A couple of questions:
1. So Outkast is acutually good?
2. I only have two Belle & Sebastian albums, Tiger and Sinister, and the other albums didn't get good reviews. So the question is: What other good album from B&S are worth my money?

Bombs Away - Lagwagon
Dazed And Confused - Led Zeppelin
Violins - Lagwagon
Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
Razor Burn - Lagwagon

It's amazing how similar Lagwagon and Led Zeppelin's guitar work is. I know Zep's stuff is about 30, 25 years older, but still. Lagwagon was probably heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page inparticular.

the boyracer and gbv songs top out at about 2 minutes each, so you can't go wrong with all of them (though about half the gbv songs there are later gbv and thus rather "meh").

as for the d-plan, all you need from that list is:

The Face of the Earth
Pay for the Piano
Time Bomb
The Other Side
Ellen and Ben
A Life of Possibilities
Memory Machine
What Do You Want Me to Say?
Spider in the Snow
I Love a Magician
You Are Invited

That's When the Party Started
The Ice of Boston

I've been exploring a lot of Elephant 6 bands (aside from Neutral Milk Hotel) and a few that came out of that. Nerdz, what would you say is the best album to get first if I want to get into Apples in Stereo and Elf Power? I'm thinking "A Dream in Sound" for the latter, lemme know.

brockman1988

MORE MELLOW THIS WEEK
1. "Why Can't I?" Liz Phair
2. "Be Mine," David Gray (It takes a brave man to use the phrases "Jumpin' Jesus" and "Holy cow" in a song.)
3. "The Golden Age," Flaming Lips (possibly the best cover ever)
4. "Kite," U2
5. "The Scientist," Coldplay

P.S.-According to a University of Cincinatti study, these are the top 5 songs stuck in the average person's head:
>The Kit-Kat "Gimme a Break" jingle
>The Chili's "Baby Back Ribs" jingle
>Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out?"
>Queen's "We Will Rock You"
>The Mission: Impossible theme

To the Elephant 6 guy:

I'm not exactly one of the local music "nerdz" round these parts, but it really sounds like you're going in the wrong direction

After Neutral Milk Hotel, the correct follow ups are The Olivia Tremor Control, and then Of Montreal, then Circulatory System.

But seriously, go for Cubist Castle or Black Foliage if you can find 'em.

But if you really need some Elf Power, yeah, Dream in Sound is pretty kinda OK.

Yeah I found a few Of Montreal songs pretty entertaining, "Fun Loving Nun" especially, but I rarely listen to it anymore. For Apples in Stereo, I'm downloading "The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone", I hear it's one of their best.

gil
09-06-2003, 04:43 PM
that's the AiS one I was going to suggest, as it's the best of theirs that I have heard (fun trick noisemaker is also yummy). you've already picked the right elf power, but When the Red King Comes is also very good.

Coquelicot and Gay Parade are all you need to hear from Of Montreal (except maybe the singles and songles one)...the rest are borderline annoying.

Cubist Castle is good, but not amazing. OTC have yet to blow my socks off. Same goes for Circulatory System, though they have a couple of standout tracks.

See also: The Sunshine Fix (album: Age of the Sun) and obviously Beulah.

Not much stuck in my head this week.

But I have been listening to the Sopranos theme on Musicmatch and Windows media at the same time with the timing ever so slightly off.

It provides an efect that sounds like it's going to shake my computer to peices.

It's pretty cool you people should try it.

What did the Flaming Lips do this year besides release an EP with a painfully bad Kylie cover?

Radiohead, Exploding Hearts, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Broken Social Scene, and probably The Rapture (I have foreseen it) will probably be more accurate among those who matter.

I have their first one. It really isn't bad, just severely pales in comparison to you forgot it in people. Just alot slower, without many guitars. Much more ambient, with little vocals.

Anyway, their 3rd album, at this rate, will be totally ass kicking.

You talking about the images that they have above every section of the site like news/reviews, etc.? or are you talking about the banners they put up like they did for the broken social scene interview?

On that note the top 50 used CDs list was clearly missing any album or compilation by The Smiths. There's an inexhaustable supply of them at any used record store I've been to.

On a Lighter note: I like the top 100 albums of the 1990s...
TRu-ness in many verses... happy Entroducing got in top 10, surprised Nevermind beat Utero, surprised that New Adventures in HiFi was left off though Automatic was still in... Bee Thousand yep, Pinkerton too low..Sabadoh was correct, wrong Sonic Youth album IMO,no Superdrag, and worst of all, where the fuck is Soft Bulletin? I mean really...
but still an entertaining list.

Found this on some random site, it was the best I could do:

Neutral Milk Hotel Releases Best Album of 1993-2003 (So Says Magnet Magazine)

In what will no doubt light many flames under many indie-rock loving butts, All Things Indie bi-monthly Magnet Magazine has listed what its editors consider the 60 best albums from the last decade (1993-2003). The magazine, its cover graced by a very early 90s Radiohead (Thom Yorke blonde and loving it), also includes brief summaries of the era's heavy-weights (e.g. Lou Barlow, Thurston and Kim, Elliott Smith, Jeff Tweedy) and a quite humorous interview with the primarily stoic Yorke.

We at Tiny Mix Tapes have negotiated deeply into the night (monitors humming impatiently as we traded barbs and gorged ourselves on hot cocoa and Trail Mix) and decided to re-print for you constant reader, the Top 20 albums. Neutral Milk Hotel master-mind Jeff Mangum's incredibly haunting, shimmering, delightful epic In The Aeroplane Over The Sea tops the list. Magnet staff writer William Bowers bellows, "To compare Neutral Milk Hotel's second full-length to something as low and gauche as a rock record does it a damn grievous disservice."

Riddles abound.

The number one album of the past decade? Arguably, it is a mighty fine record, a record brimming with power, talent, and passion. My editor thinks so. Mangum must sure think so (he's disappeared from view, only releasing a live album and miscellaneous field recordings and doesn't seem intent on coming back), but look at the rest of this list. I believe we should hold a town meeting, start a debate team, concoct mad, brooding letters to the editor. Calexico, R.E.M., Dirty Three? White Pepper? The Strokes?? THE VERVE!!!?????

Oh dear Magnet Magazine, you've created quite the controversy.

The List:

20. R.E.M., Adventures In Hi-Fi
19. The Strokes, Is This It
18. Dirty Three, Horse Stories
17. Weezer, Pinkerton
16. Mercury Rev, Deserter’s Songs
15. Ween, White Pepper
14. Grandaddy, The Sophtware Slump
13. Calexico, The Black Light
12. Elliott Smith, XO
11. Wilco, Summerteeth
10. Tortoise, Millions Now Living Will Never Die
09. Pavement, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
08. The Verve, Urban Hymns
07. Yo La Tengo, I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

Low's Just Like Christmas and Belle & Sebastian's O Come Emmanuel are sorely lacking from those completely inane lists.

As for me:

Wire - Outdoor Miner (as sung by Ted Leo)
Copyright - Transfiguration (http://formerairline.com/music/Transfiguration.mp3) some interesting if not pretentious lyrics in this one.
