through many years. Weird, how it does that.

i am having a helluva lot of trouble with 2 of the songs, but fight test downloaded without a fight, and i must say...although you all probably saw this coming...i don't really like it at all. i wanted to give it an honest shot, and i tried to put my spite and biased opinions aside, but the song almost literally put me to sleep (due partially to the fact that i don't get more than 5 hours sleep a night anymore). i was actually telling myself to like it, but it just seemed kinda bland and "already done" to me...sorry :(
nathaniel
12-18-2002, 10:59 PM
thats nice. if you could tell me what band(s) have "already done" the flaming lip sound, i would be very interested to hear who they are
..noteably in that song. ridiculously original in every way.
name one other song that has awesome crowd-noise.
and one that says now-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow...
so great. you suck.
Anti-Everything
12-18-2002, 11:05 PM
i don't mean literally "already done" but the song just seems to resemble alot of stuff i have heard, to be honest, although it doesn't bear resemblence at all, i first though of the dandy warhol's solid, don't know why, but they reminded me of one another...o and this doesn't bother me too much, but i must have d/l'd a live version or something, and i can't make out most of the lyrics.
I too have been bored with today's music.
But to find something new you really have to look for it. Search through somewhere like pitchfork and you're bound to stumble across something for you.
The problem with most of the music nerdz here is that what they like doesn't appeal to me much at all and really bores me. But sometimes they can suggest something to you that hits the target for you: Gilmore suggested Neko Case to me for some reason and I listened to most of the album Blacklisted and it's great. The vocals are outstanding and the music is very atmosphereic. But what's surprising is that it's nothing like I'd expect myself to like in that Neko Case has a very country western sound to it (don't let that frighten you, even pitchfork gave it a great review!).
Just goes to show that if you take a chance on something you may like it, even though you suspect it may totally not be what you're looking for.
But like I said, if you look hard enough you'll find something that may be perfect. And I think I've found a band that may fit me perfectly... a modern band as in right now, today, still making music kind of modern! The band is called Vitesse and the tracks I've heard from their new album You Win Again, Gravity sound right up my alley.
Here's the MP3 that was listed on Pitchfork:
http://www.parasol.com/mp3/Vitesse-Of All the Things That You've Done Wrong.mp3
And this is my song running through my head for the week.
:bang:

if your going to say the 'lips rip anyone off, it better be someone real old as they have been together for 20 years. anyway:
1) Modest Mouse: Talkin' Shit on a Pretty Sunset
2) Karl Hendricks Trio: Spock is Depressed
3) Husker Du: Standing in the Rain
4) Ben Folds: You Were Not the Same
5) Wu Tang Clan: CREAM

Harmony - Clinic
Apple Bed - Sparklehorse
Needle in the Hay - Elliott Smith
Don't Let it Get You Down - Spoon
Christmas Song - Mogwai
bonus track: There Goes God - Crowded House
I sort of see where Funklord is kind of maybe coming from, in that the chorus to Fight Test (and really the whole melody) is pretty standard fare...not especially challenging or outstanding other than its instant accessibility.
Where the 'Lips really stand out (at least on the three most recent albums) are in their thick-ass production with all the layers of weird sounds and blips and shit that in the end just makes for a delicious, headphones-required listening experience.
I will however dare Funklord to listen to Wilco's Heavy Metal Drummer and dislike it. I double-dog dare you.
"Her Hair Hangs Long" - Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
"Twisterella" - Ride
"Pressed in a Book" - The Shins
"Where Were You?" - Badly Drawn Boy
"Don't Wanna be Left Out" - Powderfinger

i'm not funklord anymore, just btw, i changed my name to something i found much more appropriate...and when i have time to download that song, i "promise" that i will, however, that won't be until friday night, i am going to be at school until 11 at night or later to work on our school's news show.
just remember something about your "dare"...you can try for many many years, and you will have a hard time finding more than a handful of people who like less music than me...
Heh. Duel at sixteen paces and shit.
Sorry about the name...didn't realize the change until I was done and dusted. You'll always be the lord of Funk to me. :/

i know, i can download alot really easily, but i think it has mroe to do with "kazaa" than it does with my 56k, and what really sucks is having 20 songs deleted every week by one of my brothers and having to re-d/l them...and that will always take priority over any recommendations given to me by anyone...

the wilco d/l has begun...
1 hr 30 minutes later after numerous d/l pauses: keep trying Gil, i just won your dare, cuz honestly, these kinds of songs just aren't my "type", this song was definitly better than "fight test", and was good enough not to delete (that says nothing, i still have 'hail to the cheif' on kazaa), however, something i can never put my finger on with these songs comes to me every time i hear them...on umerous occasions i have posted my top groups, and those groups aren't incredibly drastically different from "wilco" or "flaming lips" or "badly drawn boy", yet i can't find myself liking them.
give me your fav. all time song, if i don't already have it for some reason, let me see if we can agree on something...

hi. let's get married
I reccommend that Anti-Everything should listen to web radio stations like http://www.3wk.com/ where a wide variety of new independant stuff is thrown at you and something may grab your attention.
And stop listening to gil. He means well but his recommendations are consistantly off... no offence, gil. I still have no idea how the hell you came to the conclusion that Red House Painters was the band for me.

