Never heard of Mountain Goats...Gabe's Oasis and the Maintenence Shop are also hot spots for good bands, too, right?

I never get a chance to find out about any of these cool shows. I only know, like, two people who even listen to the same music I do. So besides an occasional newspaper listing, I have no idea what's going on (plus I'm not a music buff, anyway). I usually only get to see really shitty local punk bands in downtown Des Moines.

yeah the scottish camera obscura are sorta like a more restrained, less poppy version of B&S on Sinister except the vocals are more early-leonard cohen-styled than nick drake or morrissey. also they don't go for expansive bryter layter style strings as often as B&S (or isobel campbell). their first album is good, but if you download pretty much any two tracks on the Underachievers Must Try Harder second album you should get a good idea of what they're like. coincidentally i am going to see them on monday in a church hall or something (after failed attempt to get into their earlier show at a 50-capacity bar last week).

i wanted to give xiu xiu a shot to see what the fuss is about. so I tracked down their cover of 'ceremony' (http://formerairline.com/music/xiuxiuceremony.mp3)as i figured it was a good place to start (downloading it took quite a while on poisoned).

at first listen i wondered what the fuck they did to the song, on second listen I found it strangely compelling, by now I've come to like this bizarre cover. are all xiu xiu songs like this?

the ian curtis impression at the end is spot-on too.

awesomeness, thanks ASO..

questions:

1. is this a NHC sponsered site (meaning: is there were you guys post your music to share between each other.. ASO, Gil, Nate, Roarke, etc..?)

2. Which ones would be this genius IDM you speak of? Manitoba and Board of Canada clones welcome.

I forget which MNKer passed it my way (it was for !!!'s "Giuliani," by the way)... but whomever it was, thanks again. I don't know if it is an MNK member's site, or some random-ass link.

To find the IDM and more, click on "downloads" at the top of the page. In addition to offering the same MP3 links as are found on the main page, there are descriptions of what each song is/sounds like/is reminiscent of.

I bought it, at a small New England chain of record stores called Newbury Comics. You should certainly keep seeking the album out, as it's excellent; check out the MP3 sample here (http://www.killrockstars.com/bands/owlandpussycat/audio/Blinds.mp3) to see if it really would be something that interests you.

Cansecos Against Racism - Faster Than You Go Down On Gareth Jones' Mom

Heh... wha?

It appears that the band (or someone else) actually slipped that into the CDDB registry. So if you rip the CD, you get a whole set of wacky alterna-titles.

and that's exactly how I appreciate them. The Darkness and Jet are just incredibly cheesy rehashed rock with absolutely no substantial credibility...but it's still just stupid fun. Your comparison to Spinal Tap is a good one.

"kill the alligator and run" is stupid fun too. doesn't stop it being irritating, boring, and lifeless. i don't get this constant inverted-snob musical argument that because something is "fun", it is somehow beyond criticism. i also don't get the defense of the darkness that they are somehow "putting the fun back into mainstream rock" or something. because every white stripes or strokes single is a whiny acoustic ballad or something? pfft
