embarassingly enough, I had never heard the original (possibly) version of "This Christmas" before... legitimately thought it was a D-Plan original, as found on this here page last week or so... so when the original played on Bernie Mac this week I did a spittake (my mouth was full of latkes at the time)...
how dumb am I?
Same thing happened for me, only I freaked the fuck out when my sister was watching some american idol thing in the background and I heard the big black guy singing it.

Ok so this great idea just occured to me. It's smart enough to post, but too stupid to warrant it's own thread.
You get the polyphonic spree and godspeed you black emperor together. Put them in a big arena, with tons of hazards (spikes shooting out of walls, tigers, etc.) and have a massive apocalyptic grudgematch between good and evil.
Anyone dig this idea?

In response to both of your posts, it was indeed a Schoolhouse Rock cover, and a good one at that. A few other 90s "alt" bands contributed, if I remember... but it was hit and miss at best.
Nothing beats De La's Schoolhouse Rock-inspired "3 is the Magic Number," though.
the blind melon cover is a close competitor.
just watched the grammar rock vhs again this morning. I am SO raising my kids on that shit.
has anyone ever even HEARD of dig or kula shaker since their one-hit wonderment and the schoolhouse rock comp?
kula shaker split up soon after that big hit (gavinda?). the lead singer is now in a band called the jeevas. i heard one of their songs on the radio a few months ago. it was good. but have heard nothing about them since then.

also, could someone explain more about this schoolhouse rock thingy? Series of animated shorts, mostly made in the seventies, that aired (might continue to air) on ABC Saturday mornings. Each one featured a history, science, math or grammar lesson set to music. And they're practically the best songs ever written.
Lyrics to a lot of the songs here (http://www.postdiluvian.org/~gilly/Schoolhouse_Rock/HTML/schoolhouse.html).
By the way, I used to have the Blind Melon cover on my playlist thanks to one of you guys... is there any chance it could be uploaded again so I could have it on the new comp? If it's too much trouble don't bother.

on a side note (well, more of a tangent, instead of starting a new thread), I've liked Jeff Buckley for a while now, but i've just recently realized how amazing his voice is (was). His is like the first voice i've ever heard that's literally blown me away, seriously. It's practically angelic. Just thought i'd get that off my chest. I'm done now, continue listing songs....

emo is a gay word. don't use it.
they have a harder sound than like dashboard confessional or the promise ring. the obvious comparison is fugazi, seeing as how they are on discord, and ian mckaye produces them.
thinking of a dream is indeed a money song.

* IMO the funniest lyric ever: "there was no use in pretending, no magic left to hear, all the music gave me was a craving for lite beer...." what a great song about the commercialism of pop/rock music.

Holiday (Live version)-Weezer
El Scorcho-Weezer
The Good Life-Weezer
Iron Man-Black Sabbath
Today-Smashing Pumpkins
Maybe I've been listening to too much Weezer lately...
the shins - pink bullets (finally got around to buying the album)
trail of dead - days of being wild
decemberists - here i dreamt i was an architect
the microphones - i cant believe you actually died
irving - crumbling mountain tops.
I will admit that I had intentionally avoided dling anything from chutes before buying it so as to have some surprise element...now my question is why had I not seen praise for Pink Bullets??

The guys at work had this playing on the stereo the other day. Pretty good album, I'd say.