I don't know, maybe it was your penchant for mopey 80s gloom-rock. My bad.
My fave song of all time is "I Am the Resurrection" by the Stone Roses, Funklord, but at 56k you'll be downloading it for days. Just listen to Comrade and stop listening to me...you and he are the only people I've never been able to peg. Congrats.
"Rudolph" - Jack Johnson
"La Femme D'Argent" - Air
"Stub-a-Dub" - Mr. Bungle
"Options" - Pedro the Lion
"Jenny Come On" - Dressy Bessy

GOD, GIL, HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY THINK I WOULD LIKE MUSIC WHICH HAPPENS TO BE AWESOME, GOD
Red House Painters is alright. Didn't say they were terrible.
But all things considered it misses the mark for me and in some respects seems to be far removed from what I'm usually into.
Given your recent love for Neko Case, try the Cowboy Junkies' 'Trinity Sessions', a classic from the late 80s.
Wait, on second though, don't. I formally give up.

Due to mentions in this and other threads I've read today:
Us - Stephen Malkmus (hooray!!!)
I Promise - Radiohead (oldie, very goodie)
White Man (in Hammersmith Palais) - The Clash (clearly)
I am the Resurrection - Stone Roses (a perennial)
Another Morning Stoner - Trail of Dead (better with every listen)
The Notwist - Pick Up The Phone
Husker [fucking] Du - Eight Miles High
Neko Case - Stinging Velvet
Radiohead - Like Spinning Plates
Mirah - Recommendation
I just downloaded 'I Promise' and I'm not seeing the appeal. It's alright I guess.
The bootleg/unreleased Radiohead song I've loved the most is the 1995 debut of 'True Love Waits' recording.
The Notwist - One With The Freaks (great song imo)
Zwan - Honestly
Bright Eyes - Calendar Hung Itself
Beta Band - The House Song
Pixies - I Bleed

Roger that. I miss the keyboards that used to be on True Love Waits (which were left off of recent years' performances). I also prefer Nude (Big Boots, Man-o-War, whatever) and Lift to I Promise, as far as other tracks of that era go.

EVERY SINGLE X MAS SONG EVER MADE!!!!!
SOMEONE KILL ME!!!!!
lift is for sure the greatest of those mentioned, but i promise is fantastic in its simplicity. i like how it sounds like a war song or something with the band drum type deal.
it's not gay enough for comrade. it's not atmospheric. it needs to create the atmosphere of being fucked in the ass by morrissey, or whatever, apparently.
big boots is great. lift is pretty good. i promise is surely superior. better melody than lift.

Well Gil, my dad just bought my step-mom the new wilco CD (foxtrot sumthin or nutter) for christmas because she likes that kinda stuff, and to quote my father when i asked if he had heard of wilco (i'm sorry to say this): "UGH"...i just thought i should say that. but anyway, she plays it occaisionally (not as much as her new John Mayer CD...AHHHHHHHHH!!!), and i personally think it isn't that bad, but i could only listen to it once before i had to cut back to listening to "nevermind he bollocks"...

Don't bother with that. People here hate the grammys. I agree most nominations are crazy (Nellyville for album of the year?~!) but some are deserving in their catagories (Norah Jones,India.Arie, your Coldplay, etc.) I guess we're evil for liking some mainstream music.

and another you were the one who said your favorites were Grammy nominated so don't go rub in my face that they are worthless. Judging from how you said "best since Space Between" makes me think you're mainly familiar with the singles. But Grey Street is actually one of their finest songs ever made. Seeing them do it live at a concert is something to behold.

Kelly Rowland is hardly ugly. And the song is catchy but not close to beautiful
My ex girlfriend liked Nelly too. So I think you are probably wrong on this one

There is no Radiohead song called Irvine.
The computer voice is from the song Fitter Happier but then that last bit was something someone added on. I'm sure it was a radiohead rip but I couldn't understand what the fuck it said.
Dismemberment Plan - Sentimental Man (found my copy of Change)
The Notwist - One With The Freaks (holy god, this song is awesome)
Better Than Ezra - Teenager

THERE IS NO RADIOHEAD SONG CALLED IRVINE.
That was someone's "remix" of Fitter Happier, with something unintelligible tacked onto the end. I think it was an insult of Thom Yorke.
LP6 seems mostly to be a combination of The Bends and Amnesiac, but I haven't heard a whole lot of it yet. I've heard Thom do solo renditions of Sail to the Moon (amazing!) and There There but I've avoided hearing live versions of the songs because I did that before Amnesiac and I think it kind of ruined the album for me.

No, no... I'm pretty sure that *was* Radiohead.
THRILLHO1
01-16-2003, 02:19 PM
It's sort of the computer voice from Fitter Happier but it's not the original recording and it's not the same voice, and it sounds like the last bit says, "He can be an asshole sometimes but we keep him around for the fuck of it."
"Irvine" is not listed on any Radiohead site I know of and that really does not sound like something Radiohead would do. I really think it was something some techno person who hates Radiohead threw together in like 2 seconds.
AllSussedOut
01-16-2003, 02:21 PM
No... again, I'm pretty sure it's a perfectly legit track. Listen closer, and you can like totally tell.
See, apparently Thom wants LP6 to be a bit... oh, what was the word he used? "Funnier." Yep. A funnier Radiohead album. Can't wait!
THRILLHO1
01-16-2003, 02:22 PM
We'll see. If it really is Radiohead, I'll enjoy the self-deprecating humor. But I've still never heard of Irvine and neither have any of the fan sites, who are usually on top of things.

01-16-2003, 02:25 PM
You just need to look harder, see.
I think Thom has also been quoted in the NME as having a goldfish named Irvine. But that might just be me, getting my wires all crossed.
A funnier Radiohead album. Yep.

Just have to wait and see. I do know the songs that are being tied to LP6 but I'm trying not to listen to them. But the two songs I have heard haven't really been funny.
Plus, they've said repeatedly that they want to use no computers on the new album, so Irvine seems out of place that way.
thom recorded punch up at a wedding and irvine together, but only released punch up.
cannot wait for this more humorous album. =]
